Lawnchair is the best starting point for most former Nova users. It keeps a familiar Pixel-style grid while adding icon packs, widgets, Material You theming and app organization. Choose Niagara for one-handed minimalism, Smart Launcher 6 for automatic categorization, Hyperion for a light feel on older phones, Octopi for foldables, or Kvaesitso for search-first, open-source workflows. No alternative reproduces every Nova feature, so the right choice depends on which parts of Nova you actually use.
Quick comparison
These launchers solve different problems rather than competing on a single score. The table shows the practical distinction before the detailed sections.
| Launcher | Customization and interaction | Performance or workflow angle | Privacy and maintenance | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lawnchair | Pixel-like grid, Material You, icon packs, widgets and app organization | Familiar, fast and smooth in reviewer reports; active open-source community project | Open source improves transparency, but it is not proof of privacy; check current disclosures | Closest conventional replacement for former Nova users |
| Niagara | Vertical app list, integrated notifications and one-handed navigation; no traditional grid or multilayer dock | Speed, focus and reduced visual clutter | Requires a current app-level privacy review; no comparative privacy ranking is established | Minimalists and people using large phones one-handed |
| Smart Launcher 6 | Automatic app categories, wallpaper-adaptive color, horizontal default layout and flexible widgets | Low setup effort; a reviewer found it less speedy than Nova or Action Launcher | Deeper customization requires the paid tier; check its current data-safety disclosure | Users who want organization without manual sorting |
| Action Launcher | Quicktheme, Shutters, adaptive icons, notification dots and transition effects | Continued updates were reported; Pro upgrade unlocks additional features | Verify current update cadence and privacy disclosures | Users who want distinctive interactions beyond Nova |
| Hyperion | Familiar Pixel/Nova-style layout with substantial customization | Reported as light, smooth and quick, especially on older or mid-range hardware | Free tier is usable; some tools require premium; verify current disclosures | Performance-sensitive users |
| Octopi | Separate inner and outer layouts, widget stacking, search and foldable-specific controls | Uses both screens on a foldable more fully | Check availability, requested permissions and update status | Foldable-phone owners |
| Kvaesitso | Search-first vertical interface, tag-based organization and one widget pane | Fast search workflow, but sideloading and the new model require adjustment | Open source; distributed through F-Droid or GitHub rather than Google Play | Search-first and open-source users |
Why Nova users are looking elsewhere
On September 14, 2025, Android Authority reported that Nova Launcher development had drawn to a close after Branch Metrics ownership, making future compatibility updates unlikely. That is an editorial maintenance-risk report, not a guarantee that the app has disappeared. Check Nova’s current Google Play listing, last update date and compatibility with your Android version before uninstalling it.

A launcher can remain usable for years without updates, but Android changes can eventually affect gesture navigation, widgets, notification access, battery behavior or support for new screen sizes. Treat maintenance as a selection criterion, especially if your phone receives major Android upgrades.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How to choose a replacement
Start with the behavior you use every day rather than a feature checklist. A conventional home-screen grid points to Lawnchair, Hyperion or Action Launcher. A vertical list and fewer decisions point to Niagara. Automatic sorting points to Smart Launcher 6. A foldable’s two displays point to Octopi. If you reach for a search box before browsing icons, Kvaesitso may be the better fit.
- Need Nova’s familiar mental model: Try Lawnchair first, then Hyperion if device responsiveness is your priority.
- Want less visual noise: Niagara removes the grid and makes the app list the primary navigation surface.
- Do not want to curate folders: Smart Launcher 6 creates categories automatically.
- Want extra gestures and contextual panels: Action Launcher offers Shutters, Quicktheme and transition options.
- Use a book-style or flip foldable: Octopi’s separate inner and outer layouts are more relevant than a conventional launcher.
- Prefer open-source software and keyboard-driven access: Kvaesitso uses search and tags instead of a conventional icon grid.
Lawnchair: the closest mainstream Nova substitute
Lawnchair follows the Pixel Launcher model while exposing more controls than the stock experience. Its official site describes it as “a supercharged version of the Pixel Launcher you know and love.” That makes the transition straightforward for someone accustomed to a conventional Android home screen.
What you can customize
- Adjust a familiar icon grid, app drawer and dock arrangement.
- Apply icon packs and widgets, with Material You color integration.
- Organize applications without abandoning the standard Android interaction pattern.
It is not a feature-for-feature Nova clone. Advanced gesture combinations, multiple dock layers and some search controls are less complete than Nova’s historical toolset. If those are essential, test your most-used gesture and dock setup before committing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Who should choose it
Choose Lawnchair when you want the smallest learning curve and a conventional grid. It is also the sensible first download for people who want community-developed software without moving away from Pixel-style navigation. Open-source development is a transparency signal, not a privacy verdict; review the current permissions and disclosures yourself.
Niagara: minimalism and one-handed reach
Niagara replaces the icon grid with a vertically arranged list. An alphabet rail and one-handed gestures let you reach applications without stretching across a large display. Notifications can appear alongside the app list, reducing the need to pull down the notification shade.
The trade-off
The same design that makes Niagara quick also removes the layout depth Nova users may expect. There is no traditional grid with multiple dock layers, so highly arranged home screens, large folders and dense widget dashboards do not translate directly. You are choosing a different navigation model, not merely a new theme.
Best use case
Niagara suits people who open apps by name, want fewer visual distractions or use a phone one-handed. It is especially comfortable on tall phones where reaching the top row of a conventional grid is awkward. Review its current permissions and privacy policy before installation; the available evidence does not establish it as more private than the other options.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Smart Launcher 6: automatic organization
Smart Launcher 6 automatically places applications into categories, reducing the setup work required after installation. Its default layout is horizontal, and its colors can adapt to the wallpaper. Flexible widgets let you build a more conventional home screen when you need one.
Why it is different
Nova users who maintain folders manually may appreciate the time saved by automatic categories. The approach is less predictable if you have a very specific folder taxonomy or want every icon in a precisely chosen location. Review the generated categories and adjust them before relying on the drawer as your primary app index.
Cost and speed considerations
Deeper customization is placed behind Smart Launcher 6’s paid tier. A reviewer also found it less speedy than Nova or Action Launcher, but that is an observation rather than a standardized benchmark. Your result will depend on chipset, Android version, widgets, animation settings and the phone manufacturer’s software.
Action Launcher: distinctive controls beyond the grid
Action Launcher keeps a conventional home-screen foundation while adding features that change how panels and icons behave. Quicktheme derives colors from the wallpaper, Shutters expose widget or app content from an icon, adaptive icons change shape consistently, and notification dots show pending activity. Transition effects provide more visual choices than a stock launcher.
Continued updates have been reported, but check the current release history for your Android version. A Pro upgrade is required for some capabilities. Action Launcher is a good match when you want Nova-like fundamentals plus contextual panels, rather than the quietest or lightest interface.
Hyperion: a performance-oriented conventional layout
Hyperion uses a Pixel/Nova-style grid and offers meaningful customization without requiring a radically different workflow. Reviews describe it as light, smooth and quick, particularly on older or mid-range phones. Those descriptions are qualitative impressions, not laboratory measurements or a guarantee for every device.
What to expect
- The free tier is usable for a basic replacement.
- Some customization tools require the premium version.
- Its familiar layout makes migration easier than switching to a vertical or search-first launcher.
Choose Hyperion when your current phone feels constrained and you want to minimize launcher overhead. Disable heavy live widgets and unnecessary animations during testing so you can tell whether the launcher itself is responsible for any change in responsiveness.

- Hands-Free Made Easy: Easily turn your PopSocket into a phone stand to prop up your phone anywhere, perfect for watching videos, video calls, or following recipes. A must-have phone holder that keeps your device secure and ready for anything.
- Compatibility: Works with all phones, tablets, and Kindles. Sticks best to smooth, hard plastic cases and may not adhere to silicone or textured cases. Easily swap your PopTop to change up your style.

- Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
Octopi: built for foldable displays
Octopi treats the inner and outer screens as separate surfaces. You can maintain different layouts, stack widgets and use foldable-specific controls instead of forcing one phone-sized grid onto two aspect ratios.
Why a regular launcher may fall short on a foldable
A cover display and an unfolded display often need different icon density, widget placement and reach zones. Reusing one layout can leave large empty areas outside and cramped controls inside. Octopi’s separate layouts are designed around that hardware change.
Check whether Octopi is available for your model, which permissions it requests and when it was last updated. Foldable support can be device-specific, so test opening, closing, rotating and resuming apps before making it your permanent default.
Kvaesitso: search-first and open source
Kvaesitso makes search the primary way to launch apps. Its vertical interface uses tags for organization and provides a single widget pane rather than a multi-page icon grid. This can be efficient if you remember application names or categories better than locations.
Installation and learning curve
Kvaesitso is distributed through F-Droid or GitHub rather than Google Play. Sideloading means you must obtain the package from the project’s current release channel, review the signing and update process, and grant only the permissions you understand. The search-centric workflow also takes time to learn if you are used to tapping fixed icons.

| If you care most about… | Best candidates | What you give up |
|---|---|---|

| Automatic app sorting | Smart Launcher 6 | Manual control over every category and location |
| Contextual panels and effects | Action Launcher | Some features require Pro |

Performance: what “fast” really means
No standardized benchmark is provided for these launchers. Reviewer descriptions such as “fast,” “smooth,” “lightweight” or “less speedy” are useful starting points, but they are not measured frame times or battery tests. Performance changes with the phone’s chipset, RAM, Android release, manufacturer skin, number of widgets, animation scale and background services.

A practical test on your own phone
- Install the candidate without importing every widget immediately.
- Set it as the default home app and reboot once.
- Open the app drawer, search for five apps, launch two widgets and switch between home and a recent app repeatedly.
- Test gesture navigation, notification shade access, screen rotation and locked-to-unlocked transitions.
- Add your normal widgets and icon pack, then repeat the same actions.
- Keep the launcher for at least a full day, including charging and Bluetooth or car use, before deciding.
If delays appear only after adding widgets or animated effects, remove those elements first. If home gestures fail or the launcher repeatedly reloads, restore the previous launcher from the default-app setting and check for an update.
Privacy: how to evaluate each launcher
The available comparisons do not establish a definitive privacy winner. Being open source can make code and issue discussions easier to inspect, but it does not by itself describe network activity, analytics or data retention. Conversely, a launcher distributed through Google Play is not automatically more or less private.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open the launcher’s current Google Play data-safety section when a Play listing exists.
- Read the linked privacy policy and note what is collected, shared, retained or used for advertising.
- Review Android’s permission prompt and the installed app’s permission page; deny anything not needed for the launcher to function.
- Look for optional analytics, crash reporting, account sign-in and cloud backup features.
- For F-Droid or GitHub downloads, verify the project release page, signing information and update method before sideloading.
- Recheck these documents after major updates because disclosures and permissions can change.
For a privacy-sensitive setup, avoid granting notification access, accessibility access or contacts access unless you understand the exact feature that needs it. Android may expose additional controls under Settings > Apps > Special app access; labels vary by manufacturer.
Migration from Nova without losing your routine
There is no universal importer that recreates every Nova gesture, folder rule, widget placement and icon-pack setting inside another launcher. Plan a short transition instead of deleting Nova immediately.
- Capture screenshots of each Nova home-screen page, folder and dock. Write down gesture actions and hidden-app rules.
- Export or retain your Nova backup if you may need to return. Do not assume another launcher can read that file.
- Install one candidate and set it as the default home app. On many phones this is under Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app; Samsung and other manufacturers may use a different label.
- Recreate the dock, primary widgets and most-used folders first. Leave decorative pages until the interaction feels right.
- Check notification dots, widget refresh, icon-pack compatibility, gesture navigation and search behavior.
- Keep Nova installed for several days. If the replacement fails, return to the same Home app setting and restore your previous layout.
