For a large or multistory home with Wi-Fi dead zones, a mesh system can extend one shared network using a main router and additional nodes. The best choice depends less on the advertised coverage area or number of nodes than on your floor plan, walls, backhaul options, broadband speed, and devices. This guide explains how to choose; the available evidence does not support a fair, consistently tested ranking of current systems.

When mesh Wi-Fi is worth considering

A mesh system uses a main router and one or more nodes to carry the same network into areas a single router does not reliably reach. It can be useful across multiple floors or in a large home where rooms have weak or no service. If your existing router already covers the places you use Wi-Fi, adding mesh may bring cost and setup work without enough benefit. TechRadar’s overview of mesh Wi-Fi describes the same basic use: extending coverage around a home.

Before shopping, note which rooms and floors have problems, where the current router sits, and where a node could be placed. A node needs a usable connection back to the rest of the mesh; putting it in a dead zone does not necessarily solve the problem.

What to compare before buying

Backhaul: wired or wireless

Backhaul is the connection between mesh nodes. Ethernet backhaul can provide a stronger node-to-node link when cabling is available, but it requires running or using Ethernet at each node location. ASUS says, “A wired Ethernet connection will ensure the best performance but requires more work, as you might need to connect Ethernet cables to every node.” Wireless backhaul avoids that cabling, but its performance depends on the system, node placement, walls, and interference. ASUS explains the trade-offs in its whole-home mesh WiFi support guidance.

  • Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

Node count, placement, and home construction

Do not choose by node count or a square-footage claim alone. Wall and floor materials, interference, broadband service, client devices, and the connection between nodes all affect results. ASUS cautions that adding nodes does not always improve performance, and its guidance that ZenWiFi systems typically support a router and up to nine nodes for optimal wireless-backhaul performance is family-level guidance—not a recommendation for every model or home.

Coverage figures from different sources are not directly comparable. TP-Link Canada describes testing a Deco BE85 in a 4,600-square-foot, two-story, five-bedroom villa with drywall and 4×4 MLO-compatible clients. TP-Link also says results vary with the network, access type, interference, obstacles, walls, location, and clients. That figure describes the test setting; it is not a guaranteed coverage area for a buyer’s home. See TP-Link Canada’s product page and test qualification.

Similarly, eero lists coverage of up to 2,000 square feet per eero Pro 6E device. That is a manufacturer claim, not a measurement made under the same conditions as TP-Link’s villa test. Check eero’s product comparison for its stated features and coverage.

Wi-Fi generation, client devices, and Ethernet ports

Match the system to the devices and internet service you actually have. Newer Wi-Fi features help only when clients support them; a multi-gig Ethernet port matters only if the modem or broadband plan, router, and connected equipment can use that capacity. A combined theoretical Wi-Fi link rate is not a promise of the speed one device will receive, nor does it raise the speed of an internet connection beyond its limits.

The Deco BE85 is one premium Wi-Fi 7 example, rather than a claim that it is the best system for every large home. TP-Link’s UK product page describes a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh kit with two 10 Gbps WAN/LAN ports—one RJ45 and one RJ45/SFP+ combo—and optional Ethernet backhaul. TP-Link says compatible Wi-Fi 7 clients are required for MLO and 6 GHz benefits. These are manufacturer specifications, and regional hardware and bundle details can differ. What independent test results can—and cannot—tell you

Tom’s Guide reports testing mesh systems in a multistory home with brick walls. In that setup, it measured the Deco BE85 at 1.736 Gbps at 15 feet, 790.4 Mbps at 50 feet, 179.2 Mbps at 75 feet, and 42.6 Mbps at 90 feet. Those are results from that publication’s test arrangement, not expected speeds in every home. Distance alone does not account for differences in layout, construction, interference, client hardware, or backhaul. Tom’s Guide’s mesh Wi-Fi coverage provides the test context.

These distinct figures answer different questions: a vendor’s coverage claim or test setting describes its stated scenario, while a publication’s throughput measurements describe its own test setup. Neither substitutes for checking whether nodes can be placed effectively in your home.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Map the problem. Identify dead zones and the floors or rooms that need service. If the current router already works throughout the areas you use, you may not need mesh.
  2. Check for Ethernet. See whether cables reach likely node locations. If so, confirm the system supports wired backhaul and weigh its performance potential against the work of connecting nodes. If not, compare wireless-backhaul options and placement guidance.
  3. Match the kit to your layout. Consider floor construction, thick walls, interference, and realistic node locations. Treat advertised area as a qualified claim, not a guarantee.
  4. Match ports and Wi-Fi features to your equipment. Check Ethernet port rates against your broadband and wired devices, and confirm client compatibility before paying extra for newer Wi-Fi features.
  5. Verify the exact kit and total cost. Compare pack size, node count, backhaul support, bands, ports, support terms, and the current regional bundle. Prices, availability, and pack details vary and are not established here.
