Decide whether you need a comfort grip
Handheld grips add bulk but can make the console easier to hold during long sessions, especially if the standard Joy-Con shape feels narrow. Pick a grip that leaves the charging port, vents, speakers and game-card access usable. Joy-Con charging station
A charging station becomes worthwhile when a household owns multiple Joy-Con sets or regularly leaves controllers away from the console. It gives each controller a visible charging slot and reduces the chance that a spare pair is empty when guests arrive. If you own only the pair that came with the console and normally attach it after playing, the station is a convenience rather than an essential purchase.
Check the station’s connector arrangement and capacity before buying. A station does not replace a Pro Controller; it solves charging organization, not control preference.
USB LAN adapter

The adapter is optional: it adds no benefit to a handheld-only setup and requires a docked connection and an available wired network cable. Pack the right accessories for travel
Slim case for light luggage
Choose a slim case when the trip requires only the console, Joy-Con and a few game cards. It keeps the footprint small and is faster to pack than a case with multiple compartments. The trade-off is that the dock, AC adapter, HDMI cable and Pro Controller may need a separate bag, increasing the chance of leaving a critical item behind.

All-in-one case for a complete setup
An all-in-one case is better when you expect to play on a hotel or family television and need the dock, AC adapter, HDMI cable and controller. Check the internal dimensions against your exact console and dock, then inspect the padding around the display and dock. A case that technically fits but forces the cable compartment closed can put pressure on connectors or make packing difficult. Separate rigid compartments are preferable to a single open cavity in which the dock and console can strike each other.
Do not judge an all-in-one case by its accessory count alone. More storage usually means a larger and heavier bag. If you are flying with only a personal item, measure the packed case against your bag before purchase. If you are carrying the dock in checked luggage, use a case with enough structural protection and keep the console and game cards with you when practical.
Carry the correct charging equipment
Pack the AC adapter and USB-C equipment intended for your console model. A spare charging setup is useful for travel, but the plug, power rating and cable must be appropriate for the destination and console. Do not assume that any USB-C cable provides the same charging performance or that a phone charger is a drop-in replacement for the console’s required equipment. Keep the main adapter and a backup cable in separate compartments so one misplaced pouch does not strand the entire setup.

Use a travel packing checklist
- Confirm the case fits the exact Switch revision and any grip or protective shell you leave attached.
- Place the console in the padded compartment with the screen protector installed and fully adhered.
- Pack Joy-Con, the Pro Controller if required, and game cards in their dedicated sections.
- Add the dock, AC adapter and HDMI cable only when the trip requires television play.
- Place charging cables in a separate organizer and check that no connector is bent or trapped under the console.
- Before leaving, verify that the console, controllers and any headset are charged and that you have the correct storage card for the console generation.
Get storage compatibility right
Storage is the accessory category where a generation mistake can make an otherwise good purchase unusable. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance states that Nintendo Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards. An ordinary microSD card that works in an original Switch should not be presented as a universal Switch 2 option.

Install and verify a card safely
- Power the console down fully before opening the card slot or removing an existing card.
- Check the card label for the required format: compatible microSD for an original Switch-family console, or microSD Express for Switch 2.
- Insert the card in the orientation shown by the console until it clicks into place; never force it.
- Start the console and use its storage or data-management settings to confirm that the card is recognized.
- If the card is not detected, power down again, reseat it and verify that the card type matches the console generation before considering replacement.
Keep the card in the console when traveling unless you have a specific reason to move it. Removing it repeatedly increases the chance of loss or contact damage, and a card containing downloaded games may be difficult to replace during a trip.
Match accessories to common player profiles
Minimal handheld player
- Console-specific carrying case with screen protector.
- One compatible microSD card for an original Switch-family console, or microSD Express for Switch 2.

Buying checks that prevent expensive mistakes
Confirm the console revision
Write down whether you own the original Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED or Switch 2 before shopping. Use that name when checking case dimensions, screen-protector shape, charging accessories and storage cards. A listing that says only Nintendo Switch may cover one revision while excluding another.
Separate protection from capacity
A slim case maximizes portability; an all-in-one case maximizes equipment capacity. Neither is universally better. Count the items you carry on a normal trip, then choose the smallest case that protects them without forcing the dock, console or cables into a tight compartment.
Check control requirements
Ask whether you want attached Joy-Con, detached Joy-Con, a charging grip or a traditional Pro Controller. A charging station helps only with controller availability, while the Pro Controller changes the feel of play. If a game relies on individual Joy-Con functions, retain a charged Joy-Con pair even after buying a Pro Controller.
Verify headset details

Inspect return and fit policies

The console does not fit the case

Wired networking does not work
- Confirm that the USB LAN adapter is connected through the dock and that the Ethernet cable reaches an active router port.
- Try a different cable or router port before replacing the adapter.
