For one exact color, use an eyedropper on the screenshot. To build a palette, use a browser extension that explicitly extracts colors from screenshots, or open the image in an installed editor and sample it manually. These are ordinary color-selection and extraction tasks; the tools covered here do not require AI. Choose based on whether you need a pixel from the rendered image, colors declared by the webpage, or both.
Choose a tool based on what you need to extract
| Approach | Best for | What it returns | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native browser eyedropper | One color from a visible pixel | A selected color value | Browser support and, for web apps using the API, secure-context requirements |
| Browser extension | Repeated sampling or a generated palette | Pixel values, screenshot-derived colors, page-style colors, or some combination | Whether it reads screenshot pixels or page styles, its permissions, export options, and data-handling claims |
| Installed image or design editor | Offline inspection or a one-off screenshot | Manually sampled values and a palette you assemble | You must open the image and choose the representative colors yourself |
| Remote palette service | Convenience when local processing is not necessary | A service-dependent palette | Capture behavior, screenshot privacy, and retention; no service was independently assessed here |
Screenshot colors and webpage colors are not the same input
A screenshot records rendered pixels: what appeared in that capture, including imagery, gradients, and interface elements. A tool that reads page styles instead may report declared or computed CSS colors. Those values can help identify interface colors, but they are not necessarily the colors most visible in the screenshot. Some extensions advertise both kinds of extraction; check which output you are viewing before treating a result as a match.
A list of dominant colors is not automatically a website’s definitive brand palette. For a purposeful UI palette, inspect the intended design tokens or brand assets where available. If you are working from the screenshot alone, sample the background, text, and accent areas separately, and record the page and capture context alongside each hex value.
Local tools to consider
Native EyeDropper API: one selected pixel
Chrome for Developers describes the EyeDropper API as a way to sample a color from the screen. It requires deliberate user interaction: the user activates the picker and selects a pixel. Chrome’s documentation reports support in Chromium-based desktop browsers such as Chrome and Edge from version 95. MDN describes the API as limited availability and restricted to secure contexts. It is a way to pick one color, not a palette-generation tool. Check current browser support before relying on it.

Color Picker by Ceres: image and page extraction
The Chrome Web Store listing says Color Picker by Ceres can pick screen colors and extract colors from images or entire webpages. The listing also says it runs locally without accounts or servers. These are the publisher’s claims, not independently audited guarantees; check the extension’s current permissions and data practices before use.
Pick Any Pixel: screenshot sampling and page palettes
The Chrome Web Store listing describes screenshot-based pixel sampling and page palettes. Its version 1.0.1 listing, updated September 20, 2026, claims no network requests and says tab screenshots stay in memory until the picker closes. Treat those statements as listing claims rather than an independent privacy audit.

Colorize: screenshot and style colors
Colorize’s product documentation describes dominant colors from screenshots, page-style colors, an eyedropper, and palette export. It also claims browser-local processing. Those features and privacy assurances come from the vendor; confirm that the current extension behaves as you need and review its permissions before installing.
Workflow: extract a useful palette from a screenshot
- Decide whether you need a pixel or a palette. Use an eyedropper for one exact pixel. For several colors, choose an extension that explicitly describes screenshot-pixel extraction, or sample manually in an installed editor.
- Open the screenshot locally. In an image editor, use its eyedropper on the image. If using a browser-based implementation of the EyeDropper API, first check that the browser supports it and that the page is in a secure context. Support is limited.
- Separate screenshot extraction from page-style extraction. If using an extension, verify whether its palette comes from rendered screenshot pixels, page styles, or both. Do not assume those sources produce interchangeable results.
- Sample purposeful regions. Choose background, text, and accent colors separately rather than relying only on a dominant-color list. Note the hex values and their source, such as page, screenshot, region, and light or dark state.
- Protect sensitive screenshots. Prefer an installed editor or a locally processed extension over uploading a private capture to a remote service. Review permissions and data-handling information; store-page privacy claims are not an audit.
What to expect—and what not to assume
The available product descriptions establish advertised features, not comparative accuracy, speed, or independently verified privacy. No independent benchmark of the listed tools is available here. For an exact color, verify that the picker sampled the intended pixel; for a palette, compare the results with the visible screenshot and the page’s design tokens or brand assets when those matter.
