There is no verified final-release Modern Warfare 4 network-settings preset yet. Activision’s available official information, reviewed on October 3, 2026, confirms a beta and a scheduled October 23, 2026 release, but does not publish recommended MW4 router, DNS, NAT, QoS, or in-game values. For now, check service status, test a wired connection if you use Wi-Fi, and run your platform’s connection diagnostics rather than changing settings based on an unverified preset.
What network settings are confirmed for Modern Warfare 4?
None of the specific final-game network values are confirmed in the official material available before launch. Activision’s August 2026 release information schedules the game for October 23, 2026. Its MW4 beta patch notes document beta information, not a final-release networking guide. That means there is no substantiated MW4-specific recommendation here for DNS servers, NAT type, port forwarding, DMZ, or router QoS.
Activision’s older connection guide for the earlier Modern Warfare offers general troubleshooting, not a confirmed MW4 menu walkthrough or preset. Treat its advice as general guidance and use current platform instructions for diagnostic menus.
How to troubleshoot an unstable connection
- Check service status first. Look for Call of Duty service alerts and your platform’s network-status notices. Activision’s connection guide notes that outages or maintenance can cause connection problems; changing your home router during an outage may not help.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. If you play over Wi-Fi, connect the platform directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and compare play under similar conditions. Activision describes Wi-Fi reliability and bandwidth as variable and recommends a wired connection for more consistent online play. This is a reasonable test, not a guaranteed fix; a cable does not correct server-side issues or a poor ISP route.
- Run your platform’s connection test. Use the current network diagnostics for your console or PC. Activision’s older guide describes tests for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, including an Xbox multiplayer connection test, but those legacy paths may not match current platform menus. Follow the platform’s current support instructions rather than relying on outdated menu labels.
- Separate a game-specific problem from a wider connection issue. If your platform test succeeds but MW4 still lags, note any in-game ping or packet-loss readings if the final game exposes them. Check whether other online games are affected and compare at another time. The reviewed official sources do not confirm MW4 telemetry labels or locations, so this is a diagnostic approach, not a menu instruction.
- Contact your ISP if wired tests remain poor across services. Persistent instability or high latency across multiple services is less likely to be fixed by a game setting. Activision identifies ISP quality and geographic distance from servers as factors in latency.
What ping tells you—and what it cannot fix
Ping, also called latency, is the time data takes to travel between locations, measured in milliseconds. Lower latency generally means less delay in communication, but the number is not controlled by a single local setting. Your connection, ISP routing, distance to a game server, and game/server timing all matter.

Activision’s 2024 technical paper uses 200 milliseconds as an example of latency that would make for a poor Call of Duty experience. That is an illustrative example from Activision, not a universal cutoff or an MW4-specific recommended maximum. The paper also explains that in-game latency involves simulation, server tick rate, and client frame rate as well as the network path. Improving your local link or reducing household congestion can help with factors you control; it cannot change server placement or the game’s simulation timing. See Activision’s technical paper on ping and matchmaking.
Activision’s January 2024 matchmaking explainer says matchmaking considers connection quality alongside time to find a match. Its statement that “The Call of Duty netcode, which we’ve discussed in the past, works to reduce the effect of latency, but cannot completely eliminate it” describes Call of Duty generally; it is not a measured claim about MW4 performance or a setting players can use to force the closest server.

Should you change router settings such as QoS or port forwarding?
Do not apply a router preset just because it is labeled for gaming. Only consider a feature such as QoS when your router manufacturer documents it and your household’s traffic indicates congestion—for example, competing uploads or downloads coincide with the problem. Activision’s older Black Ops 4 lag article mentions QoS, but that title-specific legacy advice does not establish an MW4 configuration.
Likewise, the available evidence does not support universal port-forwarding, DMZ, DNS, or NAT instructions for MW4. Router interfaces and platform requirements vary, and opening access without a verified need can expose devices or services unnecessarily. Start with service status and connection tests; make router changes only when current platform or router documentation identifies a specific issue and setting.

Protect network details in screenshots and streams
A 2019 Xbox One guide for the earlier Modern Warfare described a Network section showing near-real-time ping and packet-loss readings, geographic region, and internal and external IP addresses. It warned players to hide IP and geographic details when streaming or sharing captures. That is a legacy interface description, not evidence that MW4 uses the same panel. If MW4 or your platform displays network identifiers, review screenshots before posting and obscure sensitive details.
