Use a layered scan, not a single app. Update your installed antivirus and run a full scan first. If you suspect persistence, rootkit behavior, or a compromised Windows shell, run Microsoft Defender Offline. After Windows restarts, run a current on-demand second-opinion scanner such as Malwarebytes or ESET. A clean quick scan cannot prove that a remote-access trojan (RAT) is absent.

What a RAT is—and why a normal scan can miss it

A remote-access trojan is malware that gives an attacker unauthorized control of a computer. Microsoft’s descriptions of trojans, backdoors, and evasion software explain the risk: a trojan can install additional malware, record keystrokes and websites visited, send device information to an attacker, and provide remote control; a backdoor specifically enables malicious remote access; and evasion software actively attempts to avoid security products.

That combination changes how you should interpret scan results. A quick scan checks a limited set of locations and may run while Windows, the shell, services, and the malicious process are all active. A RAT can use persistence mechanisms, inject into legitimate processes, hide files, or interfere with security software. Therefore, “no threats found” from one quick scan means only that the scanner did not identify a threat in the areas and conditions it checked.

RAT detection is also not a single, universal capability. Security products use signatures, cloud reputation, behavior monitoring, memory and boot checks, and remediation rules. A sample that evades one engine may be detected by another, while a legitimate administration tool can trigger a false alarm. The practical objective is to change the scanning conditions and use independent engines rather than to search for a product that can guarantee detection of every RAT family.

The safest order of operations

Follow this sequence on a Windows PC when a RAT is possible. It keeps the resident protection active, then adds a scan that runs outside the ordinary Windows environment, and finally obtains an independent opinion.

  1. Disconnect the suspected computer from networks if unauthorized access is active. Unplug Ethernet and disable Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth as appropriate. This limits an attacker’s live control while you scan. If you need to download a scanner, use a separate known-clean device and transfer only the installer or required media.
  2. Change important passwords from a known-clean device. Prioritize email, password-manager, financial, work, and administrator accounts. Do not enter new credentials on the suspected computer until it has been assessed. Microsoft and CISA guidance treat suspected remote access as an incident, not merely a routine virus scan.
  3. Update the resident antivirus. Install the latest engine and definitions, then run a full scan rather than a quick scan. Microsoft lists Defender Antivirus and Microsoft Safety Scanner among tools that can detect and remove trojans.
  4. Run Microsoft Defender Offline when persistence is plausible. This is the key pre-boot step. It restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans before ordinary Windows components load.
  5. Review the result after Windows starts. Open Windows Security and check Protection history for the Offline scan result, quarantine action, and any item requiring a restart or manual decision.
  6. Run a second-opinion, on-demand scanner. Update Malwarebytes or ESET immediately before scanning, then perform the deepest scan the product offers. Keep only one real-time antivirus engine enabled; an on-demand scanner can be used alongside the resident product without replacing it.
  7. Escalate if control or persistence remains unexplained. Continue using the machine offline, preserve relevant alerts and timestamps, and follow CISA’s remote-access security guidance. For a business device, involve the administrator or incident-response team rather than repeatedly logging in and deleting files.

Microsoft Defender Offline: when and how to use it

Why the offline mode matters

Microsoft states that the scan runs “from outside the normal Windows kernel so it can target malware that attempts to bypass the Windows shell.” Microsoft Support further explains that the scan occurs after a restart, without loading Windows, so persistent malware has a more difficult time hiding or defending itself. A RAT that depends on a running service, shell extension, user-mode process, or security-software interference loses some of those advantages when the normal operating system is not loaded.

Starting the scan from Windows

  1. Save open work and close applications. The Offline scan will restart the computer.
  2. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, then open Scan options.
  3. Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now. Approve the restart when prompted.
  4. Allow the recovery-environment scan to finish. Do not force a shutdown while it is running.
  5. After Windows loads, return to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and record what was detected, quarantined, or blocked.

The exact labels can vary slightly by Windows edition or organizational policy. If the Offline option is unavailable, an administrator may have disabled it, the security service may be damaged, or the device may require recovery media.

  • FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.

Creating removable Offline media

Microsoft’s instructions specify a blank CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with at least 250 MB of free space for creating Defender Offline media. Creating the media can reformat the drive, so copy its contents to another location first. An 8 GB USB flash drive is a practical search phrase when buying inexpensive media, but capacity alone does not guarantee that a particular computer will boot from it. Firmware settings, Secure Boot support, USB boot options, and the drive’s compatibility still matter.

Use removable media when Windows will not start, the built-in Offline option fails, or you need to scan a system before its installed operating system can execute. Create the media on a known-clean computer, keep it dedicated to recovery work, and reconnect the suspect PC only as required to obtain scan updates.

Independent results: useful context, not a RAT leaderboard

AV-Comparatives’ Malware Protection Test 2026 reports separate offline detection, online detection, online protection, and false-alarm measures. The figures below are general malware-protection results from that report, not a test of RAT families alone. They can help you understand how products behaved under the report’s conditions, but they cannot establish that one product will detect every RAT that another misses.

Product Offline detection Online protection What the number means
F-Secure 98.6% 99.98% AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test 2026 result; general malware, not RAT-only.
Bitdefender 97.6% 99.94% AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test 2026 result; general malware, not RAT-only.
ESET 96.4% 99.93% AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test 2026 result; general malware, not RAT-only.
Malwarebytes 92.4% 99.59% AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test 2026 result; general malware, not RAT-only.
Microsoft 89.2% 99.93% AV-Comparatives Malware Protection Test 2026 result; general malware, not RAT-only.

The test also measures false alarms, but the individual false-alarm values are not established in the cited material here. Do not infer that a higher offline percentage means fewer false positives, better remediation, or superior protection in every phase. Offline detection describes samples presented without the product’s normal online lookups; online protection includes cloud and network-assisted decisions. Those are different operating conditions.

Malwarebytes or ESET as a second opinion?

Both are reasonable on-demand choices after the resident antivirus and Defender Offline scans are current. In the AV-Comparatives 2026 figures, ESET recorded 96.4% offline detection and 99.93% online protection, while Malwarebytes recorded 92.4% offline detection and 99.59% online protection. Those results favor ESET in that particular general-malware test, but they do not answer the narrower question of which product will find a specific RAT on your computer.

Choose based on the role you need:

  • Choose ESET for a second opinion when offline results and broad conventional-malware coverage are your priority. Its reported figures were higher in both listed measures, subject to the test’s methodology and sample set.
  • Choose Malwarebytes when you want a separate, on-demand engine to run after the resident antivirus. Its value is independence from the first engine, not a guarantee that it will detect a RAT missed by every other scanner.
  • Use both sequentially only if the computer can remain stable and offline. Update one, scan, record the result, then update and scan with the other. Do not run two products’ real-time protection simultaneously.

If either scanner detects a file, service, scheduled task, or registry entry, quarantine it and restart only when the product requests it. Record the detection name and path before deleting anything; those details help an administrator determine whether the item was a legitimate remote-management component or an intrusion.

How to select a scanner for a suspected RAT

Use these criteria instead of ranking products by one headline percentage.

Criterion Why it matters Questions to ask
Offline or pre-boot capability Malware has fewer opportunities to hide when the normal Windows kernel and shell are not running. Can it create or use recovery media? Does it scan before Windows loads?
On-demand second-opinion use A different engine can recognize a sample, behavior, or potentially unwanted component the resident product did not flag. Can real-time protection be left disabled while the scanner runs on demand?
Behavioral and cloud protection RATs may change files or commands faster than signatures can be published. Does the product inspect behavior and use current cloud reputation when online?
False alarms Remote-administration tools and scripts can resemble attacker tooling. Does the test publish false-alarm results, and can you review the path and publisher before removing an item?
Operating-system support A scanner cannot help if it does not support the affected Windows edition or recovery environment. Does the vendor document support for your edition and architecture?
Update requirements Old definitions reduce the chance of recognizing current samples and indicators. When was the engine last updated, and can updates be obtained on a clean device?
Scanning while Windows is not fully running Pre-boot scanning is valuable when persistence or shell compromise is suspected. Is there a documented Offline, rescue, or bootable mode?

The cited AV-Comparatives report provides the four measurement categories described above, but the supplied results do not establish every product’s operating-system support, update schedule, or individual false-alarm score. Verify those details for your specific edition before relying on a scanner in an incident.

What to do if a scanner finds a RAT

Contain first

Keep the machine disconnected from networks. Do not continue banking, signing in to work systems, or accessing a password manager from it. From a known-clean device, change credentials that may have been captured and enable stronger authentication where available.

Document the finding

Save the detection name, file path, timestamp, scanner version, and action taken. If the alert identifies a startup entry, service, scheduled task, or remote-access account, include that information in the incident record. Do not restore a quarantined item merely to see what it does.

Scan again after remediation

Follow the product’s restart instruction, then run another full scan. If the same item returns, a second component may be restoring it, or the account, service, or boot configuration may still be compromised. Run Defender Offline again and obtain professional or organizational incident-response help rather than repeatedly deleting isolated files.

Rebuild when trust cannot be restored

A successful quarantine does not prove that an attacker did not read credentials or alter other data. If unauthorized remote access is confirmed and persistence cannot be confidently removed, use your organization’s recovery procedure or reinstall from trusted media, restore only known-clean data, patch the system, and rotate credentials again.

Common mistakes that reduce detection

  • Stopping after a quick scan: it checks less of the system and runs under the same Windows environment a RAT may be controlling.
  • Running outdated definitions: an old engine cannot make current reputation or signature decisions reliably.
  • Installing multiple real-time antiviruses: they can conflict, reduce performance, and obscure which engine made a decision.
  • Reconnecting immediately after a detection: this gives an attacker another opportunity to control the machine or steal newly entered credentials.
  • Deleting a suspicious file without recording its context: the path, publisher, service, or scheduled task may be essential to determine the scope of compromise.
  • Assuming a high laboratory score equals certainty: AV-Comparatives’ 2026 numbers cover general malware under defined test phases, not every RAT variant in the wild.
  • Using an unprepared USB drive: Defender Offline media can reformat the drive, and an 8 GB capacity label does not ensure that the target computer can boot from it.

Bottom line for a RAT concern

Start with an updated full scan, then use Microsoft Defender Offline when persistence, rootkit behavior, or shell compromise is possible. Follow with a current second-opinion scanner such as ESET or Malwarebytes. ESET’s 2026 general-malware results were higher than Malwarebytes’ in the cited offline and online measures, but neither result is a RAT-specific guarantee. Treat any suspected unauthorized remote access as a security incident: isolate the computer, change credentials from a clean device, review Protection history and scanner logs, and escalate when the system’s trust cannot be restored.
