Start with three changes: remove camera, microphone and location access that apps do not need; turn off low-value notifications and lock-screen previews; and keep Battery Saver ready for trips or low-charge situations. Then install stable system updates, reduce unnecessary background activity, and review Glyph alerts. These settings improve control and can reduce avoidable work, but Nothing has not published a controlled battery-life percentage or benchmark for Nothing OS 5.0, so treat battery and performance gains as usage-dependent rather than guaranteed numbers.

Nothing describes OS 5.0 as a major Android 17 release. Its highlighted privacy changes are clearer camera, microphone and location indicators plus updated permission controls. The stable rollout began with Phone (3) and is staggered by region and device, so the menus or availability you see can depend on your handset and software build.

Choose a settings profile before you change anything

The right configuration depends on whether you value maximum privacy, uninterrupted alerts, or the longest practical runtime. Use this table as a starting point, then apply the detailed steps below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Profile Privacy strength Expected battery impact Convenience cost Best for
Balanced daily Keep permissions required by core features; remove obvious exceptions; limit promotional notifications. Low to moderate reduction in unnecessary background activity. Most calls, messages and sync continue normally. Everyday use when you need reliable alerts.
Privacy-first Remove optional camera, microphone and location access; minimize lock-screen previews; allow alerts only from important apps. Potentially lower background work, depending on which apps lose access or notifications. Some features may ask for permission again, and private previews are hidden. Public places, shared spaces and users who want tight sensor control.
Travel/low-battery Use the privacy-first choices that do not disrupt navigation or emergency communication. Battery Saver adds system-level power restrictions. Background sync, notifications or app responsiveness can be delayed. Long journeys, poor reception, or a phone below 20% charge.

Nothing’s published material supports the controls and qualitative optimisations described here. It does not establish a universal percentage improvement for any profile.

1. Audit camera, microphone and location permissions

Sensor permissions are the highest-value privacy review because they decide which apps can access information about your surroundings and movements. OS 5.0’s updated controls and clearer indicators are intended to make that access easier to notice and manage.

Review every installed app

  1. Open Settings and search for Permissions or Permission manager. On builds that organise controls by app, open Settings > Apps, choose an app, then open Permissions.
  2. Check the Camera, Microphone and Location categories one at a time. Start with apps you rarely use, games, shopping apps and utilities that have no obvious sensor-related feature.
  3. For each app, select the least access that still supports its purpose. Depending on the app and OS build, choices can include denying access, allowing it only while the app is in use, or asking each time. If a choice is not shown, use the options available on your device rather than assuming every Android permission mode exists everywhere.
  4. Open the app after changing a permission. If a feature fails, restore only the permission needed for that feature and leave unrelated sensors denied.

Use indicators as an ongoing check

Do not treat the first audit as permanent. When an app uses the camera or microphone, Nothing OS 5.0’s privacy indicators should provide a visible signal; location access also has an indicator or status treatment on supported builds. If an indicator appears when you are not using a feature that needs the sensor, open the notification or privacy control to identify the app, then revisit its permission.

Permission decisions that usually make sense

  • Camera: deny it for apps that only display text, browse products or play offline games. Re-enable it for a video call, document scanner or camera-based tool when needed.
  • Microphone: deny it for apps with no calling, recording or voice-search function. Keyboard voice input and accessibility tools may need a separate decision.
  • Location: keep it for navigation or location-based safety features, but remove it from apps that do not use location in a way you value. Location can be especially important while travelling, so test maps and emergency features before a trip.

Removing a permission is not a promise of longer battery life. Any battery effect depends on whether the app would otherwise use a sensor, how often it runs, and what other background work it performs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Reduce notification exposure without missing important messages

Notifications reveal information on the screen, wake the display, create sound or vibration, and encourage repeated app checks. Reducing low-value alerts therefore helps privacy and may reduce avoidable activity, while still allowing essential communication.

Turn off notifications app by app

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > App settings.
  2. Select an app from the list.
  3. Turn off notifications entirely for promotional or low-value apps, or disable only the categories you do not need if the app provides separate channels.
  4. Repeat the review for social, shopping, news, game and delivery apps. Keep calling, messaging, calendar and security alerts that you genuinely rely on.

Review the list after several days rather than trying to predict every alert in advance. An app that sends frequent notices but rarely provides useful information is a strong candidate for a complete block.

Protect lock-screen content

Notification permission and lock-screen visibility are separate decisions. In the lock-screen notification settings, choose the most private preview option available on your build, such as hiding sensitive content while still showing that an alert exists. This prevents message text, one-time codes or delivery details from being readable when the phone is unattended. If you need immediate detail from a particular app, allow previews only for that app instead of exposing every notification.

Understand the trade-off

Blocking an app’s notifications can also hide time-sensitive information. Before disabling alerts, check whether the app has an in-app inbox, email fallback or a critical account warning that you must receive. Notification reduction is most useful when it is selective rather than a blanket block that causes you to miss security or appointment reminders.

3. Keep Battery Saver ready, and use it deliberately

Battery Saver is the appropriate emergency or travel control when you need to stretch the remaining charge. It is not a universal replacement for fixing an app that misbehaves, because its restrictions can delay synchronization, background processing and notifications.

Add Battery Saver to Quick Settings

  1. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open the expanded Quick Settings panel.
  2. Tap the pencil icon to edit tiles.
  3. Find Battery Saver. If it is in the lower or unused area, press and hold it and move it into the visible tile area.
  4. Save the arrangement, then swipe down twice and tap Battery Saver whenever you need the low-power mode.

Nothing says the phone prompts users below 20% battery. You can accept that prompt for an urgent situation or turn Battery Saver on earlier when you know charging will be unavailable.

When to enable it

  • Turn it on before a long flight, hike, festival or commute where charging is uncertain.
  • Use it during poor-signal conditions, when the phone may spend more time searching for a network.
  • Enable it when the remaining charge is low and you need calls, maps or authentication to remain available.

When to leave it off

Leave Battery Saver off during ordinary desk use if delayed background work would be inconvenient. A delayed message, cloud upload, navigation update or authentication notification can be more costly than the charge saved. If one app is responsible for unusual drain, investigate that app instead of keeping the entire phone in a restricted mode.

4. Stay on the stable channel and install updates

Nothing says system updates can add features and performance optimisations. For a privacy and reliability setup, use the latest stable build offered for your device rather than beta software unless you deliberately accept instability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for a stable update

  1. Open Settings > System > System update.
  2. Check the displayed build and update status.
  3. Install an available stable update when the phone has sufficient charge and a reliable connection.
  4. Restart if the installer requests it, then revisit the privacy and notification settings if the update changes their placement or defaults.

OS 5.0’s rollout is staggered by region and device. The first stable rollout began with Phone (3), but availability on another Nothing handset can arrive later. An update not appearing today does not by itself mean the phone is unsupported; check the device’s own update screen and the release information for your region.

Why beta software is a poor default for this goal

Nothing warns that beta software may affect stability, battery life and performance. That makes a beta a poor choice when your priorities are predictable privacy controls, reliable alerts and consistent runtime. Use it only if you understand the risks, can tolerate app or system faults, and have a recovery plan.

Give a major update time to settle

After a major OS installation, indexing, app updates and other one-time work can make the first charge cycle look unusual. Do not judge battery behavior from a single day. Use the phone normally for several ordinary days, note the same broad activities, and compare patterns rather than expecting a published percentage. No controlled battery-life or performance benchmark for OS 5.0 is established in the official material described here.

5. Preserve performance by reducing unnecessary background load

Nothing describes OS 5.0 as improving app launches, scrolling, touch response, multitasking and memory management. Those are qualitative product claims, not a controlled benchmark. Your settings can help the system keep that experience consistent by reducing work it does not need to perform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove apps you no longer use

  1. Open the app drawer and identify apps that have not been used for a long time.
  2. Uninstall apps you do not need. For a built-in app that cannot be removed, disable it only if the system allows that option and you understand what feature may depend on it.
  3. After removing an app, check whether its notification categories or account connection still appear elsewhere and clean up any remaining access.

Fewer installed apps mean fewer opportunities for updates, notifications and background services. This is maintenance advice, not a measured OS 5.0 speed increase.

Control noisy background activity through notifications and permissions

Start with the notification and sensor audits above. An app that does not need to alert you, use a sensor or run a location feature should not receive those opportunities. Prefer the system’s permission and notification controls over repeatedly force-stopping apps.

Avoid aggressive manual task-killing

Force-closing every app after use can make the next launch slower and cause the app to reload data. Close an app when it is frozen, misbehaving or consuming unusual resources; otherwise let Nothing OS manage memory. The OS 5.0 claim about improved memory management is best supported by avoiding a habit that creates unnecessary reloads.

Diagnose a genuine slowdown

  • Restart the phone if an app or system process has become stuck.
  • Install pending stable app and system updates.
  • Remove a recently installed app if the slowdown began immediately afterward.
  • Check whether low storage, continuous navigation, a weak signal or a hot environment explains the behavior before changing unrelated privacy controls.

These checks identify common causes without pretending that a particular setting guarantees a benchmark result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Review Glyph controls in one place

Nothing says the Glyph App centralizes Glyph settings. Use that central location to keep only the light, sound or visual alerts that convey information you actually need.

Trim repeated interruptions

  1. Open the Glyph App or the Glyph settings entry on your phone.
  2. Review alert patterns, contacts, app associations and any repeated reminders.
  3. Disable patterns that duplicate an ordinary notification or that activate when the phone is already in view.
  4. Keep distinctive alerts for priority contacts or situations where you may not hear a normal tone.

Reducing Glyph activity can make the phone less distracting and may reduce some repeated visual or audio work. Nothing has not published a quantified battery saving for changing Glyph settings, so choose based on usefulness rather than a promised percentage.

7. A complete setup sequence after updating to OS 5.0

Use this order so that privacy decisions are made before you evaluate battery or performance.

  1. Confirm the build: open Settings > System > System update and establish whether you are on a stable release.
  2. Run the sensor audit: review camera, microphone and location permissions, then test the apps whose core functions depend on them.
  3. Watch the indicators: use the phone normally and investigate unexpected camera, microphone or location activity.
  4. Clean notifications: go to Settings > Notifications > App settings, block low-value alerts and hide sensitive lock-screen previews.
  5. Prepare Quick Settings: make Battery Saver visible by editing the panel with the pencil icon.
  6. Reduce background load: uninstall unused apps, remove unnecessary permissions and avoid routine force-closing.
  7. Trim Glyph alerts: keep only patterns that add useful information.
  8. Observe several normal days: compare battery behavior under similar use instead of relying on the first post-update charge.

8. Troubleshooting common trade-offs

An app stopped working after the privacy audit

Open that app’s permission page and identify the sensor it actually needs. Restore only that permission, preferably with the narrowest access mode offered. If the feature still fails, check the app’s own settings and install a stable app update before granting broad access to multiple sensors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Notifications arrive late with Battery Saver enabled

This is an expected trade-off of a low-power mode that restricts background work. Turn Battery Saver off when immediate synchronization matters, or leave it enabled only for apps whose delayed alerts are acceptable. Do not assume a late notification indicates a defective phone until you have tested with Battery Saver disabled.

The phone feels slower after disabling many notifications

Notification blocking should not normally require force-closing apps, but an app may refresh differently when its background activity is restricted. Re-enable the category that carries essential updates, test again, and keep promotional categories disabled. Check for a stable app update if the change coincides with a new release.

Battery looks worse immediately after OS 5.0

Allow several ordinary days for one-time post-update work to finish. Keep the stable build current, compare similar usage days, and look for unusual signal conditions, navigation, heat or a newly installed app. There is no official OS 5.0 percentage that can be used as a pass/fail threshold.

The update is not available

Nothing’s stable rollout is staggered by region and device, and the initial general release began with Phone (3). Recheck Settings > System > System update later and verify that the phone is eligible for the release in your market. Avoid installing an unofficial package merely to obtain the new settings.

Recommended final configuration

For most owners, the best everyday setup is the balanced profile: deny sensor access that has no clear purpose, keep camera, microphone and location available only where a feature genuinely needs them, disable promotional notifications, hide sensitive lock-screen previews, and leave Battery Saver ready rather than permanently enabled. Stay on the latest stable build, remove unused apps, avoid indiscriminate task-killing and turn off redundant Glyph alerts.

Choose the privacy-first profile when sensor exposure and lock-screen privacy matter more than convenience. Add Battery Saver for travel or low charge, accepting that background sync and notifications may be delayed. These changes are practical controls supported by Nothing’s OS 5.0 descriptions; they are not a promise of a specific battery-life or speed percentage.
