For one pre-encoded video looping continuously, Amazon Lightsail’s Linux/Unix IPv4 plan is a useful low-cost starting point: AWS lists 2 vCPUs, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB SSD storage and 3 TB of transfer for $12 per month. It is not a universal cheapest choice: price, transfer terms, availability and taxes can vary by region. The main cost to check is not just the server—it is the outgoing data generated by a stream running all month.

Best low-cost VPS options at a glance

These options serve different needs and regions, so compare the full workload and transfer terms rather than choosing by headline price alone. Figures below are provider-published and should be rechecked before purchase.

Option Published details Best fit and qualification
StreamNeo Cloud service for looping uploaded video to YouTube; one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with a first day free and no card. First choice if you would rather not administer a VPS: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Amazon Lightsail Linux/Unix with IPv4 AWS lists $12/month for 2 vCPUs, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB SSD and 3 TB transfer. A useful published-price comparison point for one pre-encoded loop. AWS transfer allowances vary by region, and excess outbound transfer may be charged.
Hetzner Cloud cost-optimized Official page describes plans for tests, development, smaller projects and low-to-medium CPU use; EU servers include at least 20 TB traffic. CX23 was marked unavailable when checked. Potentially attractive for EU traffic needs, but do not assume the CX23 is purchasable or quote an unshown price; check current availability and region pricing.
Inservers streaming VPS India-specific page lists ₹880/month for a 2-vCore, 4-GB basic plan and claims 1 Gbps unmetered transfer. Regional provider offer; it recommends the tier for one 1080p60 relay without transcoding. The claim does not establish performance for every YouTube stream.
Space-Node streaming VPS Its guide describes a managed OBS VPS from €9.99/month and separately discusses a small FFmpeg VPS setup. Consider only after checking the seller’s current plan details and terms; an OBS workload needs more resources than a static FFmpeg loop.

For cloud streaming rather than server administration, see StreamNeo. For self-managed hosting, Lightsail is the clearest priced baseline in the published details here, not a claim that it is cheapest in every country.

How much VPS capacity does a prerecorded loop need?

The answer depends on whether the server merely sends an already-encoded file or has to render scenes and encode video while streaming. A 2026 Space-Node guide recommends 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM as a baseline for a static FFmpeg loop with files encoded locally. This is a published recommendation, not an independent benchmark.

Pre-encoded file with FFmpeg

For a single video that has already been encoded to the format and bitrate you intend to stream, compare plans around 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM. The source guide characterizes this workload as relatively light. Actual resource use depends on the file, FFmpeg settings, and server environment; test your own stream before relying on it unattended.

OBS scenes or browser sources

Do not apply the static-loop baseline to a desktop-style OBS workload. Space-Node recommends 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM as a 720p starter and 6 vCPU and 12 GB for 1080p with browser sources. These are its recommendations, not test results.

Live transcoding or several outputs

Encoding in real time or producing multiple outputs raises CPU demand. Inservers recommends four vCores as a minimum for real-time 1080p transcoding on its India-focused service; that is vendor advice, not a general performance benchmark. Select a plan for the actual encoding load and validate it with a real session.

Why transfer allowance can matter more than the CPU price

A 24/7 stream continuously sends video out of the server. Inservers estimates that one 1080p stream uses about 6–8 Mbps. At a constant bitrate for 30 days, that is approximately 1.94–2.59 decimal TB of data, calculated as bitrate multiplied by seconds and divided by eight. This is a calculation from the provider’s estimate, not observed usage; your configured bitrate, reconnects, protocol overhead and the provider’s billing definitions can change the total.

AWS says Lightsail counts both inbound and outbound transfer toward its allowance, while charging overage only for outbound transfer above the allowance. Allowances differ by region. Its listed 3 TB plan gives some headroom over the 6–8 Mbps example, but check the allowance and overage terms for your chosen region and use your own bitrate to estimate consumption. AWS describes Lightsail as offering a “low, predictable price”; treat that as AWS marketing language, not an independent cost finding.

How to choose a VPS for your stream

  1. Define the pipeline. Decide whether the VPS will send a pre-encoded file with FFmpeg, run OBS scenes, transcode live, or serve multiple outputs. This determines CPU and memory needs.
  2. Estimate monthly outbound data. Multiply your target bitrate by the seconds in your streaming month and divide by eight. Compare the result with the provider’s regional transfer allowance and read its overage rules.
  3. Check storage and region. Confirm that the media fits on the plan’s disk, and choose a region with suitable network routing to your audience and YouTube ingest. Compare the exact regional price, taxes and availability.
  4. Include maintenance in the comparison. A VPS requires Linux and FFmpeg administration, monitoring, restart handling and stream-key protection. Compare that work—not just the server fee—with a managed looping service.
  5. Test before depending on it. Run the intended stream for at least an hour, monitor YouTube’s stream health and server resources, then test a reboot and recovery procedure before leaving it unattended.

Set up a nonstop prerecorded stream on a VPS

The steps below describe the operating workflow; exact commands depend on your operating system, FFmpeg build, file format and YouTube ingest settings. Confirm YouTube’s current requirements in its official documentation before launch. The cited guide recommends enabling live streaming in advance, protecting the persistent stream key, keeping bitrate stable, testing stream health for at least an hour, and using rights-cleared audio and video; it is not an authoritative source for YouTube policy.

  1. Confirm channel access. Enable YouTube live streaming ahead of the planned start. New channels may need to wait for live access to become available, so verify access in YouTube Studio rather than assuming it is immediate.
  2. Prepare the media locally. Encode the video before uploading it to the VPS if you want the lighter static-loop workload. Check playback, dimensions, frame rate and audio, and make sure you have rights to all included video and music.
  3. Create the VPS and transfer the file. Select a Linux plan sized for your pipeline, transfer allowance and storage needs. Upload the media securely and confirm the complete file arrived.
  4. Configure YouTube’s live event and key. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key into the FFmpeg publishing configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not commit it to a public repository or expose it in logs.
  5. Run FFmpeg as a supervised process. Configure it to loop the prerecorded file and publish to the ingest address YouTube provides. Use a process supervisor or service restart policy so the process can restart after failure or reboot; rotate logs to prevent them filling the disk.
  6. Check the live output. Start the process, confirm YouTube receives it, and inspect stream health, audio/video playback and server load for at least an hour. Verify the video loops as intended.
  7. Test recovery. Reboot the VPS and confirm the supervisor brings the stream process back. Check that YouTube resumes receiving the feed and that the stream key remains private.

YouTube policy and rights checks

Do not assume that continuous availability guarantees eligibility for monetization, views or watch hours. YouTube’s current continuous-stream rules and eligibility requirements are not established by the provider guide cited here, so confirm them in YouTube’s own documentation before publishing a stream. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, including music; a 24/7 format does not remove copyright obligations.

VPS or managed cloud looping?

A VPS suits people who want root access, custom software and control over the streaming pipeline, and are willing to maintain Linux and FFmpeg. A managed service is worth comparing if reducing server administration is more important than controlling the server itself. Assess current limits and terms—stream count, resolution, file size, scheduling, restart behavior, cancellation and support—rather than relying on vendor uptime or savings claims.

StreamZop describes a $9/month Starter tier with unlimited hours and 1080p30 on its page; those are vendor-published offer details and should be checked against current terms. StreamNeo’s comparison page contrasts VPS server, bandwidth and maintenance work with a fixed service fee. For StreamNeo’s own features and terms, use its official site.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Quick Recap

What can make a 24/7 VPS stream fail?

  • Transfer allowance is exhausted: Estimate data at your actual bitrate and check the region’s billing terms; reduce bitrate only if the resulting quality remains suitable.
  • The stream stops after a process or reboot failure: Add a supervisor or restart policy, rotate logs, and perform a reboot test before depending on the VPS.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck that live streaming is enabled, the correct event and ingest address are in use, and the stream key has not been mistyped or revoked.
  • Video or audio is unstable: Keep bitrate stable, check server load and network conditions, and run a sustained test while monitoring YouTube’s stream health.
  • The stream key appears in logs or code: Remove exposed copies, replace the key in YouTube Studio, and store the new key in a protected configuration rather than a public repository.
  • The chosen VPS struggles with the workload: A static file loop and OBS/browser scenes are not equivalent. Reassess CPU and RAM against the actual pipeline; the larger published OBS recommendations should not be treated as FFmpeg requirements.
