Its processor’s TDP is not a measure of the whole PC’s idle power, however, and the cited ASUS specifications do not report noise levels. If you need several large hard drives, compare systems with actual drive bays—or use a separate NAS—instead of assuming a mini PC has room for them.
What to check before choosing a mini PC for a home server
“Room for storage” can mean a second M.2 SSD, a 2.5-inch SATA drive, several HDD bays, or storage connected externally or through a NAS. These are not interchangeable: check the exact model’s physical layout, available slots, drive interface and supported form factor before buying.
- Internal drives: Count the usable slots and bays after accounting for the boot drive. Confirm whether each M.2 slot accepts NVMe, SATA, or both, and which drive lengths it supports.
- Power: Look for whole-system idle power measured at the wall with the configuration and test conditions stated. A processor TDP or power-adapter rating is not an idle-power measurement.
- Noise: Seek testing of the exact model at idle and under a representative sustained workload. Fan behavior and acoustic level depend on configuration and conditions; the specifications cited here do not establish which candidate is quietest.
- Networking and memory: Check Ethernet speed and port count, plus the maximum supported memory against the services you plan to run.
- SKU and region: Mini PCs can be sold as bare kits or configured systems. Verify the model identifier and what is included in your market.
ASUS NUC 14 Essential: a compact SSD-focused option
ASUS lists the NUC 14 Essential with 2.5G Ethernet and support for M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 and M.2 2242 SATA storage. Its US kit specification allows up to 16GB of DDR5 SO-DIMM memory and says the kit ships without memory or storage. Other SKUs and regional versions may include components, so check the exact listing and product identifier before ordering.
The kit specification lists Intel N150 and N250 processor options at 6W TDP, Intel N97 at 12W cTDP, and Intel Core 3 N355 at 15W TDP. These are processor specifications, not measurements of total system power at idle. ASUS also specifies a 65W power adapter; that rating does not indicate the PC’s normal operating draw. That combination makes the NUC a candidate for lightweight services where compact size, wired networking and M.2 SSD expansion matter more than high memory capacity or native multi-drive HDD storage. The cited specifications do not list a 2.5-inch drive bay, so do not treat this model as a multi-bay NAS.
When you need more internal SSDs or a SATA bay
Three M.2 slots: AOOSTAR MACO 6850H
A TechRadar review reports three M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots and dual 2.5GbE on the AOOSTAR MACO 6850H. Those features make it a comparison point if you want several internal SSDs and multiple fast wired-network ports. The cited review information does not establish its idle power or noise relative to the NUC, so those should not be inferred from its storage or networking specifications. Two M.2 slots plus a 2.5-inch bay: a separate ASUS example
ASUS’s 2025 business buying guide lists an ExpertCenter mini PC layout with two M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 x4 slots and one 2.5-inch SATA bay. This shows that M.2 and SATA storage can coexist in a mini PC, but it is a specification for that product family—not a layout to assume on the NUC or other ASUS models. Mini PC or separate NAS for several hard drives?
If your plan depends on multiple large HDDs, start with the drive bays, not the processor. The NUC’s cited specification describes M.2 storage and does not list a 2.5-inch bay; neither a high-power adapter rating nor a low-TDP CPU adds space for drives. Compare systems whose documentation explicitly lists the number and type of bays you need, or keep the mini PC for compute and put bulk storage in a separate NAS or external enclosure.

Before committing to a mini PC, make sure the boot drive will not consume the only slot you expected to use for expansion. For M.2 drives, verify the interface and length as well as the slot count: NVMe and SATA M.2 drives are not automatically compatible with the same slot.

Not from the specifications and review details cited here. No comparative acoustic measurements or suitable whole-system idle-power figures establish that one of these candidates is quieter or more efficient than another. To make a meaningful comparison, use results for the exact configuration and look for the wall-power test setup, operating system, drives and network state, along with noise measurements at idle and under sustained load.
