There is no universal MR. RECORDS preset for BPM, first-beat offset, scroll speed, or music volume. The dependable approach is to calibrate each song: select the music, set tempo, place beat one with a separate offset, verify timing in the opening, middle, and later phrases, then tune readability and difficulty through controlled playtests.
What the “best settings” actually mean
In MR. RECORDS, a good setting is not a number that works for every track. It is a combination that keeps events musically aligned, readable on the intended display, and demanding without becoming arbitrary. A song can begin in time and still drift badly by its later chorus if the tempo is wrong. Conversely, a correct tempo can leave every event consistently early or late when the first-beat offset is misplaced.
Treat synchronization and playability as separate jobs. Tempo and first-beat offset establish where events belong in the song. Scroll speed, event density, pattern complexity, and input demand determine how difficult those events are to read and execute. Music volume determines whether the track supports, rather than masks, the hit sounds and obstacle cues that confirm timing.

Know what each editor control changes

Keeping these roles distinct prevents a common mistake: changing a visual setting to compensate for a musical error. If events drift, return to tempo. If they are all shifted by roughly the same amount, return to offset. Only after those checks should you adjust readability or difficulty.
Build a reliable level from a blank record
1. Select the correct music source
Start by choosing one of the editor’s two source paths:
- Import Music for a custom track.
- Use Game Music when the level is built around the game soundtrack.
Decide this before authoring. Changing the source changes the audio line against which every event is judged, so notes placed for one track should not be assumed to fit another. Listen through enough of the song to identify its opening, a representative middle passage, and a later section with a different phrase or chorus.
2. Set tempo before placing events
Tempo establishes the distance between beats on the editor timeline. Set it before adding dense note patterns, obstacles, or effects. When the value is wrong, the first phrase may appear convincing while later phrases move progressively away from the music. Manual corrections made on top of a wrong tempo create extra work and usually leave new errors elsewhere.
Use a short, clearly pulsed passage rather than an ambiguous intro. A steady drum or repeated rhythmic figure is easier to judge than a free-form vocal entrance. Once you have a candidate tempo, move through more than one phrase. The goal is not to make one bar look right; it is to keep the same beat spacing valid throughout the song.
3. Place beat one with the first-beat offset
Offset is a separate control. It determines where beat one falls in the audio, while tempo determines the distance from one beat to the next. If the offset is wrong, events can be consistently early or late from the beginning even when the beat spacing is perfect.

Find the first unmistakable downbeat or musical attack and align beat one to it. Recheck the opening after making the change, then listen again farther into the track. Do not compensate for a starting shift by changing tempo: that may improve the first seconds while introducing drift later.
4. Verify synchronization in three locations
Before building a complicated pattern, play a short representative section repeatedly and inspect three points:
- Opening: confirms that beat one starts at the intended audio event.
- Middle: reveals gradual timing drift that is easy to miss at the beginning.
- Later phrase: confirms that the chosen beat rate continues to hold after many measures.
If all three locations are aligned, keep the tempo and offset fixed while you author. If the opening is right but later phrases drift, correct tempo. If every location is shifted by about the same amount, correct offset. Make that correction before manually moving many events.
Choose scroll speed for readable reactions
Scroll speed controls how quickly events travel toward the player. It changes the time available to read and react, but it does not change musical alignment. A level can be perfectly synchronized and still feel unfair when events arrive too quickly to distinguish.
Use a representative phrase, not an empty test lane
Evaluate scroll speed on a phrase that contains the level’s intended combination of notes, obstacles, and effects. A sparse opening may feel comfortable at a speed that becomes overwhelming once density increases. Replay the same phrase while changing only scroll speed; otherwise you cannot tell which adjustment caused the improvement or problem.

Account for the complete reaction chain
Readability includes more than travel time. The player must identify the event, determine the required input, locate the next event, and respond on the correct beat. Higher density, more complex patterns, and greater input demand all consume part of that time. When those factors rise together, even a moderate scroll speed can become excessive.

If events are synchronized but hard to read, lower one difficulty lever and retest the phrase. Start with scroll speed when the approach itself feels rushed. If the lane remains visually crowded, reduce density or pattern complexity instead. Keep the musical timing unchanged while making these readability decisions.
Balance music volume with timing feedback
The editor provides a music-volume control, but no official default value is established. Set it by listening for the complete feedback mix rather than by chasing a particular number. The track should remain clear while hit sounds, obstacle cues, miss effects, and other timing feedback remain easy to hear.
A practical listening check
- Play a phrase containing ordinary hits and at least one obstacle cue.
- Listen for the confirmation sound immediately after a successful input.
- Listen for the obstacle warning and miss effect without turning your attention away from the music.
- Reduce music volume if the song masks those cues; raise it only if the track has become difficult to follow.
Repeat this check on the intended controller and display setup. A mix that is clear through one listening arrangement may be less clear through another. Volume cannot repair a note that is musically misplaced, so finish tempo and offset calibration first.

Short musical sections are easier to judge and revise than a complete song filled in at once. Add notes, obstacles, and effects to one phrase, play it, and then move to the next. This keeps the cause of a problem visible: you know which addition changed the feel of the level.
Increase one major difficulty factor at a time
Difficulty comes from the combined effect of several levers:
- Scroll speed.
- Event density.
- Pattern complexity.
- Input demand.
Change one of these substantially at a time, then replay the same phrase. For example, keep the pattern and input requirements stable while testing a faster scroll speed. If the phrase remains readable, you can evaluate whether additional density is appropriate. Changing every lever simultaneously makes it impossible to identify the source of an unfair spike.

Use the music’s structure as the organizing principle
Place events where the musical phrase gives the player a reason to expect them. Repeated rhythmic figures can support repeated, readable patterns; a new section can introduce a controlled increase in demand. The editor’s music line is the reference for these decisions, but visual complexity should not obscure the beat that makes the pattern learnable.

Recheck after every dense addition
Dense patterns can expose synchronization mistakes that were not obvious in a sparse test. After adding a cluster of events, replay the phrase and then spot-check a later phrase. If timing is wrong, fix tempo or offset rather than dragging individual events into place. If timing is right but execution is difficult, reduce one of the difficulty levers.
Playtest for fairness, not just completion
A record is ready for broader sharing only after it works as a complete experience. Play through the opening, a representative middle, and a later section without editing between those checks. Pay attention to whether difficulty rises intentionally or jumps because several settings changed together.
Playtest checklist
- Beat one is aligned to the intended audio attack.
- Beat spacing remains aligned in later phrases.
- Events can be read before the required reaction.
- Pattern changes are understandable rather than surprise inputs.
- Obstacles and effects do not hide the notes that matter.
- Music does not mask hit sounds, obstacle cues, or miss effects.
- The level remains manageable on the controller and display setup for which it was designed.
When a phrase fails, isolate the failure. Uniform early or late timing points to offset. Progressive drift points to tempo. Correct timing with poor readability points to scroll speed, density, or pattern complexity. Weak timing feedback points to the music mix. This classification keeps revisions targeted.
Diagnose common timing and playability problems

Why manual event moving is often the wrong first fix
Moving individual events can hide a global calibration error for one phrase while preserving it elsewhere. A tempo error affects beat spacing throughout the timeline; an offset error affects the starting position. Correct those controls first, then use manual placement for intentional musical choices rather than compensation.
When a section feels unfair despite correct timing
Check the combined demand rather than searching for a synchronization fault. A faster approach, denser lane, more complex pattern, and higher input demand can each be tolerable alone but excessive together. Reduce one factor, replay the exact section, and keep the change only if readability improves without removing the intended musical challenge.

What is—and is not—an official preset
No universal BPM, first-beat-offset, scroll-speed, or music-volume numbers are published in the available editor material. There is also no stated latency benchmark or official numeric difficulty scale. Any value a creator chooses is therefore a song- and setup-specific playtest decision, not a developer default that should be copied across records.
This matters when sharing advice. Saying “use the best speed” without naming the song section, pattern density, controller, and display can mislead other creators. Share the reasoning instead: identify how tempo was verified across phrases, how beat one was aligned, which difficulty lever was changed, and what feedback remained audible.
Export and share a finished record
Once the record has passed its playtests, use the editor’s documented community workflow to export it as a ZIP and share it. Before exporting, play the complete record once more from its normal starting point. This final run catches accidental edits, an unfinished phrase, or a volume change made during testing.

Keep the exported version tied to the calibrated music source. A record authored against imported music should not be presented as though it uses the game soundtrack, and vice versa.
A repeatable settings sequence
For every new record, use this order so that later choices do not conceal earlier errors:
- Choose the source: select Import Music or Use Game Music.
- Calibrate tempo: match beat spacing using a clear rhythmic passage.
- Set first-beat offset: align beat one to the correct audio attack.
- Verify three locations: test the opening, middle, and later phrases.
- Select scroll speed: give the intended player enough time to read and react.
- Balance volume: keep the track clear without masking timing feedback.
- Author in phrases: add notes, obstacles, and effects in short sections.
- Escalate carefully: change only one major difficulty factor at a time.
- Playtest the whole record: use the intended controller and display setup.
- Export and share: save the tested record and export its ZIP.
The best MR. RECORDS settings are consequently a verification process, not a fixed preset. When tempo and offset are correct, scroll speed and authoring choices can shape challenge without being asked to repair synchronization; when volume preserves both music and feedback, the result is easier to learn, judge, and replay.
