The most reliable setup is conservative: keep Sodium’s defaults, use a frame-time cap your computer can sustain, and lower render, simulation, entity-distance, and effects settings only when you can reproduce a hitch. Keep movement controls unchanged, place battle actions beside that cluster, and verify every binding after mod updates. TurnBasedMinecraftMod’s own entity configuration can also determine whether a fight becomes unusually busy, so not every slowdown is a graphics problem.
This guide covers Minecraft Java Edition installations using TurnBasedMinecraftMod with Forge or NeoForge, including the current CurseForge listing for Minecraft 1.21.8 files. Loader, game, mod, and Sodium versions must match your installation; treat the procedures below as a reversible tuning process rather than a universal preset.

What the mod changes—and why settings alone may not fix a battle
TurnBasedMinecraftMod adds an RPG-style, turn-based battle flow to Minecraft. Its interface presents a battle menu and an entity-selection view, so a normal exploration scene can suddenly become a screen with target highlights, turn-order information, combat text, particles, and several active entities. Those transitions expose frame-time spikes that may not appear while you are standing still.
The mod also changes which entities participate. Its repository documents a commented configuration file at .minecraft/config/TurnBasedMinecraft/TBM_Config.toml. On a server, administrators can add entities from other mods, and the in-game commands /tbm-edit and /tbm-server-edit can edit entries. If a particular encounter is much heavier than expected, inspect the entity and server configuration before rebuilding video settings or the entire modpack.

Start with a reversible baseline
Keep Sodium at its defaults first
Sodium enables the optimizations supported by your system by default. Leave its General, Performance, and Advanced options unchanged until you can describe a repeatable problem. A default baseline gives you a known point of comparison and prevents several interacting changes from hiding the real cause.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Record the baseline before changing anything:
- Minecraft version and loader (Forge or NeoForge).
- TurnBasedMinecraftMod and Sodium versions.
- Whether the hitch occurs while moving the camera, entering a battle, opening a menu, confirming an action, or displaying several entities.
- Whether shaders, an FPS monitor, or another overlay is active.
- Your current render, simulation, entity-distance, cloud, weather, and particle choices.
Use a frame-time target your hardware can actually sustain. No authoritative source publishes one universal FPS or latency number for this mod combination, so a stable, lower cap is preferable to a fluctuating peak that makes input feel uneven.

Change one variable at a time
Make one adjustment, reproduce the same encounter, and note the result. If the change helps, keep it; if it does not, restore the previous value. This approach preserves a working baseline and shows whether the limiting factor is rendering, simulation, entity count, an overlay, or configuration.
Recommended video and performance order
| Area | Starting action | Reason to change it | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Render distance | Leave the current value at the baseline; lower it one step when camera movement or battle transitions hitch. | Fewer distant chunks reduce scene work during a transition. | Whether encounter visibility remains adequate. |
| Simulation distance | Reduce it together with render distance if transitions still spike. | Less world and entity simulation can reduce CPU frame-time pressure. | Mob behavior and encounter timing, not just the frame counter. |
| Entity distance | Lower it when combatants or menus trigger spikes. | Entity rendering is especially relevant when several targets enter combat. | That target highlights and combatants remain readable. |
| Clouds, weather, and particles | Reduce these after distances, one category at a time. | Animated effects add visual work and can obscure battle information. | Turn order, target outlines, particles, and combat text. |
| Frame cap or adaptive sync | Use a cap or adaptive-sync arrangement that your system can hold consistently. | Consistent frame pacing makes menu confirmation and camera movement feel steadier. | Frame-time regularity rather than the highest displayed FPS. |
| Shaders | Disable them while isolating a hitch. | Shaders add a separate rendering workload and complicate diagnosis. | Whether the same encounter is smooth without them. |
| Monitoring overlays | Turn overlays off during testing. | Some overlays hook the renderer and can introduce conflicts. | Whether the hitch disappears with no overlay loaded. |
Sodium’s settings are organized into General, Performance, and Advanced categories. Treat every visual reduction as a readability trade-off: the correct value is the lowest workload that still lets you identify the active target, read the turn order, and see confirmation feedback.
Step-by-step tuning procedure
- Verify the installation. In the launcher or instance manager, confirm the Minecraft version, Forge or NeoForge loader, TurnBasedMinecraftMod build, and Sodium build. Do not mix a configuration made for another version without checking the action names and available options.
- Reproduce a controlled encounter. Use the same area, camera movement, and approximate number of entities. Note whether the problem appears before the battle, when the menu opens, while cycling targets, or after an action is confirmed.
- Restore the baseline. Return Sodium and video settings to their recorded values, disable shaders, and close performance overlays. This distinguishes a mod interaction from a setting that was already too demanding.
- Lower distances together. Reduce render distance and simulation distance by one step, then repeat the encounter. If the hitch is unchanged, restore them and continue to entity distance.
- Reduce entity distance. Lower it one step and test target selection. Stop when combatants, highlights, and battle text become difficult to distinguish.
- Trim effects. Adjust clouds, weather, and particles individually. Keep the setting that removes the spike without hiding the visual cue you use to understand a turn.
- Set pacing. Apply a sustainable frame cap or adaptive-sync setup. Test camera rotation and menu confirmation, not only an idle scene.
- Add features back. Re-enable shaders or overlays one at a time. The first feature that brings the hitch back is the one to investigate.
- Document the working profile. Save the values and the encounter used for testing. A written baseline makes future loader, Sodium, or mod updates easier to troubleshoot.
Keybinds that work during a turn
There is no universal TurnBasedMinecraftMod key map established by its documentation. Action names and defaults can vary by version, so use the Controls screen in your installed build as the authority. The goal is a layout that avoids conflicts and keeps the four battle decisions—attack or primary action, target, confirm, and cancel—within reach.

Keep vanilla movement stable
Do not move walking, sprinting, jump, inventory, or sneak keys merely to make room for a battle action. Familiar movement reduces accidental input when a fight begins, and preserving those bindings makes switching between worlds or modpacks less error-prone.
A practical battle layout
| Battle role | Placement guideline | Validation check |
|---|---|---|
| Primary action or attack | Use a reachable key beside the movement cluster, without replacing a movement key. | It can be pressed without lifting the hand or reaching across the keyboard. |
| Target cycle | Use nearby keys or the mouse wheel, whichever matches how you scan targets. | Forward and reverse cycling are distinguishable and do not scroll another open screen. |
| Confirm or select | Use the same key you already use to select items in menus when the mod permits it. | A single press confirms the highlighted option and does not trigger a second action. |
| Cancel or back | Use Escape or a clearly separate key. | It closes the battle choice without activating the adjacent action. |
Audit conflicts after every update
Open Minecraft’s Controls screen after adding or updating a mod. Search for the battle action by its exact displayed name, assign the key, and look for a conflict indicator. Test the binding in a harmless encounter before relying on it in a server battle. If an action is missing, the installed mod version may have renamed it, disabled it, or moved the behavior into a menu rather than exposing a separate key.
Judge a preset on three axes
Readability
You must be able to identify the active target, follow turn order, read combat text, and distinguish confirmation from cancellation. A setting that raises performance but hides those cues is not a successful battle profile. Reduce particles, weather, or clouds before removing every visual aid.

Frame-time consistency
Watch the moments that matter: turning the camera as combat starts, opening the battle menu, cycling several entities, and confirming an action. A smooth-looking idle scene does not prove that transitions are stable. Compare the same encounter after each change rather than relying on a single peak FPS reading.
Input reach and conflicts
Confirm, cancel, and target changes should be possible without a large hand movement. Check that the mouse wheel does not also change another active control and that a key is not assigned to two actions that can occur in the same battle state.

The camera hitches when a battle opens
- Disable shaders and overlays, then repeat the encounter.
- Lower render and simulation distance together.
- If the problem remains, reduce entity distance and effects.
- Check whether the encounter includes many configured entities or entities added by another mod.
The menu is smooth, but target cycling stalls
- Lower entity distance and particles first.
- Inspect the target list and server entity configuration; an unusually large set of participating entities can resemble a graphics fault.
- Test with the mouse wheel disabled for unrelated actions if scrolling produces an extra event.
Input feels delayed or inconsistent
- Use a sustainable frame cap or adaptive-sync arrangement.
- Remove monitoring overlays during the test.
- Check for duplicate bindings in Controls.
- Compare confirmation and cancellation with shaders disabled so rendering latency is not masking an input conflict.
A hitch appears only with an overlay
Remove the overlay and retest before changing the modpack. Sodium documents severe issues with incompatible versions of RTSS and with ASUS GPU Tweak III. If the hitch disappears when either tool is closed, update, reconfigure, or remove that overlay before making broader Minecraft changes.

Only one world or server is affected
Inspect that world or server’s TurnBasedMinecraftMod configuration. The server can add entities from other mods, and /tbm-server-edit can edit server entries where permitted. A local client setting cannot correct a server-side participation list that creates an unexpectedly busy encounter.
Configuration and update checklist
- Back up
.minecraft/config/TurnBasedMinecraft/TBM_Config.tomlbefore editing it. - Read the comments in the generated file; they describe the available entries for your installed release.
- Use
/tbm-editfor supported in-game edits and/tbm-server-editfor server configuration when you have the required permissions. - After changing entity participation, restart or reload as required by the mod and reproduce the same encounter.
- When updating Minecraft, Forge, NeoForge, Sodium, or TurnBasedMinecraftMod, revisit Controls and retest the saved video profile. Action names, defaults, and overlay compatibility can change.
Support boundaries and safe recovery
Java mods are third-party software. Minecraft Support states that modding is not officially supported and that it cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage. For a failure after an update, first return to the documented baseline, remove shaders and overlays, verify matching versions, and test with the smallest reproducible encounter. Keep backups of configuration files so you can restore a known-good state instead of deleting the whole instance.
There is no independently published benchmark that establishes a universal FPS, latency, or “best” numeric setting for this combination. Hardware-specific observations are useful only when measured on your own system under a repeatable encounter. A good profile is therefore the one that preserves battle readability, keeps frame time consistent, and gives every action an unmistakable, conflict-free key.
