There is no permanently best non-technology sector. The most useful choices are Health Care, Consumer Staples, Utilities, Industrials, Financials, Energy, Materials and Real Estate, combined according to the risks already concentrated in your portfolio. Defensive sectors can soften exposure to an economic slowdown, while cyclical, commodity-sensitive and real-asset sectors can add different growth, inflation and income drivers. Correlations change, and a sector fund can still be highly concentrated, so evaluate the sector, the fund holdings and your whole portfolio together.

Why add non-technology sectors?

A portfolio dominated by technology companies may depend on a narrow set of return drivers: corporate software and hardware spending, advertising budgets, semiconductor demand, long-duration growth valuations, and a small group of very large companies. Adding other sectors does not guarantee a gain when technology falls, but it can reduce dependence on those same drivers.

MSCI found that most U.S. sectors had low performance correlations over the two decades ending in May 2024. Combining assets that do not move in lockstep can reduce portfolio risk, although the relationship is not permanent. S&P Dow Jones Indices also shows that sector correlations and return dispersion change over time; its January 2025 dashboard used trailing data through January 31, 2025. A sector that diversified a technology-heavy portfolio in one market regime may move with it in another.

Diversification works best when the added holdings have different economic exposures, not merely different labels. A health-care fund with large technology-like biotechnology or medical-device holdings may overlap with your existing growth risk. An infrastructure fund may own many industrial and technology companies. Look through the actual holdings before deciding that an investment is “non-tech.”

The eight main non-technology sectors

The following sectors cover the practical shortlist for a U.S. investor using the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS). Each has a distinct role, but none is a guaranteed hedge or a complete portfolio by itself.

Sector Potential portfolio role Main return drivers Important risks
Health Care Defensive demand with an innovation component Medical services, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, devices and health-care utilization Regulation, reimbursement changes, clinical or drug-development failures and high valuations
Consumer Staples Defensive consumption and possible income Food, beverages, household products and other necessities; pricing power and volume Input-cost inflation, changing consumer preferences, weak volume growth and valuation
Utilities Defensive, income-oriented and infrastructure exposure Regulated electricity, gas and water demand; allowed returns; power investment Interest rates, leverage, regulation, fuel costs and capital requirements
Industrials Cyclical growth and capital-spending exposure Manufacturing, aerospace, defense, transportation, construction and business investment Recessions, order cancellations, project delays, labor costs and commodity inputs
Financials Credit, lending and economic-growth exposure Net interest income, loan growth, capital markets, insurance premiums and investment results Credit losses, yield-curve changes, regulation, liquidity stress and economic weakness
Energy Commodity and inflation sensitivity Oil and natural-gas prices, production volumes, refining, services and cash returns Commodity-price swings, production costs, policy, environmental liabilities and transition risk
Materials Commodity, manufacturing and inflation sensitivity Metals, chemicals, packaging, paper and building-material demand Global industrial cycles, construction demand, energy costs and commodity prices
Real Estate Property income and real-asset exposure Occupancy, rents, property values, development and real-estate investment trusts (REITs) Interest rates, refinancing, vacancies, property-specific shocks and local-market weakness

Defensive sectors for a technology slowdown or recession

State Street identifies Consumer Staples, Utilities and Health Care as non-cyclical or defensive sectors that have generally performed relatively well during slowdowns and recessions. “Defensive” describes the stability of demand, not protection from losses. A recession can still reduce medical procedures, household spending or electricity demand, and rising rates can hurt utilities and property companies.

Health Care

People need treatment, medicines and insurance in every phase of the business cycle, giving health care a more persistent demand base than many discretionary industries. The sector also includes innovative businesses, so it is not simply a low-growth substitute for technology. Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology can produce very different results from hospitals, insurers or device makers.

Assess policy and reimbursement exposure, patent expirations, clinical pipelines and valuation. A diversified health-care fund can spread company-specific risk, but it still concentrates you in one regulatory and spending system. International health-care funds add companies and currencies from other countries while introducing country and exchange-rate risk.

Consumer Staples

Staples companies sell necessities such as food, beverages, cleaning supplies and personal-care products. Consumers may trade down to cheaper brands, but they generally continue buying essentials. The sector can therefore provide a counterweight to businesses whose sales depend on capital spending or discretionary purchases.

Staples are not immune to inflation. Higher agricultural, packaging, transportation or wage costs can compress margins when companies cannot raise prices quickly. Examine brand strength, retailer bargaining power, volume trends, debt and dividend sustainability rather than assuming every staple company is equally defensive.

Utilities

Regulated electric, gas and water companies often have comparatively predictable demand and may distribute substantial dividends. Their business models can make them useful when you want income and lower direct exposure to corporate technology spending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Utilities are also among the most interest-rate-sensitive sectors. They typically carry significant debt to build and maintain infrastructure, so higher financing costs can reduce earnings or make their dividends less attractive relative to bonds. Regulation, fuel costs, weather and large capital projects can create additional volatility.

Cyclical sectors that diversify growth exposure

If your portfolio already has a large defensive allocation, cyclical sectors can add different sources of return. They tend to benefit from improving economic activity but can fall more sharply when growth expectations deteriorate.

Industrials

Industrials span manufacturers, transportation companies, aerospace and defense contractors, engineering firms and infrastructure suppliers. Revenue is linked to factory output, construction, freight, government projects and corporate capital expenditure. This can complement a portfolio driven mainly by consumer technology and digital services.

Industrial earnings often turn before economic data do because investors price future orders. Check backlog quality, customer concentration, fixed costs, labor availability and exposure to government or commercial projects. Defense demand may be steadier than commercial aerospace, while transportation is highly sensitive to shipment volumes and fuel prices; the sector label does not eliminate these differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Financials

Banks, insurers, brokers and other financial companies participate directly in lending, payments, capital markets and risk transfer. They can benefit from loan growth and a healthy economy, making them a potential counterweight to technology-specific valuations.

Financials are not a simple interest-rate bet. Banks depend on the spread between asset yields and funding costs, credit quality, liquidity and capital rules. Insurers face underwriting results, catastrophe losses and investment-portfolio risk. A steepening or flattening yield curve can affect subsectors differently, and stress can spread quickly through confidence and funding markets.

Commodity and real-asset sectors

Energy, Materials and Real Estate can add inflation sensitivity and exposure to physical assets. Their returns may be especially different from technology during periods when commodity prices, construction or rents drive the market. They also bring some of the widest swings in earnings and valuations.

Energy

Energy companies are influenced by oil and natural-gas prices, production decisions, refining margins, service costs and shareholder distributions. When energy prices rise, the sector can provide a strong inflation-sensitive component; when prices fall, profits and cash flow can contract rapidly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider whether a fund is concentrated in exploration and production, integrated majors, refiners, pipelines or services. Those groups respond differently to commodity prices and interest rates. Policy changes, environmental liabilities and the long-term transition away from hydrocarbons are structural risks that a high current dividend does not remove.

Materials

Materials companies supply metals, chemicals, packaging, paper and construction inputs. Demand often follows global manufacturing, housing and infrastructure, while pricing can reflect scarce commodities and energy costs. The sector may benefit when inflation lifts replacement costs and selling prices, but a global industrial slowdown can overwhelm that effect.

Review geographic revenue, mine or plant costs, reserve quality, contract structures and the balance between commodity producers and specialty manufacturers. A materials fund can be more diversified than a single mining company but remains exposed to the same broad cycle.

Real Estate

Real estate, commonly accessed through REITs, can provide property income and an asset base different from operating companies. Office, apartment, industrial, retail, health-care and data-center properties have distinct occupancy and rent dynamics, so the property mix matters more than the sector name alone.

Rates affect real estate through financing costs, capitalization rates and the relative appeal of dividends. Refinancing schedules, debt maturities and variable-rate borrowing are critical. Occupancy, lease duration, tenant quality and local supply determine whether rental income is durable. Real estate can diversify a technology-heavy portfolio, but it is not a cash substitute and can be volatile when credit conditions tighten.

How to choose the right mix

Start with the risk you are trying to reduce, then select sectors whose main drivers differ from that risk. Use the following sequence rather than choosing the sector with the latest winning return.

  1. Map your current exposure. Review every fund and account for sector weights, largest holdings, geographic revenue and factor exposures such as growth, value, leverage and dividend yield. A broad-market fund may already contain substantial financials, health care, industrials and consumer staples.
  2. Define the gap. Decide whether you need less sensitivity to technology valuations, more income, inflation exposure, lower economic-cycle dependence or broader geography. One sector rarely solves several gaps at once.
  3. Compare economic sensitivity. Defensive sectors depend more on recurring consumption and regulated demand; industrials and financials depend more on growth and capital spending; energy and materials depend more on commodities; real estate depends heavily on property and credit markets.
  4. Test rate and inflation exposure. Utilities and real estate can behave like long-duration income assets when rates rise. Energy and materials may respond better to commodity inflation, but their operating earnings are more volatile. Financials can react to both rates and credit conditions.
  5. Check correlation without treating it as permanent. Historical correlation can show how sectors behaved over a selected period, but it cannot promise that they will diverge in the next downturn. Stress-test how the portfolio would respond to recession, inflation, falling rates and a commodity shock.
  6. Inspect concentration and overlap. Read the fund’s full holdings, top-ten weight, subsector distribution and company business descriptions. A “non-tech” fund may still own companies with technology-like valuations or infrastructure exposure that overlaps your existing holdings.
  7. Evaluate income and valuation. Compare dividend yield, payout coverage, debt, earnings multiples and the assumptions embedded in the price. A high yield can reflect falling earnings or a deteriorating balance sheet, not a bargain.
  8. Account for geography and currency. International sector funds can broaden country and industry exposure, but currency movements, local regulation, political risk and different accounting standards add uncertainty.
  9. Set a review and rebalancing rule. Rebalance on a schedule or when allocations move beyond a predetermined band. Avoid changing the plan solely because one sector led the previous year.

Sector ETFs and mutual funds: practical implementation

Sector ETFs and mutual funds are the clearest way to obtain diversified exposure without selecting individual companies. Fidelity describes sector funds as targeted exposure that can support growth, diversification and risk management. State Street offers ETFs for all 11 GICS sectors; examples of non-technology funds include Consumer Staples (XLP), Energy (XLE), Financials (XLF), Health Care (XLV), Industrials (XLI), Materials (XLB), Real Estate (XLRE) and Utilities (XLU).

These tickers are examples for research, not personalized recommendations. Fund details change, so verify the current prospectus and holdings before investing.

Check before buying Why it matters
Expense ratio and trading spread Fees reduce long-term returns; a wide spread can increase the cost of entering or exiting.
Holdings and top-ten weight Reveals whether the fund is genuinely diversified or dominated by a few companies.
Subsector composition Two funds with the same sector label may have very different exposures, such as insurers versus banks or drug makers versus hospitals.
Index methodology Weighting by market capitalization, equal weighting and factor screens create different concentration and valuation risks.
Distribution history and tax treatment Dividends and capital-gain distributions affect cash flow and taxable-account results; past distributions are not guaranteed.
Liquidity, assets and trading history Greater liquidity can make execution easier, especially during volatile markets.
Account and regional eligibility Fund availability, withholding taxes and reporting differ by country and account type.

Sector investing still carries concentration risk because holdings share similar business activities. State Street explicitly cautions that sector funds can reduce single-stock or individual-industry risk without eliminating concentration risk. A broad, diversified core portfolio should normally remain the foundation; sector funds are tools for deliberate tilts, not automatic replacements for that core.

What the available performance evidence does—and does not—show

Recent numbers illustrate why chasing the latest leader is unreliable:

  • MSCI reported that most U.S. sectors had low performance correlations over the 20 years ending in May 2024. This supports combining sectors, but it does not establish a fixed future correlation.
  • Vanguard calculations using MSCI indexes and Bloomberg data found that a hypothetical $100 invested in U.S. stocks grew to $334 by the end of 2024, compared with $160 for a comparable non-U.S.-stock investment. The figures corresponded to annualized returns of 13% and 5%, respectively, over the measured period. They describe that historical comparison, not a forecast or a reason to avoid international diversification.
  • The MSCI USA Defensive Sectors Index returned 10.21% in calendar year 2025 and 7.58% in calendar year 2024, according to MSCI’s 2026 performance page. Those returns cover the index and those calendar years only; they do not mean defensive sectors will outperform in every downturn.
  • S&P Dow Jones Indices documented changing sector correlations and dispersion in 2024, with its January 2025 dashboard reporting trailing-12-month statistics through January 31, 2025. A diversification decision should therefore use a range of market environments, not one recent chart.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing the latest top performer

Leadership rotates as growth, inflation, rates and valuations change. Buying a sector after an exceptional run can increase the risk of paying for optimistic expectations. Use current valuation and business conditions alongside long-term portfolio needs.

Assuming defensive means loss-proof

Health Care, Consumer Staples and Utilities can be more resilient in some slowdowns, but they can still fall because of rates, regulation, input costs, earnings disappointments or broad market stress.

Ignoring hidden technology exposure

Read each holding’s business description and revenue sources. A fund can be classified outside technology while owning companies whose prices are driven by cloud spending, data centers, automation or other technology themes.

Overlooking debt and refinancing

Utilities, real estate and financials can be particularly sensitive to funding conditions. Examine maturity schedules, variable-rate debt, interest coverage and capital requirements rather than relying on a dividend yield.

Using too many narrow funds

Several small sector positions can create a complicated portfolio without reducing risk if the funds own the same companies or respond to the same factor. Consolidate overlapping exposure and monitor the combined top holdings.

Forgetting taxes and rebalancing costs

Sales in taxable accounts can realize gains, while mutual-fund distributions and foreign holdings can have additional tax consequences. Consider account location, turnover and transaction costs before changing allocations.

A decision framework by investor objective

If your main concern is… Sectors to investigate first Risks to verify
Reducing dependence on technology growth valuations Consumer Staples, Health Care, Utilities, Financials and Industrials Hidden growth overlap, valuation, economic-cycle sensitivity and concentration
Maintaining demand during a slowdown Health Care, Consumer Staples and selected Utilities Regulation, input costs, rates and the fact that defensive sectors can still decline
Adding inflation or commodity sensitivity Energy and Materials; some Real Estate exposure Commodity volatility, leverage, transition policy, occupancy and refinancing
Adding income Utilities, Consumer Staples, Financials and Real Estate Payout coverage, debt, rate sensitivity and whether yield reflects falling prices
Adding economic-growth exposure outside technology Industrials, Financials, Materials and Energy Recession risk, credit losses, capital spending and commodity cycles
Broadening country exposure International or global sector funds Currency, country, tax, liquidity and regulatory differences

Bottom line: there is no single best sector

The best non-technology allocation is the combination that offsets the risks you already own without creating a new concentration. Health Care and Consumer Staples can provide more defensive demand; Utilities can add regulated income but bring rate and leverage risk; Industrials and Financials add growth and economic-cycle exposure; Energy and Materials add commodity and inflation sensitivity; and Real Estate adds property income with substantial rate and refinancing risk.

Use sector funds only after checking overlap, fees, holdings, taxes and liquidity. Keep historical correlations and recent returns in context, set an allocation rule, and rebalance deliberately. That process is more durable than naming one sector as the winner.
