Best overall setup: use Home Assistant as the control plane for lights, sensors, locks, and other devices; run a tool-capable model through Ollama; use n8n for Gmail and Google Calendar workflows; and put Open WebUI in front when you want one chat interface for several local model backends. Choose LM Studio instead of Ollama if a desktop application and an OpenAI-compatible local endpoint matter more than server-style operation.
No single application is equally good at device control, email operations, calendar logic, model serving, and chat. A reliable private assistant separates those jobs, limits the actions each component can perform, and requires approval before messages are sent, deleted, or used to trigger sensitive home actions.
Which tool should you choose?
The right choice depends on the system you are trying to build, not on a universal model leaderboard. Home Assistant is the strongest fit for controlling devices because its LLM framework lets integrations contribute tools that a language model can call. n8n is better for multi-step work across Gmail and Google Calendar. Open WebUI is the most flexible front end for switching between local providers, while LM Studio is aimed at people who prefer a desktop graphical interface.

| Tool | Best role | Device-control depth | Email and calendar connectors | Local API or provider support | Workflow orchestration | User interface | Safety profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant | Smart-home control plane and conversational home queries | Strongest; integrations expose callable device tools | Home Assistant currently lists 18 email, SMS, and calls integrations; coverage varies by integration | Uses its own LLM framework and can connect to an external Ollama server | Good for device automations; not a full business-process engine | Home dashboard plus conversation agents | Entity allow-listing and confirmation are essential; Ollama device control is labeled experimental |
| Ollama | Local inference server for a Home Assistant conversation agent or other clients | Indirect; the client supplies tools | No native Gmail or Calendar workflow layer in the documented Home Assistant use case | Local model-serving API; Home Assistant connects to an external Ollama server | Minimal by itself | Primarily server and command-line oriented | Only models that support tools can control Home Assistant; smaller models are more error-prone |
| n8n | Multi-step Gmail and Google Calendar automation | Can call Home Assistant or other APIs, but is not itself a device-control hub | Gmail operations include reading, sending, replying, labeling, and marking messages; Google Calendar nodes are documented | Documentation lists Ollama AI components and API-based integrations | Strongest for branching, approvals, retries, and scheduled jobs | Visual workflow editor | Keep send, delete, bulk-label, and home-control actions behind explicit approval |
| Open WebUI | One self-hosted chat interface for several local backends | Depends on the connected backend and tools | No replacement for dedicated Gmail or Calendar workflow nodes | Connects Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM, LM Studio, and other OpenAI-compatible endpoints | Limited compared with n8n | Strongest general chat and provider-switching layer | Self-hosting helps keep prompts local, but connected tools still need separate permissions |
| LM Studio | Desktop local model runner with a documented local endpoint | Indirect; another application must provide tools | Not a dedicated connector layer | OpenAI-compatible endpoint at http://localhost:1234 |
Minimal by itself | Strong desktop GUI for downloading and running models | Endpoint access should remain on the local machine or a protected network |
Home Assistant’s catalog contained 1,569 integrations when accessed on October 20, 2026. That breadth is why it is a better device abstraction layer than asking a general chat interface to speak directly to every brand and protocol. The catalog also lists 18 integrations covering email, SMS, and calls, but those integrations do not make Home Assistant a substitute for a full email workflow engine.

How a private assistant is assembled
Think in four layers. The model layer generates text and tool calls. The serving layer runs that model locally. The control layer exposes narrowly scoped actions. The workflow layer sequences actions across services and waits for approval where needed.
- Model: choose a local model that supports tool calling when it must operate Home Assistant or n8n tools. A model that can only produce text cannot safely execute a device action.
- Inference server: Ollama or LM Studio loads the model and exposes a local API. Open WebUI can sit in front of either, as well as llama.cpp, vLLM, and other OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
- Control plane: Home Assistant translates approved tool calls into service actions for entities such as lights, switches, climate devices, and sensors.
- Workflow engine: n8n handles Gmail and Google Calendar nodes, schedules, branching, retries, and approval steps. It can pass a concise result to the model without giving the model unrestricted account access.
This separation also limits failures. If a model misunderstands “turn off the downstairs lights,” Home Assistant can restrict which entities are visible. If an email workflow generates a bad draft, n8n can stop before the send node. If a local model server is unavailable, the control layer can fail closed instead of silently switching to a cloud service.
Home Assistant plus Ollama for device control
What Home Assistant contributes
Home Assistant’s LLM system was introduced in version 2026.7. Its framework allows integrations to contribute tools that an LLM can call for home questions and device control. The system is the part that knows your entity names, areas, states, and service permissions; the model supplies natural-language interpretation.
The Home Assistant documentation describes the Ollama service as an external local server integration introduced in version 2024.4. With it, Home Assistant can create a conversation agent backed by a model running on your own machine. Device control remains experimental, so treat the feature as an assisted interface rather than an autonomous safety system.
Prepare the model server
- Install Ollama on a machine that can reach the Home Assistant host over your private network.
- Download a model explicitly documented as supporting tool calls. Model size, context limits, and tool-calling quality differ; do not assume that a smaller model will follow a long list of entities reliably.
- Keep the Ollama API bound to the local host or a protected network interface. Do not expose it directly to the public internet.
- Record the server address and confirm that Home Assistant can reach it before creating a conversation agent.
In Home Assistant, add the Ollama integration from the integrations area, enter the Ollama server address, and select the downloaded model. The exact model list depends on what is installed on your Ollama host.

Expose a small, deliberate entity set
Home Assistant recommends exposing fewer than 25 entities when experimenting with local LLMs. Start with a handful of noncritical lights, switches, and read-only sensors. Avoid locks, garage doors, alarms, heaters, ovens, medical devices, and anything whose incorrect activation could cause injury or property damage.
- Use clear entity names and areas, such as “desk lamp” in “office,” rather than duplicate or ambiguous names.
- Expose read-only sensors separately from controllable entities so the model can answer questions without receiving unnecessary write permissions.
- Keep scenes and scripts narrow. A script that changes several devices should be reviewed like a privileged API endpoint.
- Test with harmless requests such as “Which lights are on?” before allowing “Turn on” or “Turn off” commands.
Test and constrain conversations
- Ask for a state report and verify that the returned entities and values are correct.
- Issue a single-device command and watch the Home Assistant activity log to confirm which service was called.
- Try ambiguous language, such as “turn off the hall,” and verify that the assistant asks a clarification question instead of guessing.
- Remove any entity that the model misidentifies, and reduce the model’s available tools if a task does not require them.
- Require a human confirmation step for scenes, climate changes, security devices, or commands that affect people who are not in the conversation.
Smaller models may make mistakes even when the entity list is short. A successful demonstration does not prove that every future request will be interpreted correctly. Keep ordinary Home Assistant automations, schedules, and physical controls as the deterministic path for safety-critical behavior.
Connecting Gmail and Google Calendar with n8n
Why n8n is the better workflow layer
n8n describes itself as a tool for connecting apps with APIs and manipulating their data with little or no code. Its documented Gmail node supports reading, sending, replying to, labeling, and marking messages. Its documentation also lists Google Calendar nodes and Ollama AI components, making it suitable for workflows that combine local inference with cloud-service APIs while the workflow engine itself is self-hosted.
Use n8n when a request has multiple steps: find an unread message, extract a date, check calendar conflicts, create a draft, ask for approval, and only then send or schedule something. A chat interface alone is poor at showing state, retries, and audit history for that sequence.
Build a read-only calendar and email assistant first
- Run n8n on a machine that can reach your local model endpoint and Home Assistant. Keep its editor and webhook endpoints behind authentication and a private network or VPN.
- Create Google credentials with the narrowest scopes needed for the first workflow. Start with read access to Gmail and Calendar where possible.
- Add a Gmail trigger or search node, then pass only the relevant fields—sender, subject, date, and a cleaned body excerpt—to the local model. Avoid sending entire mailboxes into prompts.
- Add a Google Calendar lookup node that checks the requested date range and timezone. Return events and conflicts to the model as structured data rather than asking it to infer them from prose.
- Have the model produce a structured proposal containing the intended action, recipients, event time, timezone, and justification.
- Send that proposal to a human approval channel. Continue to the Gmail send/reply node or Calendar create/update node only after approval.
Safe action patterns
| Action | Recommended first implementation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Read email | Allow automatically, with a restricted label or search query | Limits exposure and makes testing reversible |
| Draft a reply | Generate a draft but do not send | A person can check tone, recipients, quoted text, and attachments |
| Send or reply | Require explicit approval containing the final recipient list and body | Prevents prompt errors and accidental disclosure |
| Label or mark messages | Permit only selected labels and bounded searches | Bulk changes are difficult to undo |
| Create a calendar event | Show title, attendees, location, start, end, and timezone for approval | Natural-language dates are easy to misinterpret |
| Delete or archive | Keep disabled until the read-and-draft workflow is reliable | Destructive actions need stronger safeguards |
Keep prompts and data bounded
Pass the minimum message content needed for a decision. Strip signatures, tracking pixels, and unrelated threads where practical. Tell the model which fields are authoritative: Calendar should supply the timezone and event IDs; Gmail should supply message IDs and recipients. Store the original IDs in workflow data so a later node acts on the exact message or event that was reviewed, not on a fresh search that may return different results.

Open WebUI as the shared local chat layer
Open WebUI is a self-hosted interface designed to run entirely offline and connect to multiple providers. Its documented integrations include Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM, LM Studio, and other OpenAI-compatible endpoints. This makes it useful when one household or team wants to switch models without changing the chat application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When Open WebUI is the right choice
- You want one browser interface for several local servers or model families.
- You need a general conversational workspace in addition to Home Assistant’s focused home control.
- You want to compare a fast small model with a slower tool-capable model while keeping conversations in one interface.
- You are comfortable managing authentication, updates, storage, and network access for a self-hosted web application.
Open WebUI does not replace n8n’s Gmail and Calendar nodes. Connecting a model endpoint to a chat interface does not automatically grant safe access to accounts or devices. Add tools through an explicit integration or workflow, and apply the same allow-list and approval rules used elsewhere.
LM Studio for a desktop-first setup
LM Studio suits users who want to download, load, and test local models through a desktop GUI. Its documented local endpoint is http://localhost:1234, using an OpenAI-compatible interface. Applications that accept an OpenAI-style base URL can therefore use LM Studio as their local backend, subject to the application’s model and tool-calling requirements.
Typical LM Studio connection pattern
- Install LM Studio on the desktop that will run inference and load a model that supports the features your client needs.
- Start its local server and verify that it is listening at
http://localhost:1234. - In Open WebUI or another compatible client, select an OpenAI-compatible connection and enter that local endpoint.
- For n8n or a custom integration, configure the corresponding local base URL and test a simple completion before enabling tools.
- Keep the endpoint local unless you have deliberately configured authentication and network controls; the documented local address is not a public service.
LM Studio is a backend and desktop management experience, not a Gmail or smart-home automation system. Pair it with Home Assistant for device actions or n8n for account workflows.
Choosing between Ollama and LM Studio
| Question | Choose Ollama when… | Choose LM Studio when… |
|---|---|---|
| How do you prefer to operate the server? | You want a lightweight local service that other machines can call | You want a desktop application with visible model controls |
| What is the Home Assistant path? | Home Assistant has a documented integration and external-server workflow | You would connect through a compatible API layer rather than the documented Ollama integration |
| What client compatibility matters? | You want the Ollama ecosystem and its local API | You need the documented OpenAI-compatible endpoint at http://localhost:1234 |
| How much workflow logic is included? | Inference serving only; add n8n or another orchestrator | Inference serving and desktop model management; add an orchestrator separately |
Neither backend is automatically safer. Safety comes from which tools are exposed, what credentials are available, whether actions require approval, and how failures are logged.

Privacy, permissions, and network design
Keep inference and orchestration private
Local inference can keep prompt content on equipment you control, but Gmail and Google Calendar data still travels to those services through their APIs. Self-hosting n8n or Open WebUI does not remove the need to protect OAuth tokens, browser sessions, backups, logs, and uploaded files.
- Bind model servers to localhost or a trusted private interface whenever possible.
- Use separate service accounts or OAuth credentials for experiments and production workflows.
- Store credentials in the platform’s secret mechanism rather than in prompts, notes, or workflow text.
- Review execution logs for message bodies, calendar details, and device states; redact or limit retention where the platform allows it.
- Segment smart-home devices and automation servers from guest networks, and expose only the ports required for the workflow.
- Update Home Assistant, n8n, Open WebUI, and model servers through their normal maintenance process before exposing a new integration.
Use least privilege as the default
Grant a workflow read access before write access, one calendar before every calendar, and a small entity set before the whole house. A model should never receive credentials directly. It should request a named operation, and the control layer should validate the operation’s parameters before execution.
Troubleshooting common failures
The assistant answers but does not control a device
- Check that the selected model supports tool calling; text-only models cannot execute Home Assistant tools.
- Confirm that the Ollama server is reachable from Home Assistant and that the configured model is loaded.
- Reduce the exposed entity list and use unambiguous names.
- Inspect Home Assistant logs to see whether a tool call was generated, rejected, or mapped to the wrong entity.
The model chooses the wrong entity
Rename or regroup entities, expose fewer than 25 while testing, and require clarification for ambiguous areas. Prefer a deterministic script for repeated multi-device actions instead of asking the model to select every device independently.
n8n sends the wrong message or event
- Insert an approval node before every send, reply, delete, or external attendee invitation.
- Display the exact recipient IDs, event IDs, timezone, and final text in the approval request.
- Carry the reviewed Gmail message ID or Calendar event ID through the workflow rather than running a new broad search before the write step.
- Limit trigger searches and add idempotency checks so retries do not create duplicate events or replies.
Open WebUI or a client cannot reach the backend
Verify whether the backend is listening on localhost or a LAN address, whether the client runs on the same machine, and whether a firewall blocks the port. For LM Studio, confirm that the local server is running at http://localhost:1234. For Ollama, confirm the server address configured in the client and Home Assistant. Do not solve a connectivity problem by exposing an unauthenticated endpoint to the internet.

- Stage 1 — read-only chat: run Ollama or LM Studio locally and connect it to Open WebUI. Test model quality with private, non-sensitive prompts.
- Stage 2 — home status: connect Home Assistant, expose a small set of read-only sensors, and verify state answers.
- Stage 3 — one harmless device: expose a single light or switch, require confirmation, and review every tool call.
- Stage 4 — calendar lookup: use n8n to read availability and summarize it without creating or changing events.
- Stage 5 — email drafts: let n8n read a bounded mailbox query and create drafts for approval.
- Stage 6 — approved writes: enable sending, event creation, or additional device actions one operation at a time, with explicit limits and rollback procedures.
Bottom line
For a private assistant that spans your house and your accounts, combine specialized components rather than searching for one “best” local LLM application. Home Assistant should own device permissions and entity control. Ollama is the simplest documented local inference path for that integration, provided the model supports tools and you keep the entity set small. n8n should own Gmail and Google Calendar workflows, especially anything involving multiple steps or approvals. Open WebUI is the most useful shared chat layer across local providers, while LM Studio is the better fit for a desktop-first operator who wants an OpenAI-compatible local endpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a local assistant read my Gmail and control lights at the same time?
Yes, but use separate permissioned paths: Home Assistant should expose a limited set of device tools, while n8n handles Gmail and Calendar operations. Require approval before sending mail, changing events, or invoking sensitive home actions.
What is the best local LLM for Home Assistant?
There is no universal model winner. The important requirement is tool-calling support. Home Assistant’s Ollama integration can use a local model, but smaller models may make more mistakes, so start with fewer than 25 exposed entities and test every action.
Do I need Open WebUI if I already use Ollama?
No. Ollama can serve models directly. Open WebUI is useful when you want a browser chat interface or need to switch among Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, vLLM, and other compatible backends.
Is LM Studio a replacement for n8n?
No. LM Studio runs local models and exposes a documented endpoint at http://localhost:1234. n8n provides the Gmail, Google Calendar, scheduling, branching, and approval workflow functions.
