The most effective MMO chat setup is layered: hide high-volume public channels, keep only the party, guild, and direct-message channels you use, turn on the strongest text filter available, then ignore or block disruptive senders without replying. Use the game’s dedicated spam or RMT report for advertisements and its harassment route for abuse. Because labels and block scope differ by title and platform, verify the current in-game path before relying on a setting.
Start with a quiet default chat tab
Public channels are the main source of volume. Trade, zone, shout, and global channels can fill a window faster than you can read it, which makes legitimate group communication easy to miss. A better default is a tab that shows only conversations you need during play.
Choose the channels worth keeping
- Party or group: Keep this visible for tactics, loot calls, ready checks, and urgent instructions.
- Guild or free company: Keep it if you actively coordinate with guildmates; otherwise place it on a separate tab.
- Direct messages: Keep tells, whispers, or private messages visible if you need to receive them. A later ignore or block action can handle individual abuse.
- Local, zone, trade, shout, and global: Hide these from the main tab when they create more noise than value. You can retain a second tab for occasional browsing.
Build a low-noise tab
Look for a cog, gear, or chat-options control on the chat window. In The Elder Scrolls Online, the official path is to open the chat window, choose the cog, select Options, and check or clear the filters for the channels you want. Use that model even when your game uses different wording: open chat settings, disable unwanted channels on the active tab, and save the tab as your normal view.
Do not disable every channel as a first reaction. If you hide party, guild, or direct messages, you may solve spam by also hiding the people you are trying to coordinate with. Separate tabs are safer: one quiet tab for play and one optional tab for public conversation.

Turn on profanity masking, with realistic expectations
A profanity filter changes what is displayed; it does not stop the sender from contacting you. It is useful when offensive words are the problem, but it is not a substitute for an ignore list or a report.
Select the strongest level you can tolerate
Use the maximum or strongest text setting when you want the least offensive language on screen. Some games offer only an on/off switch; others expose levels. Guild Wars 2, for example, lists None, Normal, and Maximum. Choose Maximum for a family-friendly or work-adjacent environment, and a lower level only when masking legitimate game terms causes problems.
Expect asterisks or other non-letter characters in place of detected words. Filters can miss deliberate misspellings, coded language, images, voice chat, or harassment that contains no profanity. If the behavior is targeted or persistent, move to contact controls and reporting.

Ignore, mute, and block the sender immediately
When one player is responsible for repeated messages, changing global settings is less efficient than acting on that account. Do not answer the message: replies confirm that you are reading and can encourage more contact.
Use the fastest available action
- Open the chat log or right-click the character’s name in the message.
- Choose Ignore, Mute, Blacklist, or Block, depending on the title.
- Confirm the action and check whether the game offers an account-wide or UserID-level option.
- Return to play and record the message only if you may need evidence for a report.
ESO supports blocking from the chat window or the Social menu and can ignore a UserID’s associated characters. That is broader than blocking one visible character, so check which scope your selection uses. In Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix advises adding an RMT sender to the blacklist or mute list as an initial way to filter unwanted says, shouts, and tells.

Know what a block may not cover
An ignore action can affect text visibility without preventing every other interaction. Depending on the game, the player may still be able to send mail, invite you to a party, trade with you, or contact you through another character or platform. Treat the menu’s description as authoritative. If a player bypasses the limit, save the new evidence and escalate rather than starting a public argument.
Report advertisements and harassment through the correct route
Use the category that matches the conduct. A real-money-trading advertisement is not the same report type as threats, insults, stalking, or disruptive play, and using the wrong category can slow review.
RMT and commercial spam
In FFXIV, right-click the character in the chat log and choose Report > Report RMT Activity for an advertisement. The game also provides a specific menu for RMT advertisements sent through Say, Shout, and Tell messages. After reporting, blacklist or mute the sender so further messages do not remain in view.
Verbal or play-related harassment
For FFXIV harassment, use System > Support Desk > Contact Us > Report Harassment. Include the relevant character, approximate time, channel, and a concise description of what happened. Do not bundle an RMT advertisement into a harassment report when a dedicated RMT option is available.
Ongoing harassment in other games
Blizzard’s harassment guidance is direct: place the character or characters on ignore, do not respond, and submit a ticket when the harassment continues. Attempts to bypass ignore or other communication limits are a reason to escalate for investigation, not a reason to keep debating in chat.

Preserve evidence without amplifying the offender
Evidence is most useful when it shows context and identifies the account. Before clearing the chat window, capture a screenshot or save the relevant chat-log details if your game supports it.
- Include the sender’s visible character name, UserID, or account identifier.
- Keep enough preceding and following lines to show whether the message was an advertisement, a threat, or ordinary disagreement.
- Record the server, world, region, channel, and approximate time when those details are available.
- Save multiple examples when the conduct is repeated, especially after an ignore or block was applied.
- Do not edit the image so heavily that the game, sender, or sequence becomes unclear.
Submit only what the support form requests. Avoid reposting abusive text in public channels, where it can expose other players and create a second moderation problem.
Use the game’s rules to distinguish reportable conduct
Not every unwanted message violates a rule. ArenaNet’s Guild Wars Rules of Conduct prohibit spamming, flooding, and duplicate posts in global chat, and they also prohibit malicious reports. That distinction is practical: report behavior that is disruptive, deceptive, abusive, or otherwise against the published rules, rather than filing reports solely because a message is unpopular.
A single unsolicited trade message may be annoying but still belong in the spam or RMT route. Repeated flooding, deceptive sales, targeted insults, threats, sexual harassment, or attempts to evade an ignore list justify stronger action. When uncertain, use the category whose description most closely matches the conduct and explain the facts without speculation.
Compare the settings that matter across MMOs
When you move between games, evaluate the chat system on five separate axes. A title may be excellent on channel filtering but weak on contact controls, or provide a strong report form without a configurable profanity level.

Recommended setups for common play styles
Solo questing
Use a tab with party, guild, and direct messages enabled, then hide zone, trade, shout, and global channels. Set profanity masking to the strongest level that does not obscure quest terminology. Keep the chat context menu available so you can ignore a sender in one click.
Group content and raids
Keep party, alliance, raid, and direct messages on the active tab. Put public channels on a secondary tab rather than allowing them to scroll through combat instructions. If a disruptive player is in the group, mute or ignore them after preserving the minimum evidence needed for a report; do not let an argument consume the group’s communication channel.
Trading and social hubs
Trading requires more public visibility, so use separate tabs instead of turning every filter off everywhere. Keep a trade-focused tab for market activity and a quiet tab for guild or private conversation. RMT advertisements should be reported through the dedicated option, then blacklisted or muted.
Players who receive harassment
Use maximum profanity masking, hide high-volume public channels, and apply the account-level ignore or block option when available. Capture a clear record of the behavior, including attempts to bypass the block, and submit it through the game’s harassment or support route.

Troubleshoot when spam still appears
The message remains after filtering
Check whether you changed the active tab or only created a new tab. Reopen the chat options and verify each channel checkbox. Some games have separate combat, system, and social logs, so the same message may be visible in another window.

The profanity filter hides useful words
Lower the filter one level or keep a second tab with a less aggressive setting. Do not disable it globally just to read one legitimate term. You can still ignore a specific sender and report the surrounding conduct.
The player contacts you from another character
Check whether the original action was character-only. If the title supports UserID- or account-level ignores, use that scope. Save examples showing the bypass and send them to support as ongoing harassment.
You cannot find a report option
Open the character’s context menu from the chat log first; many games expose report categories there rather than in general settings. If no contextual option exists, open the system or support menu and look for separate spam, RMT, or harassment forms. Use the current in-game labels for your platform and edition.
A five-minute setup checklist
- Create or edit a chat tab for normal play.
- Hide trade, zone, shout, and global channels that you do not actively need.
- Leave party, guild, and direct-message channels visible when you rely on them.
- Enable the strongest practical profanity filter.
- Learn the chat-log command for ignore, mute, blacklist, or block.
- Locate separate RMT/spam and harassment report paths before you need them.
- Know whether your block applies to a character, UserID, account, channel, or platform.
- Capture relevant screenshots or log details when conduct continues or bypasses a block.
- Report facts through the official route and stop responding in public chat.
This layered approach keeps useful MMO communication available while reducing exposure to noise, offensive language, and repeat contact. Filters control what you see, ignore tools control who can reach you, and correctly categorized reports give the publisher the information needed for action.
