The best alternative depends on what you mean by “replace.” For mainstream 4K streaming, Roku Ultra is a practical choice with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Ethernet and USB playback. Apple TV 4K is a strong fit for Apple households and supports 4K HDR video and Dolby Atmos. Neither is established as a like-for-like replacement for the SHIELD TV Pro’s mix of Android gaming, Google Play and GeForce NOW 4K HDR.
First decide what you need to replace
The SHIELD TV Pro combines two jobs that competing devices may not: streaming video and gaming. If your priority is watching films and shows in 4K, compare picture and audio formats, app ecosystem, network connection and local-media support. If you want to play games, check the specific service and input devices you intend to use; a streamer that handles 4K video is not automatically a gaming replacement.
NVIDIA lists Android TV powered by Android 11, GeForce NOW 4K HDR, and advanced Android gaming through Google Play for SHIELD TV Pro. NVIDIA says GeForce NOW on SHIELD requires a compatible game controller or keyboard and mouse. Its specifications also include 16 GB of storage expandable by USB, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0b and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports. NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro specifications describe the storage as “Expandable using USB flash or hard drives.”
Best alternatives for 4K streaming
Roku Ultra: a practical streaming-first option
Roku lists its Ultra model 4850R with 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet and USB local playback. Ethernet can be useful if you prefer a wired connection, while USB playback matters if you keep video files on removable storage. Confirm that your television and any audio receiver support the formats you want to use; a streamer’s format list alone does not guarantee every part of a home theater can display or play them.

Roku positions the device for home-theater and heavy-streaming use. The company calls it its fastest streaming device, but that is vendor positioning rather than an independent comparative test. See Roku’s Ultra product page for its listed features.
Apple TV 4K: a strong fit for Apple households
Apple lists SDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG video support up to 2160p at 60 frames per second, as well as Dolby Atmos audio support. That makes it a capable 4K HDR streaming option, particularly if you prefer Apple’s ecosystem. Apple states that an HDMI cable is sold separately, so account for that when setting up the device.
