For a modest 24/7 YouTube stream, start with a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, its recommended 5 V/3 A USB-C power supply, microSD boot media and wired Ethernet where practical. Pi 4’s hardware H.264 encoder can suit workflows that encode a live source. If you are looping an already encoded video, try passing its video and audio through without re-encoding. A Raspberry Pi 5 is another option, but its H.264 encoding is software-based; Raspberry Pi’s 2026 paper reports real-time 1080p30 only under the paper’s tested settings. Neither board’s published figures establish the power use or reliability of a complete 24/7 setup.

Which Raspberry Pi is best for a 24/7 YouTube stream?

For a low-power build that needs to encode a live camera or scene, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the sensible starting point when your software pipeline can use its hardware H.264 encoder. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation says its libav backend uses hardware H.264 encoding where available.

Pi 5 may suit a workload that benefits from more CPU capacity or a newer platform. It does not have a hardware H.264 encoder: Raspberry Pi’s 2026 performance paper reports real-time 1080p30 software encoding under the settings tested in that paper. That result is not a guarantee for every preset, bitrate, cooling arrangement or simultaneous workload.

Model Encoding path When it makes sense Considerations
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Hardware H.264 is available in supported camera/libav workflows. A modest live H.264 stream where keeping encoding CPU use low matters. Choose a conservative resolution and frame rate, then test the exact software and workload.
Raspberry Pi 5 Software H.264 encoding; Raspberry Pi’s 2026 paper tested real-time 1080p30 under its stated settings. A build that benefits from CPU headroom and has validated encoding settings. Software encoding uses CPU resources. Provide suitable power and cooling, and test sustained operation.

For either model, the right choice depends on whether your input is a live source that must be encoded or a pre-encoded file that can be sent through without another encode. A board’s published consumption is not the same as the wall draw of the board, storage, network equipment and any attached peripherals together.

Decide whether you need to encode the video

Live camera or scene

A live camera or scene must be encoded for delivery to YouTube. Use a supported capture and encoding pipeline; on Pi 4, check that it is actually using the hardware H.264 path rather than assuming that any application will do so. Pi 5 encodes H.264 in software, so validate CPU load, temperature and dropped frames at your chosen settings.

Already encoded video loop

If the source is already encoded in a format and settings YouTube accepts, investigate stream-copy or remuxing rather than decoding and encoding it again. This avoids an unnecessary encode, but it does not guarantee that every file can be sent as-is: check its codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio and container, and confirm the resulting stream is accepted. Use a media pipeline that can repeat the file and reconnect after an interruption.

Do not treat a looping file as a live camera feed. YouTube policies, copyright permissions and monetization eligibility are separate from the technical ability to send a stream. Make sure you have the rights to the video and audio, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization rules for your channel and content.

Build the Raspberry Pi setup

  1. Choose the board. Use a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B as the default for a modest live H.264 pipeline that can use hardware encoding. Choose Pi 5 only after validating the software-encoding settings and sustained workload you intend to run.
  2. Use the model-matched supply. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 3 A (15 W) USB-C supply for Pi 4. Its Pi 5 documentation recommends the 27 W official USB-C supply and describes 5 V at 5 A as necessary for full peripheral capability. Cable voltage loss and attached devices can affect what reaches the board; do not size a supply from the board alone. Raspberry Pi says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply.”
  3. Provide boot storage. Install a minimal Raspberry Pi OS or other suitable Linux system on a microSD card. USB storage is also supported, but the board does not include onboard storage.
  4. Connect the network. Prefer Ethernet for a fixed installation when practical. Provide more upstream capacity than the configured stream bitrate and check stability over time; a short speed test alone does not establish reliable continuous upload performance. Internet performance varies by location and provider, and no particular Indian ISP performance is established here.
  5. Install and supervise the streaming workflow. Use FFmpeg/libav or a suitable camera pipeline. Configure it to start after boot and to restart after a process failure, and rehearse recovery after both a network interruption and a power interruption. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid can use libav to save or stream media; exact setup depends on the chosen source and software.
  6. Measure the assembled system. Use a wall meter with the board, storage and any other equipment in the configuration you plan to run. If a router or modem must stay online during an outage, include it in the measurement and in any backup-power plan.

Set YouTube’s stream parameters

YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance lists H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, its recommended examples are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not evidence that a particular Raspberry Pi, encoder configuration or internet connection can sustain them.

Output example YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate Keyframe interval
1080p30 5 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
720p30 3 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

Use the YouTube Studio live-control room to create or schedule the live stream and select its encoder settings. In your encoder, select H.264, CBR, the matching resolution and frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for your stream into the encoder’s destination fields; the exact labels vary by software. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a public command or share it with anyone who should not be able to stream to your channel.

Begin with a modest output such as 720p30 if the Pi or upstream connection is unproven. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, encoder CPU load, temperature and dropped frames before relying on the configuration. Increase output only after the full setup has run steadily under its intended workload.

Estimate electricity cost in India from a wall measurement

Raspberry Pi documentation lists approximate typical active current of 600 mA for a bare Pi 4 Model B. The documentation cautions that additional USB devices and HATs can raise system use. That reference is not a measurement of a streaming setup at the wall, and it should not be used as a direct monthly bill estimate.

Measure average watts for the complete setup, then calculate:

Multiply the result by the electricity tariff that applies to your household. Indian tariffs differ by state, distribution company and consumption slab, so there is no single defensible rupee estimate without your measured watts and applicable bill rate.

Plan for outages without assuming uninterrupted service

A process supervisor can restart a failed streaming process, but it cannot restore a failed power supply, broken network connection or unavailable YouTube ingest path by itself. Test how the setup behaves after deliberately disconnecting the network and after a power interruption. Confirm that the Pi boots, the stream process starts, and the stream returns in the way your channel needs.

UPS runtime depends on the measured load, battery, inverter efficiency and which network equipment is backed up. Measure the complete load, include the router or modem if required, then select a UPS for the outage window you need. No particular UPS capacity or runtime is established for this build in India; do not describe it as uninterruptible without testing the actual arrangement.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube never receives the stream: Check that the stream is active in YouTube Studio, the selected server URL and stream key match that stream, and the encoder is using RTMPS or the intended supported ingest protocol. Regenerate and replace a key if it may have been exposed.
  • Frequent dropped frames or a disconnect: Check wired or wireless network stability and available upstream capacity against the stream bitrate. Reduce resolution or bitrate while diagnosing; a nominal connection speed does not prove stable sustained upload.
  • Pi 5 struggles while encoding: Check CPU load, temperature, preset and workload. Lower the output settings or test a less demanding configuration; real-time 1080p30 in Raspberry Pi’s 2026 paper applies to that paper’s test conditions.
  • Pi 4 does not show the expected low encoding load: Verify that the capture pipeline supports and is using the hardware H.264 encoder. Hardware encoding availability in a documented libav workflow does not mean every application automatically selects it.
  • A looped file stutters or is rejected: Verify the file’s codecs and stream parameters, and test whether the chosen pipeline can loop it while copying or remuxing. If the source cannot be passed through acceptably, a re-encode may be required and adds workload.
  • The stream does not return after a reboot: Check boot startup and process-supervisor configuration, then rehearse a cold boot and network recovery. A successful manual start does not confirm automatic recovery.
  • The setup browns out or resets under load: Check that the supply matches the board and peripherals, inspect cable quality and voltage loss, and account for attached devices. The recommended supply ratings are not measurements of the complete system’s consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Raspberry Pi stream to YouTube 24/7?

Yes, if the complete setup, network and recovery behavior are configured and tested for continuous operation. A board specification alone does not establish 24/7 reliability.

How much power does a Raspberry Pi use running all day?

The Pi 4 documentation lists approximately 600 mA typical active current for the bare board, but measure the assembled system at the wall to estimate its energy use and cost.
