Best overall for very large local models: a mini PC built on AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128GB of unified memory. It gives the memory capacity needed for many 70B to roughly 200B-parameter quantized models in a genuinely small system. If you need to load models above that range, AMD Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495 raises unified memory to 192GB and AMD says it can support 300B-plus models at 4-bit quantization. Choose an NVIDIA RTX 50-series mini PC instead when CUDA, NIM, or discrete-GPU throughput is more important than maximum model size and your model fits within the GPU’s available VRAM.

Which mini PC should you buy for local AI?

Start with memory capacity, not the processor name. A local language model must hold its quantized weights, the key-value (KV) cache for your context window, and runtime overhead in accessible memory. Once the model fits, compare sustained generation speed, time to first token, software support, cooling and total system price.

Best for Platform to prioritize Published capacity or ceiling Why it stands out Main limitation
Large models in the smallest practical system AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PC Up to 128GB LPDDR5x unified memory; AMD states platform support for models up to 200B parameters CPU and integrated GPU share one large memory pool, so a model is not trapped by a small discrete-GPU VRAM allocation Memory is normally fixed; sustained performance depends heavily on the system’s cooling and power limits
300B-class experimentation AMD Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495 Up to 192GB unified memory, with up to 160GB assignable as graphics memory; AMD claims support for 300B-plus models at 4-bit quantization The highest stated memory ceiling among these compact platforms Developer-platform pricing and retail availability vary; the published US preorder price was a one-time snapshot
CUDA software and discrete-GPU acceleration NVIDIA RTX 50-series mini PC Up to 32GB of GPU VRAM; FP4 support CUDA and NVIDIA NIM compatibility, plus support for tools such as LM Studio, AnythingLLM, ComfyUI and LangChain A model that exceeds VRAM must be split or offloaded, usually reducing simplicity and speed
General local assistants with moderate models Any platform with enough usable memory for the selected quantization and context Depends on the exact configuration Lower cost and heat than a maximum-memory system Buying too little memory prevents running the models you actually want

The phrase “AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 128GB mini PC” is useful when searching listings, but verify the exact RAM, SSD, seller, price and regional stock. Mini PCs using the same processor can have materially different cooling and power settings.

How much memory does a local LLM need?

Parameter count is only the starting point. At 4-bit quantization, the weights alone require approximately half a byte per parameter before metadata and runtime allocations. A 7B model therefore needs roughly 3.5GB for weights, a 13B model about 6.5GB, a 34B model about 17GB and a 70B model about 35GB. Real use needs additional room for quantization scales, the model runner, operating-system allocations and the KV cache. Longer context windows increase KV-cache use, sometimes substantially.

Practical capacity bands

  • 16GB total memory: comfortable for small models; larger models require aggressive quantization and short contexts.
  • 32GB: suitable for many 7B to 13B models and selected 30B-class models, depending on quantization and context.
  • 64GB: a practical target for 30B to 70B experimentation, with enough headroom for a useful context window when the runtime is efficient.
  • 128GB: the first mini-PC tier that makes 70B models routine and opens the door to much larger quantized models. It is the key reason Ryzen AI Max+ 395 systems are the leading compact choice for model capacity.
  • 192GB: gives the Halo PRO 495 room for 300B-plus 4-bit experiments under AMD’s stated platform capability, although actual speed and supported model formats depend on the runner.

These are planning estimates, not guarantees. Before buying, check the selected model’s published file size, add room for the KV cache at your intended context length, and leave capacity for the operating system and applications. A model can technically load yet become unusably slow if memory pressure forces excessive swapping or data movement.

AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395: best balance for large local models

Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PCs combine a high-end mobile processor with a large unified LPDDR5x memory pool. AMD specifies configurations with up to 128GB and a neural processing unit rated at up to 50 TOPS. More important for LLMs, the CPU and integrated graphics can access the same memory, so the model is not limited to a small 8GB or 12GB discrete-GPU partition.

What it can run

AMD states that the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 platform supports models up to 200B parameters. That is a vendor-level capability statement rather than a promise that every 200B model will generate quickly. A 4-bit 70B model is a much more realistic daily-driver target; 120B to 200B models require careful quantization, context limits and a runner that handles the platform efficiently.

Why unified memory matters

  • The entire installed pool can be available to model weights, unlike a discrete card whose VRAM is a hard first limit.
  • CPU and GPU work can share model data without copying the full model between separate memory domains.
  • You can allocate more memory to graphics workloads when a model needs it, but the operating system and applications still consume part of the pool.

The trade-off is that unified memory is generally soldered and cannot be upgraded later. Buy the capacity you expect to need, rather than assuming a future RAM upgrade will rescue a cheaper configuration.

AMD Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495: the capacity leader

AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495 platform is aimed at developers who need to load exceptionally large models in a compact system. AMD specifies up to 192GB of unified memory, with as much as 160GB allocatable as graphics memory. AMD says the platform can support 300-billion-parameter and larger language models at 4-bit quantization.

Who should choose Halo

Halo makes sense when a 128GB system is a hard capacity limit rather than merely a budget choice. It gives researchers and developers room for 120B, 200B and 300B-class experiments without moving to a workstation or multi-GPU server. It is also useful when a large context window or several models must remain resident.

Price and availability qualification

Tom’s Hardware reported a US preorder price of $3,999 for the Ryzen AI Halo Developer Platform on 13 June 2026. The report described Linux and Windows 11 variants. That was a preorder price, not a universal street price or a guarantee of current stock; confirm the current configuration, shipping region, warranty and included storage before treating it as a buying benchmark.

When RTX is the better answer

  • Your required model and context fit comfortably inside the installed VRAM.
  • Your workflow depends on CUDA libraries, NVIDIA NIM containers or a tool whose best-supported backend is CUDA.
  • You value discrete-GPU throughput and mature GPU-oriented deployment over maximum model capacity.
  • You plan to use the same machine for image generation or other CUDA workloads that benefit from a dedicated GPU.

The constraint is straightforward: a 32GB card cannot hold a model whose weights, cache and runtime require more than 32GB. CPU offload or multi-device splitting can make larger models possible, but it adds configuration complexity and often lowers throughput. Compare usable VRAM, not the total system RAM printed on a product page.

AMD unified memory versus NVIDIA VRAM

Decision factor AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 or Halo NVIDIA RTX 50-series
Largest stated model capacity 128GB on Max+ 395; 192GB on Halo, with AMD’s 300B-plus 4-bit claim Up to 32GB VRAM per RTX 50-series GPU
Memory architecture Unified CPU/GPU memory Dedicated GPU VRAM, with optional system-RAM offload
Software path Check ROCm, Vulkan or the runner’s exact AMD backend CUDA and NIM are the primary compatibility advantages
Best fit Large quantized models that exceed typical card VRAM Models that fit VRAM and need CUDA-optimized throughput or tooling
Upgradeability Unified memory is generally fixed VRAM is fixed; system RAM may be upgradeable depending on the mini-PC design

Neither architecture wins every workload. A smaller model that fits entirely in fast RTX VRAM can respond faster than a much larger model spread across a unified-memory system. Conversely, the RTX machine cannot load a model that simply exceeds its available VRAM without offloading.

Performance: measure the workload you will actually run

Do not compare TOPS, CPU model names or theoretical GPU throughput as if they were tokens per second. Run the same model file, quantization, context length, prompt, generation length and software runtime on each candidate. Record both time to first token and sustained output tokens per second. Also note power mode, fan behavior and whether the system throttles after several minutes.

AMD reported 1.7 times more tokens per dollar than an NVIDIA DGX Spark in an LM Studio comparison using AMD’s 2025 testing and December 2025 market prices. That result is directional vendor evidence, not a universal ranking: different models, context lengths, software versions, power limits and prices can reverse the result.

A repeatable comparison procedure

  1. Choose the exact model and quantization you intend to use, then record its file size.
  2. Set an identical context length and prompt on every system.
  3. Use the same runner where both platforms support it, or document the backend difference when one system requires CUDA, ROCm or Vulkan.
  4. Measure prompt-processing time, time to first token, steady-state tokens per second and peak memory use.
  5. Repeat a long generation for at least several minutes to expose thermal throttling and fan noise.
  6. Divide the purchase price by the measured sustained throughput, while keeping capacity and software compatibility as separate decision gates.

Software and operating-system checks

Confirm support for the exact model runner before ordering. NVIDIA systems have the clearest path when your application requires CUDA or NIM. NVIDIA also identifies LM Studio, AnythingLLM, ComfyUI and LangChain as supported local-AI tools.

On AMD, verify whether the runner uses ROCm, Vulkan or another backend and whether that backend supports your operating system, GPU architecture and quantization format. A platform can have enough memory yet fail to run a particular model efficiently if the application lacks a suitable acceleration path.

The Ryzen AI Halo Developer Platform was reported with both Linux and Windows 11 variants. For any retail mini PC, check the seller’s supplied drivers, firmware and recovery method; the same hardware can behave differently across operating systems and BIOS power profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cooling, acoustics and sustained operation

Local inference is a sustained workload, not a short benchmark burst. A compact chassis must remove heat from the CPU, integrated graphics and memory subsystem while the model generates tokens. Ask for long-run test data when available, and look for independent measurements of fan noise and throttling rather than relying on a processor’s peak specification.

Buying checklist

  1. Set the model target: write down the largest parameter count, quantization and context length you need.
  2. Calculate capacity: include weights, KV cache, runtime overhead and operating-system headroom.
  3. Pick the memory architecture: choose 128GB unified memory for a strong large-model balance, 192GB Halo for 300B-class capacity, or RTX VRAM when CUDA throughput and tooling dominate.
  4. Validate software: confirm the runner, backend, operating system and quantization format for your exact model.
  5. Check thermals: look for sustained-load results, fan noise and the power limit used for testing.
  6. Compare complete systems: include RAM, SSD, power supply, operating-system license, warranty and shipping; do not compare bare-board prices with ready-to-run machines.
  7. Verify live availability: listings, sellers and regional prices change, especially for developer platforms and high-memory configurations.

Common failure modes and fixes

The model will not load

The usual cause is insufficient usable memory after accounting for the cache and runtime. Select a smaller quantization, reduce context length, close other applications or move to a higher-capacity configuration. On an RTX system, check VRAM first; system RAM does not erase the discrete-card limit.

The model loads but is extremely slow

Confirm that the intended GPU backend is active rather than CPU-only execution. Check whether the model is being offloaded between VRAM and system memory, then reduce context length and test a smaller model. A long run may also reveal thermal throttling, so compare performance at startup and after several minutes.

The runner reports unsupported hardware

Check the application’s release notes and backend requirements for your operating system and GPU architecture. NVIDIA users should verify CUDA or NIM prerequisites. AMD users should verify ROCm or Vulkan support for the exact runner, not merely generic support for the processor family.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory usage keeps growing during a session

Longer context increases KV-cache consumption. Set a context limit, clear or restart the session between tasks, and reserve headroom for the operating system. If your workflow requires a permanently large context, move to a configuration with more unified memory or VRAM.

Bottom line

For most people seeking the largest practical local models in a mini-PC form factor, choose a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system with 128GB of unified memory. It offers the clearest balance of capacity and size, with AMD’s stated support reaching up to 200B parameters. Choose Ryzen AI Halo PRO 495 when 192GB and AMD’s claimed 300B-plus 4-bit capability justify the higher developer-platform cost. Choose an RTX 50-series mini PC when your model fits within up to 32GB of VRAM and CUDA, NIM or discrete-GPU performance is the deciding requirement.
