If RCS is unavailable, use your phone’s regular messaging app for SMS/MMS when your carrier plan supports it, or move the conversation to a third-party app that both people use. For private chats, check that end-to-end encryption applies to that specific conversation: SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted, and RCS encryption is not available in every carrier or app setup.
What happens when RCS is unavailable?
Your phone may fall back to SMS or MMS through your carrier, provided your plan supports text messaging. SMS/MMS can reach ordinary phone numbers, but it is not end-to-end encrypted. Apple describes SMS/MMS as an option when iMessage or RCS is not being used and explains the distinction in its Messages support guidance.
A third-party messaging app works differently: both participants generally need to use that service and have an internet connection. Installing Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, or Viber does not make it an SMS/RCS replacement for people who have not joined that app.
Best alternatives by what you need
| Need | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Text ordinary phone numbers | Your phone’s native messaging app with SMS/MMS | Requires carrier text-messaging support; SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. Apple support. |
| Private conversations with willing contacts | Signal | Both people must use Signal for private messages and calls. Signal no longer supports SMS/MMS in its Android app. Signal support. |
| Reach contacts who already use a cross-platform app | Useful when the people you want to reach are already there; it is app-to-app messaging, not universal SMS/RCS interoperability. The service comparison is an editorial assessment by Zapier. | |
| Multi-device use or large groups | Telegram | Zapier’s comparison identifies these as strengths, but says end-to-end encryption requires Secret Chats; ordinary Telegram chats should not be treated as end-to-end encrypted. Zapier comparison. |
| Message people already on Facebook | Messenger | A practical choice when the intended contacts use it; app availability and usefulness depend on your network. Zapier comparison. |
These are practical fits, not universal rankings. A comparative review notes that the best texting app often depends on which service your intended contacts use; availability and features can also vary by country and platform. Zapier’s comparison also discusses Viber among the alternatives.

How to choose without losing reach or privacy
- Need to reach almost any phone number? Keep SMS/MMS available in the native app, subject to your carrier plan. It is a reach-oriented fallback, not a private one.
- Want end-to-end encryption? Choose a service where the specific conversation is encrypted and confirm its status in the app. For Signal, both people need Signal.
- Choosing for a group? Start with the service most participants already use, then weigh group features and encryption settings. A feature-rich app is not useful if the intended group will not adopt it.
- Need both iPhone and Android users in one conversation? A third-party service with clients for both platforms can work if everyone joins. Do not confuse that with ordinary phone-number SMS/RCS interoperability.
Check whether an RCS conversation is actually encrypted
RCS features and encryption eligibility depend on software and provider support. Apple says RCS requires iOS 18 or later and a supporting provider; its newer encrypted RCS experience requires iOS 26.5 and a provider that supports encryption. Support from the other participants’ providers matters too. Apple says the lock and “Encrypted” label indicate that a conversation is protected. See Apple’s current Messages guidance.
Apple announced on May 11, 2026 that encrypted RCS would begin a beta rollout for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. The announcement described encryption as enabled by default while rolling out over time; it does not mean every iPhone–Android RCS chat is encrypted. Apple’s announcement and its support guidance both make eligibility conditional.

In Google Messages, Google says to look for a lock on the send button and an RCS chat banner. Its documented encryption pathway requires both participants to use the latest Google Messages with RCS enabled. Google also warns that changing messaging app or operating system can affect eligibility. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. Google Messages encryption guidance.
Messaging Apple users when RCS is missing
iMessage remains end-to-end encrypted between Apple devices, according to Apple. If the recipient’s conversation is not iMessage, check whether RCS is available and whether the app shows encryption. Otherwise, the native app may use SMS/MMS if the carrier plan supports it. Apple’s support page explains the available message types and their indicators: Messages on iPhone.

The deciding factor is often who will actually use the same service. A 2023 ACMA figure cited by Meta’s submission to Australia’s ACCC found that 73% of Australians used an average of four or more communication and social-media websites or apps in the first half of 2023, averaging 5.9 services. That is evidence that some users maintain multiple services—not a global messaging-app market-share figure or evidence about RCS fallback. Meta’s ACCC submission.
