The best craft livestream is one viewers can follow: choose a project that reads clearly on camera, tell people what they need before it starts, and build in pauses for questions. Good formats include a beginner make-along, a single-technique lesson, a work-in-progress session, audience-directed design choices, a recurring studio hour, and a finished-object show-and-tell.
Choose a format that fits the craft
Match the project to its visible steps, the camera distance it needs, and how often you can stop to talk. A small bead project, pottery demonstration, and children’s weaving workshop will not need identical framing or pacing. The Crafts Council’s craft-streaming guide emphasizes adapting the setup to the activity.

These are adaptable formats, not promises of audience growth or sales. To choose, consider project duration and visible progress, difficulty for a first-time participant, how easily viewers can source materials, how close the camera must be, and how much time you can give to chat.
Prepare the workspace and camera
- Make room for the work. Choose a location with enough space and light to show the project comfortably.
- Check the view before going live. Confirm the camera captures your hands and the details viewers need to see. For fine work, test a close view; for a larger demonstration, make sure the full working area remains visible.
- Stabilize the camera. Use a tripod if possible so the framing stays steady while your hands are occupied.
- Test the connection, camera, and audio. A private test broadcast with a friend is one way to check that the image and sound work before the event.
- Arrange tools within reach. Set out materials in the order you expect to use them, so you do not have to leave the frame repeatedly.
Tell viewers what to bring and how to participate
- Choose the project and skill level. Prefer a manageable object or technique that you can demonstrate clearly in the available time.
- Publish a materials list with the event announcement. Name the tools and materials viewers need, and note any useful substitutes when appropriate.
- Show the supplies at the beginning. Give viewers a moment to check that they have what they need before starting the first step.
- Plan pauses for chat. Decide where you can stop naturally to answer questions without losing the thread of the demonstration.
- Ask for help if it is available. An off-camera helper can watch comments while you work, leaving you more attention for the craft.
- For a recurring session, keep the schedule consistent. Promote the next session and upload the replay so people who missed the live event can still follow along.
Keep the stream focused and safe
Avoid background music unless you have cleared the necessary rights. YouTube’s rules for product tagging also require that live content’s rights be owned or cleared in that context. Do not assume that music or other material is permitted simply because it is playing in the background.
