To cool a room without central air, first block direct sun and cut indoor heat from cooking. Open windows only when outdoor air is cooler, clean enough, and safe to let in. Fans can make you feel cooler but do not lower room temperature; the CDC advises using indoor fans only below 90°F. Evaporative coolers are an option mainly in dry climates, where added humidity is less of a problem.

Start with free ways to keep heat out

Block direct sunlight

Close available shades or window coverings where sunlight is shining into the room. Limiting solar heat gain can reduce the room’s cooling needs, though the guidance cited here does not establish a universal temperature reduction for shades or reflective coverings. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends shading as part of home cooling, and Washington State Department of Health guidance includes pulling window shades.

Make less heat indoors

Use the stove and oven less during hot periods; cooking indoors adds heat to the room. The CDC recommends reducing stove and oven use for people without air conditioning. See the CDC’s advice for staying cool without AC.

Ventilate only when conditions favor it

Opening windows can help when outdoor air is cooler than the room and safe to admit. It can make conditions worse if outside air is hotter or polluted, or if opening a window creates a fall or other health risk. The Department of Energy notes that ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates. Its home-cooling guidance explains the limits; the CDC also advises against opening windows or doors when doing so risks falls or triggers health problems.

Choose equipment based on what it can actually do

Option Effect Conditions and trade-offs
Room or window fan Moves air and can improve personal comfort; does not make the room’s air colder. CDC advises using indoor fans only below 90°F. A window fan used to exhaust air needs a replacement-air path, such as another open door or window, and must be secured.
Portable evaporative cooler Uses evaporation to cool air while adding moisture indoors. Best suited to dry climates; added humidity can make it a poor fit in humid weather. Outdoor air quality and the unit’s filtration matter.
Window shades or reflective coverings Reduce direct sun and heat entering through windows. Can help limit heat gain, but the sources cited here do not establish a particular product’s tested performance, current price, or temperature reduction.

Fans: useful for comfort, not room cooling

A fan moves air across your skin, helping sweat evaporate and making you feel cooler. It does not lower the air temperature. The CDC’s current guidance says to use indoor fans only when temperatures are below 90°F; above that, go to an air-conditioned place or use another cooler location rather than relying on a fan. The CDC’s direct warning is: “Don’t rely solely on fans to keep you cool.” Read the CDC’s guidance for people without AC.

Window fans: exhaust stale indoor air safely

A window fan can exhaust indoor air, drawing replacement air through another open door or window. Secure the fan in place and make sure the other opening is safe. Do not open windows or doors if doing so creates a fall risk or another health or safety problem. CDC guidance describes window-fan use and window safety.

Evaporative coolers: consider climate and air quality

Evaporative cooling depends on water evaporating into the air, so these units are generally better suited to dry conditions. They add indoor humidity, making them less suitable when outdoor air is already humid. The EPA advises avoiding evaporative coolers during high outdoor air pollution if the unit lacks a high-efficiency filter. See the EPA’s indoor air quality guidance.

What to do when a room is dangerously hot

Do not treat a fan as a substitute for a cooler place when indoor temperatures are above the CDC’s 90°F threshold. Hydrate, consider a cool shower or bath, reduce heat from cooking, and spend time in an air-conditioned location if one is available. Check on others who may be affected by heat. Seek medical care immediately for heat-illness symptoms such as muscle cramps, headache, nausea, or vomiting. People who need help paying energy bills can contact the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). CDC guidance covers these steps and assistance.
