For a 24/7 sleep-sounds stream, don’t add every OBS filter by default. Start with the sound source and fix only an audible problem: use noise suppression for mild unwanted noise, compression for occasional loud peaks, and a limiter last to cap peaks. Be cautious with gates and expanders, which can reduce the quiet passages that make ambient audio work. OBS does not publish a sleep-stream preset or settings validated for this use, so listen to the full chain before going live.
Choose filters for the sound you actually have
OBS lets you add filters to an individual source or audio device. Identify where the sleep audio enters your scene, then apply any processing there rather than building a voice-focused chain automatically. A steady ambient recording may need little or no processing.

What each OBS filter does—and how to approach it
Noise suppression: only when there is noise to remove
The OBS Noise Suppression guide describes the filter as useful for mild background or white noise, including environmental noise such as computer-fan noise. It says the feature is generally not effective with large amounts of background noise. OBS characterizes RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex; this is not a quantified performance comparison or a sleep-audio test. If you enable suppression, compare the wanted ambient sound as well as the noise, and avoid aggressive settings that alter the content.
Gate: usually a poor assumption for continuous ambience
The OBS Noise Gate guide frames the gate around cutting background noise when a speaker is not speaking, using separate open and close thresholds. Sleep audio may contain intentional quiet sections, so the gate can suppress wanted sound. Don’t transfer voice-oriented thresholds without auditioning the quietest parts of your recording.

Expander: gentler behavior is possible, but quiet signal still falls
OBS describes an expander as reducing signal below a threshold and presents it as a possible alternative to a gate. Its adjustable ratio can make opening and closing smoother than a fixed gate. The OBS Expander guide lists a default ratio of 2.00:1 and threshold of -40.00 dB; it gives 5–10 ms attack and 50–120 ms release as recommended starting ranges. These are OBS settings guidance, not sleep-stream recommendations. If you try an expander, listen for quiet content disappearing or transitions becoming noticeable.
Compressor: address loud excursions, not every steady track
A compressor reduces louder signal above its threshold. OBS says it is typically placed near the beginning of the filter chain, and its explanation focuses on a source—typically a microphone—that sometimes becomes much louder. The OBS Compressor guide lists defaults of 10:1 ratio, -18.00 dB threshold, 6 ms attack, and 60 ms release. Defaults are not evidence that those settings suit an ambient recording; if the audio is already consistently leveled, compression may not be needed.

Limiter: last in the chain
OBS says a limiter prevents a signal from exceeding its threshold, which can help avoid clipping and distortion. Its official guide says, “When using a Limiter it should be the last filter in your chain.” The documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release. Treat those as software defaults, not a proven target for sleep content, and verify the resulting output.
Build a conservative filter chain
There is no OBS-published one-click preset or universal chain for sleep sounds. Use placement guidance only where OBS provides it: compressor near the start, expander after compression or other effects, and limiter last. Add noise suppression only when mild noise is actually present; OBS’s documentation does not set a universal position for every filter in this use.

- Find the source: In OBS, identify the scene source or audio device carrying the sleep audio. Open that source’s filters and make changes there.
- Listen before processing: Play the recording and note whether it has unwanted mild noise, genuinely loud excursions, or quiet intervals that must remain audible.
- Add only the relevant filter: Try noise suppression for mild noise, compression for loud excursions, or an expander only if low-level unwanted signal is a problem. Skip filters that do not address an audible issue.
- Put the limiter last if you use one: Check peaks and listen for clipping or other unwanted changes. A limiter threshold caps peaks; it does not by itself establish the stream’s overall loudness.
- Audition the quietest and loudest sections: Check that quiet ambience remains present and that processing has not changed wanted sounds.
- Test the configured scene and stream before launch: OBS recommends testing stream operation and checking that the scene is correct. Its overview does not prescribe a 24-hour endurance test or promise uninterrupted operation.
Validate the stream—and know what filters cannot do
Before going live, verify the correct scene and audio source, then listen to representative quiet and loud passages through the configured output. OBS’s overview recommends testing, but the cited material does not establish a 24-hour test procedure or guarantee uptime. Audio filters shape the source signal; they do not, on the evidence available here, prevent stream interruptions. Content rights and platform rules are separate from audio processing, and OBS’s filter documentation does not establish licensing or current YouTube rules.
