Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a mostly static playlist, start with 1920×1080 (1080p) at 30 fps if your source video, encoder and sustained upload connection can handle it reliably. This is a practical starting point, not a YouTube- or OBS-mandated preset. If testing shows dropped frames, encoder overload or inadequate upload headroom, try 1280×720 (720p) at 30 fps and test again.
How to choose a resolution for a 24/7 playlist
Choose the highest output setting that remains stable over an extended run, rather than maximizing resolution in isolation. The right choice depends on the source’s detail, sustained upload capacity, encoder and system load, and the connections your viewers use. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably sustain; OBS cautions that 60-fps streaming can be substantially more demanding than 30 fps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and the OBS streaming guide.
1080p30: the sensible first test
For a mostly static playlist, 1080p30 is a reasonable starting point when the video is available at that resolution and the computer and connection can sustain it. It preserves full-HD detail without the additional frame workload of 60 fps. This is an inference from the official guidance, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet plan will manage a continuous stream.
720p30: reduce load when stability is the problem
If 1080p30 causes dropped frames, encoder overload or unreliable upload, test 720p30. A lower resolution can reduce the amount of video data sent and the work required to encode it. It will not fix every problem: an unstable connection, unsuitable encoder settings or a system interruption may still stop a long-running stream.

When 60 fps is worth testing
Use 60 fps only when the source benefits from smoother motion and your encoder and connection can sustain it. A static image, lyric screen or slow-moving playlist usually has little to gain from doubling the frame rate. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can tax a system much more than 30 fps, so validate it rather than assuming the setting is free.
Set the OBS output resolution and frame rate
In OBS, the Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange sources. Output (Scaled) Resolution sets the resolution sent to the stream. They can match, but they do not have to: for example, you can compose at a source or monitor resolution and scale the outgoing stream to 1920×1080. OBS describes Output (Scaled) Resolution as the stream output resolution in its streaming guide. Labels or layout may vary by installed OBS version.

- Set Common FPS Values to 30 for the initial playlist test. Consider 60 only if the content needs it and your system passes a sustained test.
- Select Apply, then OK. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health before relying on the setup.
Set bitrate and stream stability settings
For H.264, YouTube’s current published recommended ingest bitrates include the following. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that your upload connection can sustain them continuously. The figures are from YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026.
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
YouTube’s recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Check the settings for the codec your encoder actually uses instead of applying the H.264 figures to another codec.

Encoder settings to verify
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: use RTMPS for encrypted transport when available.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingest options; confirm that your chosen encoder supports the codec.
- SDR color: YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.
Exact controls and available encoder options depend on the encoder selected in your OBS installation. Use YouTube’s encoder settings reference alongside the controls actually exposed by that encoder.
Leave upload headroom and test the full chain
A bitrate recommendation is not a substitute for a reliable connection. Test the actual upload path and select a setting that stays healthy over time; do not judge a 24/7 configuration from a brief successful start. OBS recommends testing before going live, and an always-on channel should be validated over an extended run. No setting can establish in advance that an unknown computer, encoder or internet connection will remain stable indefinitely.

Plan for YouTube archives and DVR
A stream running for 24 hours exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving replays matters, plan regular stream endings under 12 hours and keep a local recording backup. This is an archive and DVR limitation, not a resolution setting. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Troubleshoot an unstable OBS playlist stream
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or poor stream health | Whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate reliably. | Test again at a lower output, such as 720p30, and reassess stream health. |
| Encoder overload | Whether the encoder and computer can sustain the chosen resolution and frame rate. | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then run another extended test. |
| 1080p60 is unstable but 1080p30 is not yet tested | Whether the playlist actually benefits from 60 fps. | Try 1080p30; OBS cautions that 60 fps can be substantially more taxing than 30 fps. |
| Stream starts, but a long session is not archived | Whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. | For archives, end streams before the threshold and record locally as a backup. |
| Correct resolution but viewers still report playback trouble | Whether the stream remains healthy and whether the output is stable over time. | Check YouTube stream health and test a lower resolution; resolution alone cannot diagnose every viewer-side or network issue. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube playlist and you do not want a computer at home to keep streaming, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream from a camera.
