There is no evidence-based universal winner between Mumbai and Chennai for a continuous YouTube live stream. If the same VPS provider offers comparable instances in both cities, test each from the actual provider and choose the location with the steadier upload to YouTube’s ingest endpoint for your bitrate and workload. A cloud region listing confirms that infrastructure exists there; it does not reveal how reliably a specific VPS can reach YouTube.

What decides whether a VPS location is suitable?

For a continuous stream, the important measure is not the city’s name or a speed-test peak. It is whether the specific VPS, on its actual route to YouTube, can sustain the configured bitrate with headroom and without disruptive variation. Congestion and other network factors can cause delays even when average capacity appears sufficient, as YouTube explains in its live-stream latency guidance.

  • Sustained upload: Can the VPS continuously send more than the encoder’s configured bitrate?
  • Route and stream health: Do repeated YouTube test streams show stable health and few or no dropped frames?
  • Compute fit: Can the selected instance handle the chosen encoding workload without overload?
  • Cost and terms: What do the instance, bandwidth or egress, traffic limits, and streaming terms cost? Current provider-specific prices and terms are not established here.
  • Recovery: Does your setup reconnect or restart safely if the process, VPS, or stream connection fails?

City availability alone does not answer these questions, and a speed test by itself does not prove that a long-running stream will remain stable.

Which cloud locations are available in each city?

Several major cloud providers list infrastructure in both cities, but coverage depends on the service and provider. Oracle lists Mumbai and Chennai locations on its India cloud regions page. Microsoft lists West India (Mumbai) and South India (Chennai) in its India region announcement. Google’s Live Stream API location list includes Mumbai (`asia-south1`), not Chennai. These examples are not a complete inventory of VPS vendors, and a managed cloud service’s region list does not guarantee that a particular VPS size is offered there.

These listings also do not rank YouTube routes. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a managed live-transcoding pipeline: its documentation describes creating an input endpoint and channel, storing outputs in Cloud Storage, and placing related resources close together. That is a different setup from running an encoder on a standalone VPS and sending it directly to YouTube.

How to compare Mumbai and Chennai VPS instances

  1. Choose comparable candidates. Use the same VPS provider if possible, with comparable CPU, memory, network terms, operating system, and encoder configuration. If provider or instance specifications differ, record those differences; otherwise you may mistake a hardware or policy difference for a city effect.
  2. Set the intended stream configuration. Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and bitrate you plan to run continuously. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists H.264 recommendations including 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not guaranteed VPS capacity requirements; allow upload headroom and test your actual stream.
  3. Check the encoder settings. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds for the listed RTMP/RTMPS setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary encoder use. Choose the appropriate ingest server and stream key in your encoder or streaming application; keep the key private.
  4. Run a representative test from each VPS. Use the same video and audio content, settings, and test procedure from both locations. YouTube recommends testing before going live, including representative audio and movement. A static image may not expose the same encoding load or network behavior as the real stream.
  5. Observe YouTube stream health and the VPS. Check YouTube Live Control Room health messages and dropped frames, and monitor the encoder for overload, reconnects, and sustained outbound bitrate. Repeat tests at different times if practical; one short run can miss variation.
  6. Choose for the workload, then keep monitoring. Select the candidate that maintains stable ingest with adequate headroom for your intended bitrate and encoding workload. Treat the result as specific to those instances and routes at the time of testing, not a permanent Mumbai-versus-Chennai ranking.

No comparative Mumbai-versus-Chennai VPS test or direct YouTube ingest benchmark is established here, so there is no defensible city winner statistic to quote.

Do not confuse viewer latency with VPS-to-YouTube performance

YouTube’s latency modes describe the delay viewers may experience; they do not measure the sender’s route from a Mumbai or Chennai VPS to YouTube ingest. YouTube describes low latency as under 10 seconds for most viewers and ultra-low latency as under 5 seconds for most viewers. Both exclude 4K, and ultra-low latency can increase buffering risk. Those figures are about viewer playback, not a city comparison.

Likewise, AWS’s 2021 announcement of Mumbai and Chennai edge locations described a 5–10 second experience for Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS). AWS notes that IVS latency can depend on streamer location, viewer location, and the ISPs involved. IVS uses its own managed service network; that evidence does not establish YouTube ingest performance from either city.

RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS?

For an ordinary encoder sending a stream to YouTube, use RTMPS as YouTube recommends. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide describes HLS for premium, high-quality or high-resolution streams at relatively higher latency. HLS is not a general fix for an unknown route or unstable VPS connection; choose it only when your workflow and YouTube’s ingestion requirements call for it.

Keep a continuous stream running

A VPS location is only one part of continuity. The encoder or playback process, network connection, stream key, and recovery behavior all matter. Plan for process restarts and reconnection, monitor YouTube health, and verify that your video or playlist can resume as intended after a failure. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a stable connection, a tested configuration, and monitoring stream health during the event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own VPS encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer and home connection can be off.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Mumbai VPS guarantee lower YouTube stream latency than a Chennai VPS?

No. Region listings and viewer-latency figures do not establish the quality of a particular VPS-to-YouTube route; test the actual instances.

Can I choose a Google Cloud Mumbai region for a YouTube stream?

Google lists Mumbai (`asia-south1`) for its Live Stream API. That managed service listing does not by itself establish VPS availability or performance for direct encoder-to-YouTube streaming.
