There is no single best Markdown editor. Choose Typora or MarkText if you want Markdown to look like a document while you write; choose Visual Studio Code for documentation that lives in a software repository; choose Obsidian for a local, heavily linked knowledge base; choose Zettlr for citations and academic projects; and choose iA Writer for focused prose with minimal interface.

This comparison explains how each editor works, what it costs, where it runs, and which workflow it fits. Prices and service plans are those listed by the vendors at the time of writing; Obsidian’s subscription prices in particular can change.

Quick comparison

Editor Best fit Editing model Notable capabilities Platforms Cost model
Typora Beginners who want a visual, single-document surface Inline rendering; Markdown symbols and a separate preview are hidden while you type Tables, images, code fences, mathematics, diagrams, task lists, outline, focus and typewriter modes, broad export macOS, Windows, Linux 15-day trial; $14.99 before tax, one-time desktop purchase listed by the vendor
MarkText A free visual starting point Realtime WYSIWYG-style preview CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, selective Pandoc support, KaTeX, front matter, focus and typewriter modes, HTML/PDF output Linux, macOS, Windows Open source under the MIT license
Visual Studio Code Developers and documentation stored with code Source editor with toggleable or side-by-side preview; an experimental rendered editor is also documented Local link validation, automatic link updates when files move, Mermaid, KaTeX, smart selection Not stated in the supplied product details Pricing not stated in the supplied product details
Obsidian Linked local notes and personal knowledge bases Markdown notes with a linked-note and plugin-oriented workspace Backlinks, graph-oriented organization, plugins, optional Sync and Publish; local storage and no telemetry stated by the vendor Not stated in the supplied pricing details Core app free without limits and no sign-up; Sync and Publish are optional subscriptions
Zettlr Academic and citation-heavy projects Source and split-view editing Zotero integration, BibTeX/JSON citations, citation preview, projects, statistics, full-text search, graph view, Pandoc export Not stated in the supplied comparison details Open source
iA Writer Distraction-free prose Plain-text Markdown with a deliberately minimal interface Focus Mode, Style Check, HTML/PDF/Word export, cross-device apps Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad Seven-day trial; purchase terms not stated in the supplied product details

The table is a workflow map, not a quality ranking. An editor can be excellent for one job and awkward for another: a repository-aware tool is not automatically the best place for a personal journal, and a beautiful writing surface is not automatically suitable for resolving links in a documentation tree.

What matters when choosing a Markdown editor

How much Markdown should you see?

Markdown editors sit on a spectrum. A source-first editor shows characters such as #, backticks, brackets and asterisks directly. A split editor keeps source on one side and a rendered preview on the other. An inline or visual editor renders most formatting in place, so the page resembles the final document while you type.

Visual rendering lowers the initial learning curve because a new user can concentrate on headings, lists and links rather than memorising punctuation. Source view remains valuable when you need to inspect exact syntax, resolve a malformed link, edit front matter or review a change in a code repository. Before choosing, decide whether you will spend more time composing prose or maintaining the underlying files.

Where will the files live?

For documentation, the folder structure is part of the product. You may need relative links between pages, images beside a page, diagrams, and predictable behaviour when files are renamed. A personal knowledge base has a different requirement: fast backlinks, tags or plugins, and a way to discover related notes. A writing app may prioritise a quiet canvas and export rather than either kind of navigation.

Do you need citations or a publishing pipeline?

Academic work often involves a bibliography database, citation keys, project-level organisation and an export path such as Pandoc. General writing may need only HTML, PDF or Word output. Check these requirements before falling for an attractive preview: adding citation tooling later can be more disruptive than accepting a less decorative interface at the start.

What are your privacy and cost constraints?

Markdown files are portable plain text, but synchronization and publishing can introduce hosted services. Obsidian states that notes remain local, its apps do not collect telemetry, and its Sync service uses AES-256 end-to-end encryption. Its core app is free; Sync and Publish are separate paid options. MarkText and Zettlr are open source, while Typora is a paid one-time desktop product. iA Writer offers a trial and sells apps, but the supplied product details do not state the purchase prices.

Typora: best for beginners who want visual editing

Typora is the strongest fit when you want to learn Markdown without staring at its punctuation. The editor removes a separate preview window and Markdown syntax symbols from the normal writing surface, presenting a seamless reader-and-writer experience. Headings, emphasis, lists and other elements render inline as you work.

What you can do

  • Build tables, task lists and nested content without switching to a second pane.
  • Insert images, fenced code, mathematics and diagrams.
  • Use outline navigation to move through a long document.
  • Enable focus or typewriter modes when you want the current writing area to dominate the screen.
  • Import or export through formats listed by the vendor, including PDF, DOCX, LaTeX, MediaWiki and EPUB.

That combination makes Typora approachable for a first Markdown file and useful for documents that must eventually become a PDF, Word file or e-book. It is still a file-based Markdown editor, so you retain the portability of plain text rather than being locked into a proprietary document format.

Price, trial and platforms

Typora’s product page lists a 15-day trial and a price of $14.99 before tax. That is presented as a one-time desktop purchase rather than a recurring subscription. Downloads are listed for macOS, Windows and Linux. Taxes, regional pricing and future changes are not specified here, so confirm the amount at checkout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where Typora is less suitable

Typora’s single-document surface is intentionally calm, not a full repository-management environment. If your main task is validating links across dozens of documentation files, reviewing changes beside source code or coordinating a team workflow, Visual Studio Code provides more directly documented tooling. If your work depends on a large citation database, Zettlr has the clearer documented citation workflow.

MarkText: the best free visual starting point

MarkText is an open-source editor for Linux, macOS and Windows. Its repository documents realtime WYSIWYG preview, so it offers the visual experience many beginners want without the listed purchase price of Typora.

Markdown and publishing features

  • CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown support cover the dialects most readers encounter in software and web documentation.
  • Selective Pandoc support provides an additional route to conversion when the built-in output is not enough.
  • KaTeX handles mathematical notation.
  • Front matter is available for documents that need metadata at the top of a file.
  • HTML and PDF output are documented, along with focus and typewriter modes.

The MIT license matters if you value an open-source tool that can be examined, shared and incorporated under permissive terms. MarkText is a particularly sensible first installation when you want inline rendering, cross-platform availability and no recurring service requirement.

Trade-offs

MarkText’s visual approach is excellent for composing and reviewing one document, but the supplied feature description does not establish repository link validation, automatic updates after file moves, or a dedicated citation manager. Those omissions do not make it a poor editor; they simply mean that developers with large documentation trees and researchers with bibliographies should compare it against VS Code or Zettlr before standardising on it.

Visual Studio Code: best for developers and repository documentation

Visual Studio Code supports Markdown files out of the box. Its advantage is not a special writing mode but the way Markdown sits beside the rest of a software project. You can edit a page, inspect its source, preview the rendered result and maintain the links that connect it to other files.

Features that matter in a repository

  • Toggleable or side-by-side previews update as you edit.
  • Local link validation helps identify broken references in documentation.
  • Automatic link updates when files move reduce the chance of silently breaking a relative link during a reorganisation.
  • Mermaid diagrams support diagram-based explanations inside Markdown.
  • KaTeX support covers mathematical notation.
  • Smart selection makes it easier to select progressively larger Markdown structures.
  • An experimental rendered Markdown editor is documented for users who want a more visual editing surface.

This set of capabilities directly answers the maintenance problems that arise when README files, guides and API notes are versioned with source code. The repository remains the source of truth, and the editor can show both the syntax a reviewer will commit and the rendered page a reader will see.

When VS Code is overkill

If you want to sit down and write an essay with no project tree, extensions or source-code context, VS Code can feel busier than Typora, MarkText or iA Writer. Its value appears when file relationships, diagrams, mathematical notation and code-adjacent work matter more than a distraction-free canvas.

Obsidian: best for linked local notes

Obsidian is designed around a folder of Markdown notes that can be connected through backlinks and graph-oriented organisation. It is a strong choice when the unit of work is not one finished document but a growing body of ideas: research notes, meeting records, reference pages and drafts that should point to one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage, privacy and the free core

Obsidian’s pricing and FAQ pages state that the core app is “Free without limits” and requires no sign-up. The vendor says notes are stored locally and that its apps do not collect telemetry. Those statements make the free core attractive to readers who want ownership of ordinary Markdown files and do not want a mandatory account.

Optional Sync and Publish

Service Price listed by Obsidian What it is for
Sync $4 per user per month when billed annually, or $5 monthly Synchronising an Obsidian vault across devices
Publish $8 per site per month when billed annually, or $10 monthly Publishing selected notes as a website

Obsidian states that Sync uses AES-256 end-to-end encryption. The prices above are recurring service prices, not requirements for using the core application, and they are volatile enough to verify before subscribing.

Who should choose it?

Choose Obsidian when backlinks, graph views, plugins and optional publishing are central to your workflow. Do not choose it merely because it is free if your real need is a quiet, single-document writing surface or citation-first project management. Those jobs are addressed more directly by iA Writer and Zettlr.

Zettlr: best for academic and citation-heavy work

Zettlr’s documented feature set is the clearest match for researchers who need Markdown writing connected to references and projects. It is open source and combines a writing environment with tools for finding, organising and exporting a substantial body of work.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Citation and project features

  • Zotero integration connects the editor to a reference manager.
  • BibTeX and JSON citations support common bibliography workflows.
  • Citation preview lets you inspect references while writing.
  • Project support keeps related files together.
  • Writing statistics help monitor document progress.
  • Full-text search finds terms across a collection rather than only in the open file.
  • Split view, code highlighting and graph view support both close editing and broader navigation.
  • Export uses formats supported through Pandoc.

This is a better starting point than a general visual editor when your final deliverable depends on a bibliography, repeatable project structure and conversion to several publication formats. The trade-off is a denser interface and more setup than a beginner needs for a shopping list or a short note.

iA Writer: best for distraction-free prose

iA Writer treats Markdown as a plain-text writing method and keeps the interface deliberately minimal. Its Focus Mode highlights the current sentence or paragraph, helping you edit one thought at a time instead of constantly adjusting layout. Style Check flags clichés and clutter so revision can happen without leaving the document.

Export and device coverage

The product page lists export to HTML, PDF and Word. Apps are available for Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad, making it the most explicitly Apple-inclusive option in this comparison while still offering a Windows version.

iA Writer says it has a 15-year launch history and has served more than two million writers. Those are vendor-stated figures, not an independent usage survey. The product page also offers a seven-day trial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use case and limitation

Pick iA Writer when the important outcome is clear prose and a portable Markdown file, not backlinks, repository diagnostics or bibliography management. Its restraint is the point: writers who need a graph, project dashboard or advanced citation tooling should use a more specialised editor.

Best editor by reader type

For a beginner learning Markdown

Start with MarkText if free and open source are priorities. Start with Typora if you want the most polished inline experience and are comfortable with the vendor’s listed $14.99 one-time price after the trial. Both reduce the need to memorise syntax while preserving Markdown files.

For a developer

Use Visual Studio Code when Markdown lives in a Git repository or beside source code. Its documented preview, link validation, link updates after file moves, Mermaid and KaTeX support address maintenance as well as composition. A visual editor is still useful for isolated documentation, but repository-aware behaviour should decide the default tool.

For a novelist, essayist or content writer

Choose iA Writer for the quietest prose-focused environment. Choose Typora when you need a visual page plus richer document elements and export formats. MarkText is the free cross-platform alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a researcher or student

Choose Zettlr when citations, Zotero, bibliography formats, project organisation and Pandoc export are central. Obsidian can work for research notes and linked ideas, but its documented strengths are knowledge management and optional publishing rather than citation preview.

For a personal knowledge base

Choose Obsidian when backlinks, graph organisation and plugins matter. Keep the free local core if you do not need cross-device Sync or a hosted site; add those services only when their recurring prices and features fit your workflow.

A practical way to test two editors

Use the same small folder and the same document in each candidate. This avoids judging one editor on a simple note and another on a complex project.

  1. Create a Markdown file containing a heading hierarchy, a checklist, a table, an image reference, a code fence, a mathematical expression and a link to another local file.
  2. Open the file in each editor and switch between its source and rendered views, if both are available. Check whether you can tell what will be committed or exported without hunting for hidden syntax.
  3. Move the linked file into a subfolder. In Visual Studio Code, observe the documented local-link validation and automatic link-update behaviour; in other editors, verify links manually.
  4. Add several related notes or project files. Test whether navigation, search, backlinks or graph views match the way you actually work.
  5. For academic writing, insert a citation and export through your intended Pandoc or document workflow. For prose, export to the format your publisher or collaborator requires.
  6. Repeat the test after closing and reopening the application. Confirm that the files remain ordinary Markdown in the location you expect and that any optional sync or publishing service is clearly separated from local storage.

The result should be a decision based on friction in your own workflow, not on which feature list looks longest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost, licensing and portability

Editor License or pricing information stated by the vendor What to budget for
Typora 15-day trial; $14.99 before tax One-time desktop purchase listed on the product page; taxes and regional terms may vary
MarkText MIT-licensed open source No product subscription listed
Visual Studio Code Pricing not stated in the supplied product details Confirm current terms if your organisation has separate software policies
Obsidian Core free without limits and no sign-up; Sync $4 annually billed monthly equivalent or $5 monthly; Publish $8 annually billed monthly equivalent or $10 monthly Only Sync and Publish create the listed recurring charges
Zettlr Open source No product subscription listed
iA Writer Seven-day trial; purchase price not stated in the supplied product details Check the current price for your operating system

Markdown’s plain-text foundation is the portability advantage shared by all six editors. Portability does not guarantee identical rendering: CommonMark, GitHub Flavored Markdown, Pandoc extensions, diagrams, math and front matter can differ. If a file will be published elsewhere, preview it in the target system and keep any required assets and metadata with the document.

Common pitfalls

  • Choosing by appearance alone: A beautiful inline preview may not validate links, manage citations or understand your repository. Match the editor to the work before the interface.
  • Confusing local files with a hosted service: Obsidian’s core app is local and free, while Sync and Publish are optional subscriptions. Decide whether you need either service.
  • Assuming every Markdown dialect is identical: A document using GitHub Flavored Markdown, KaTeX, Mermaid or Pandoc features may render differently in another application.
  • Ignoring export requirements: If collaborators need DOCX, PDF, HTML, LaTeX or EPUB, test that route before writing a large project. Typora, iA Writer and Zettlr document different export sets.
  • Overbuilding a simple writing workflow: A knowledge graph or project dashboard adds value only when you will use it. For uninterrupted prose, iA Writer’s minimalism or Typora’s single-document view may be more productive.
  • Underestimating repository maintenance: In a documentation tree, a broken relative link can be more damaging than an imperfect preview. VS Code’s documented link checks and move updates target that risk directly.

Final decision guide

Pick Typora for the most approachable paid visual editor, MarkText for a free MIT-licensed visual start, Visual Studio Code for Markdown that ships with code, Obsidian for linked local notes and optional publishing, Zettlr for citations and research projects, and iA Writer for concentrated prose. If two descriptions fit, use the practical test with your own files and let link maintenance, citations, export and distraction level break the tie.
