First, check which Minecraft edition you are actually running. Mojang’s official PC listing shows Java Edition for macOS and Bedrock Edition for Windows. There is no officially supported native Bedrock macOS client in that listing, so a Mac user asking about “Bedrock on Mac” is usually using Java, connecting to a Windows installation remotely, or relying on an unofficial workaround.

If you are using a supported Bedrock installation on Windows hardware, tune it in this order: set a frame-rate cap, lower render distance when FPS is low, keep simulation distance no higher than render distance, then reduce graphics effects such as Vibrant Visuals and particles. The settings below explain what each control does and provide starting presets without pretending that one value fits every Mac or Windows setup.

What “Bedrock on Mac” means

Official edition and platform support

The official Minecraft PC store listing separates the editions by operating system: Java Edition is listed for macOS, while Bedrock Edition is listed for Windows. That means Mojang does not present a native Bedrock macOS build in its supported PC lineup. A Mac can still appear in a Bedrock discussion in several ways:

  • You may have Java Edition installed on macOS and be calling it “Minecraft” without checking the edition.
  • You may be controlling Bedrock running on a Windows computer through remote access or streaming.
  • You may be using an unofficial compatibility layer or other workaround whose behavior and support can change independently of Mojang’s Windows client.

These cases have different performance limits. The Bedrock video settings in this guide apply to the Bedrock client itself; they do not turn Java Edition into Bedrock or make an unsupported macOS installation an official product.

Why the distinction changes the advice

Windows Bedrock has the graphics modes, simulation controls and ray-tracing path documented by Microsoft. A remote session adds network and encoding delay that a local graphics slider cannot remove. An unofficial wrapper can expose different options or fail after an update. Confirm the edition and where the game is actually rendered before changing settings.

Set a measurable goal before touching sliders

Choose the frame-rate behavior you want first. A stable cap is generally more useful than an uncapped number that swings sharply: it limits wasted rendering and can make frame pacing feel steadier. Bedrock’s available cap values depend on the current build, so select the nearest option offered by your Video settings rather than relying on a value from an older screenshot.

  • Stability goal: choose a cap the system can hold in your busiest normal scene, not just in an empty world.
  • Display-matched goal: if your display has a known refresh rate, use a cap at or below a rate the client can sustain consistently.
  • Remote-session goal: judge responsiveness as well as the displayed FPS; network latency can remain even when the Bedrock counter looks healthy.

Record your starting cap, render distance, simulation distance and graphics mode. Change one group of settings at a time and test the same area after each change. This prevents a visual improvement or regression from being attributed to the wrong slider.

What each Bedrock setting controls

Frame-rate cap

The cap is a ceiling, not a guarantee. If the client cannot reach it, lowering the cap alone will not cure a rendering bottleneck. Its value is in preventing the game from rendering unnecessary frames when the scene is simple, which can reduce swings between very high and very low frame rates.

Render distance

Render distance is the radius of chunks the client draws. Microsoft explains that a higher distance makes the graphics engine do more work and normally lowers performance. The documented client range is 4 to 96 chunks, depending on the device. A server or Realm can impose a lower limit, so the distance you request in the menu may not be the distance you actually receive online.

Render distance is the first slider to reduce when FPS is low because it directly changes how much geometry, terrain and scenery the client must keep visible. Raise it only after your chosen cap is stable in a representative world.

Simulation distance

Simulation distance controls how far game mechanics continue to tick. Within that radius, the game processes systems such as entities, mob spawning, plant growth and fluid movement. Microsoft describes simulation distance as more expensive than render distance because it affects both client and server work.

The normal range starts at 4 chunks and can reach 12 chunks depending on the device. Keep simulation distance less than or equal to render distance. A simulation radius larger than the visible radius asks the game to process mechanics in areas you cannot see and can add load without improving image quality.

Graphics mode

The Bedrock menu reference lists Simple, Fancy and Ray Traced modes, along with Vibrant Visuals presets. Use the least demanding mode that meets your visual target:

  • Simple: the performance-first choice when maintaining the cap matters more than visual effects.
  • Fancy: a middle ground for systems that can sustain the target with additional visual detail.
  • Ray Traced: a specialized path with substantially higher graphics requirements; it is not the normal choice for troubleshooting a weak or unstable setup.

Vibrant Visuals adds another quality-versus-performance decision. When it causes instability, choose Favor Performance. Use Favor Visuals only after the system can hold the desired cap in the scenes you actually play.

Particles and anti-aliasing load

Microsoft specifically calls out particle effects and Vibrant Visuals as comparatively demanding when render distance is high. Reduce particles before abandoning every other visual setting if effects are causing dips. If your build exposes an anti-aliasing control, lower it when the image-processing load is the remaining bottleneck; the exact choices and names can vary by build.

Starting presets for supported Bedrock hardware

These are tuning starting points, not universal benchmarks. Apply the row closest to your priority, test in your own world, and move one setting at a time. Render and simulation values stay within the ranges Microsoft documents; the effective online value can still be lower.

The table’s values are deliberately starting ranges. Microsoft’s documented limits are 4–96 chunks for render distance and 4–12 chunks for simulation distance, depending on device. A slider at the top of a range is not automatically a good setting: the correct value is the highest one that preserves your selected cap in the places you play.

Step-by-step tuning procedure

1. Verify the edition and rendering location

  1. Open the launcher or game information and identify whether the installation is Java or Bedrock.
  2. Confirm whether Bedrock is rendered locally on supported Windows hardware, streamed from another computer, or launched through an unofficial compatibility method.
  3. If you expected a native Mac Bedrock app, stop and resolve that platform mismatch first; graphics settings cannot supply an unsupported client.

2. Set the cap and capture a baseline

  1. Open Bedrock’s Settings and go to the Video section.
  2. Choose the frame-rate cap available in your build.
  3. Enter a repeatable test area: a base with storage and farms, a village, or another location where you normally notice slowdowns.
  4. Note the cap, render distance, simulation distance, graphics mode, Vibrant Visuals preset, particles and anti-aliasing state.

3. Lower render distance first when FPS is low

  1. Reduce render distance by a small step rather than moving immediately to the minimum.
  2. Return to the same test area and check both average smoothness and the worst moments, such as turning toward a large landscape or flying quickly.
  3. Repeat until the chosen cap is stable, then raise the distance one step at a time if you want more view range.

This order follows Microsoft’s definition: render distance changes how many chunks the client draws, so it is the clearest first lever for a rendering bottleneck.

4. Keep simulation distance at or below render distance

  1. Set simulation distance to 4 chunks as the conservative baseline.
  2. Increase it only when you need mechanics to run farther from the player, and never above the current render distance.
  3. After each increase, check for frame-time changes and for server responsiveness in farms, villages and redstone-heavy areas.

Simulation distance can affect both the client and server. In multiplayer, a higher local value cannot override a server’s own limit.

5. Select a graphics mode

  1. Try Simple while establishing a stable baseline.
  2. Switch to Fancy if you have performance headroom and prefer additional visual detail.
  3. Use Ray Traced only when the supported Windows hardware and compatible resource-pack requirements are met; it is not a native Mac route.

6. Test Vibrant Visuals and effects separately

  1. With the cap and distances stable, enable Vibrant Visuals using Favor Performance.
  2. Test the same scene. If frame pacing or stability worsens, disable Vibrant Visuals rather than compensating by raising the cap.
  3. Lower particle effects next. If an anti-aliasing slider is present and the problem persists, reduce it one step and test again.
  4. Choose Favor Visuals only after the scene remains stable with the visual preset enabled.

7. Re-test in the mode you actually use

Single-player, a Realm and a dedicated server can behave differently. Test the final settings in the same type of world and with the same resource pack or visual preset you intend to keep. A setting that works in a new flat world may fail near a large base or a heavily populated area.

Single-player, Realms and servers: why your slider may not win

The effective render distance online is the lower of the client request and the server or Realm limit. If lowering your slider changes the view, the client is controlling the result. If raising it does nothing, the server-side limit may already be lower.

Simulation distance has an additional multiplayer consequence: it affects server work as well as client work. A world owner should avoid raising it everywhere without a reason, because distant ticking increases ongoing processing even when no player is looking at that area.

Ticking areas and world creators

Microsoft documents limits of up to 10 ticking areas per world and up to 100 chunks per ticking area. These areas continue processing mechanics and can add persistent cost. If a world remains slow after reasonable client settings, review whether ticking areas, farms or other always-active systems are creating server-side load. A player cannot fix that load solely by changing anti-aliasing or frame-rate caps.

Troubleshooting by symptom

FPS is low everywhere

  • Confirm the cap is not set above what the system can sustain.
  • Lower render distance first.
  • Set simulation distance to 4 and verify it is not above render distance.
  • Use Simple graphics, disable Vibrant Visuals and reduce particles.
  • Re-test before raising any setting.

FPS is high but movement still feels uneven

  • Use a cap instead of an uncapped setting.
  • Test a lower cap that the system can hold consistently.
  • Reduce render distance one step and compare frame pacing, not only the displayed average.
  • If you are streaming Bedrock to the Mac, separate game performance from network or video-stream delay; a graphics change cannot remove transport latency.

Farms, mobs or fluids update too slowly

  • Check simulation distance rather than render distance.
  • Raise simulation distance gradually, keeping it no higher than render distance and within the device’s available range.
  • In a Realm or server, ask the owner about the server-side limit.
  • If the world uses ticking areas, review them because always-active chunks can create server load independent of your view distance.

Changing render distance has no visible effect online

The Realm or server may impose a lower effective limit. Compare the same setting in a local world; if the local world responds but the online world does not, the remote limit is the likely explanation.

Vibrant Visuals causes crashes, instability or severe dips

Switch to Favor Performance or disable Vibrant Visuals, then retest with the same render distance. Microsoft identifies Vibrant Visuals as a comparatively high-effort feature at long distances, so lowering distance and effects together is more effective than increasing the frame-rate cap.

Ray tracing is unavailable

Microsoft’s ray-tracing documentation describes a Windows Bedrock path that requires compatible graphics hardware and a compatible resource pack. The official store’s macOS/Windows edition split means a native Mac setup is not the supported route for this feature. Use Fancy or Simple instead, or run the supported Windows configuration if you specifically need ray tracing.

A practical maintenance checklist

  • After a Bedrock update, revisit the Video menu because cap choices and visual options can change between builds.
  • Keep a note of your known-good cap, render distance and simulation distance so you can restore them quickly.
  • When installing a demanding resource pack or enabling Vibrant Visuals, test before increasing render distance.
  • For online play, treat the server or Realm limit as part of the configuration, not as a fault in your Mac.
  • If performance changes only in one world, investigate that world’s entity count, farms and ticking areas before lowering every visual setting globally.

Recommended order of priorities

  1. Platform: verify that the game is Bedrock on supported Windows hardware, rather than assuming a Mac app is native Bedrock.
  2. Consistency: choose a cap the system can sustain.
  3. Visible workload: adjust render distance, starting low and increasing gradually.
  4. Game simulation: keep simulation distance no higher than render distance and raise it only for a gameplay need.
  5. Effects: choose Simple or Fancy, then test Vibrant Visuals, particles and anti-aliasing individually.
  6. World and network: account for Realm/server limits and ticking areas before blaming the client.
