For the shortest path to a working PC force-sensing joystick, use a 5 kg straight-bar load cell with a Leo Bodnar bidirectional LC-amp and a joystick controller that accepts analogue voltage. For a programmable, lower-cost design, connect one or more straight-bar cells to HX711 boards and publish the readings through a USB HID microcontroller. A complete build always has three layers: the mechanical load cell, bridge signal conditioning, and a controller that reports calibrated axes to the computer.

The right choice depends less on the headline kilogram rating than on the lever geometry, preload, overload protection, number of axes, and how much firmware you want to write. This guide compares the practical options and gives wiring, calibration, and fault-finding procedures for compact one- and two-axis builds.

What a force-sensing joystick actually needs

A conventional joystick measures displacement with a potentiometer or magnetic sensor. A force-sensing stick does not need to move appreciably: pushing the grip changes the strain in a load cell, and that tiny Wheatstone-bridge signal is converted into an axis value.

  1. Mechanical sensor: a bar, disc, S-type, or four-gauge bridge that experiences the applied force.
  2. Signal conditioner: an analogue instrumentation amplifier or a digital bridge ADC such as the HX711.
  3. USB/HID controller: hardware and firmware that turn the conditioned signal into joystick axes, buttons, and (if needed) a hat switch.

Removing any layer creates a different problem. A load cell cannot be connected directly to a USB joystick board because its output is only millivolts. An HX711 can measure the bridge, but it does not itself appear as a joystick to Windows or macOS. Conversely, an analogue joystick input needs a voltage in its expected range, not raw bridge wires.

Choosing the load cell

5 kg SparkFun TAL220B: the compact default

The TAL220B is a 5 kg straight-bar aluminium-alloy cell. Its four strain gauges form a complete Wheatstone bridge, so it can connect directly to a suitable amplifier. The body is 55 mm × 12.7 mm × 12.7 mm, with M5 mounting holes, and it has IP65 protection according to SparkFun’s current documentation.

That short 55 mm body is useful when the stick mechanism has limited depth. Use the rated capacity as the maximum calibrated load, not as a target operating force: your lever should reach the desired axis range with comfortable hand pressure while leaving margin for a hard push or impact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10 kg SparkFun TAL220: more headroom, longer bar

The TAL220 is a 10 kg straight-bar aluminium-alloy cell with an 80 mm × 12.7 mm × 12.7 mm body, M4/M5 mounting holes, and IP66 protection. It is the higher-capacity comparison for a mechanism that can deliver larger forces or needs more overload margin, but the extra 25 mm of bar length affects the base plate, lever and preload arrangement.

A 10 kg rating does not automatically make a stick feel better. If the same hand force produces only a small fraction of the cell’s range, the electrical signal available for an axis is smaller and noise becomes more noticeable. Size the cell from the actual force at the sensing point, including lever ratio and expected overloads.

Mini bars, disc cells, S-types and four-gauge assemblies

SparkFun also documents 500 g and 100 g mini bars, 200 kg S-type cells, and 50 kg and 200 kg disc cells. These are useful when the mechanism or force direction demands a different shape, but they are not interchangeable mechanically: mounting, preload, allowable load direction and bridge wiring must match the manufacturer’s drawing.

Four individual strain gauges can be combined into one Wheatstone bridge with a combinator board. That approach can work for a platform or multi-point stick, but it adds four mechanical load paths and requires the gauges to be arranged so their tension and compression changes add rather than cancel. It is generally more involved than installing one finished bar cell.

Capacity and geometry decision rule

  1. Estimate the largest hand force and the lever ratio. A long grip can multiply force at the cell, while a short arm can reduce it.
  2. Include preload and the worst credible strike or clamp error. The cell must survive that event without entering an unsafe overload condition.
  3. Choose the lowest rated capacity that safely covers the resulting peak force. A very large cell is not a substitute for a good mechanical ratio.
  4. Check body length, hole size, force direction and available space before ordering.
  5. Confirm the bridge pinout from the exact vendor and part number; wire colours are not universal.

Signal conditioning: HX711 or an analogue LC-amp?

HX711 digital bridge ADC

The SparkFun HX711 board accepts a standard four-wire Wheatstone bridge and combines amplification with a digital ADC. It runs from 2.7–5 V, draws under 1.5 mA, and provides selectable 10 samples per second (SPS) or 80 SPS output. A two-wire clock/data interface connects it to a microcontroller.

The documented 80 SPS setting is the faster option, not a guarantee of end-to-end joystick latency. Your firmware still has to read the conversion, apply zero and span calibration, filter noise, map the result to an axis and send a USB HID report. Test the complete mechanism at the filtering level you intend to use before relying on it for rapid force-control inputs.

SparkFun documents Arduino-library integration and examples for ATmega328P, ESP8266, ESP32 and STM32 families. The board is therefore a good fit when you want programmable dead zones, non-linear curves, diagnostics, button handling or two independent force axes.

Leo Bodnar LC-amp analogue conditioner

Leo Bodnar’s bidirectional LC-amp is specifically intended for force-sensitive joysticks. It accepts the millivolt-level bridge signal and, from a 5 V supply, produces approximately 0–4.9 V. That voltage can feed an analogue joystick input in the same way as a potentiometer-style axis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The standalone product documentation also specifies a 0–10 mV input range for the unidirectional version and connection to a standard analogue controller input. Select the bidirectional version when the stick must report push and pull around a centre point; verify the exact board’s polarity and wiring before installation.

Characteristic HX711 route LC-amp route
Output to next stage Digital clock/data readings Approximately 0–4.9 V analogue output from 5 V supply (bidirectional model)
Controller required Programmable microcontroller with USB HID firmware Any compatible analogue joystick input; BU0836-LC is a direct USB option
Documented rate or range 10 SPS or 80 SPS selectable Bridge input is millivolt-level; unidirectional documentation specifies 0–10 mV
Best reason to choose it Custom calibration, filtering, diagnostics and multiple axes Minimal firmware and a conventional voltage-axis signal
Work you still must do USB reports, calibration, filtering and mechanical protection Axis calibration, polarity, stops and controller configuration

Choose the LC-amp when an existing joystick controller already accepts analogue voltage and you want a quick, predictable signal path. Choose HX711 when software-defined behavior matters more than avoiding firmware development.

USB controller options

Leo Bodnar BU0836-LC

The BU0836-LC combines a dedicated load-cell input with a USB joystick interface. Its load-cell channel is 12-bit, or 4096 steps. It also provides seven additional 12-bit analogue inputs, 32 button inputs and an eight-way hat input. It is USB bus powered and is designed to work without installing drivers on supported Windows and Mac systems.

With the LC-amp, the BU0836-LC is the shortest route from a bar cell to a conventional PC joystick: the amplifier supplies the voltage and the board handles USB joystick reporting and configuration/calibration. The board has one dedicated load-cell input, so a two-axis force stick needs a second strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handling two force-sensing axes

For two axes, you can use two conditioned analogue signals if the controller’s additional analogue inputs accept the voltage range and polarity you need. One practical arrangement is a bidirectional LC-amp per axis, with one axis on the BU0836-LC load-cell channel and the other on a suitable analogue channel; confirm electrical compatibility and configuration in the controller documentation.

The more flexible arrangement is two load cells, two HX711 boards and a microcontroller with enough GPIO and USB HID capability. Firmware can read each channel independently, apply separate zero/span values, and publish X and Y reports. This also lets you compensate for cross-axis coupling in the mechanism, but it increases coding and test work.

Mechanical design before wiring

Mount the cell in its intended load direction

Constrain the non-sensing end and apply force through the sensing end as shown in the cell’s mechanical drawing. Do not clamp the active section, twist the bar, or use a mounting screw that bottoms out and introduces an unintended load. TAL220B uses M5 mounting holes; TAL220 provides M4 and M5 options, so select fasteners and a base plate that match the actual part.

Set preload and lever ratio deliberately

A small, controlled preload keeps the mechanism seated and can prevent rattle, but excessive preload consumes measuring range and can permanently bias the bridge. The lever ratio determines how much hand force reaches the cell. Adjust the grip length or transfer point so normal use occupies a useful portion of the electrical range without approaching the rated limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add hard stops

Install positive mechanical stops before calibration. A hand strike, dropped grip or software fault must be stopped by the structure rather than by the load cell’s elastic element. Check the stop clearance at both ends and ensure the stop itself does not touch during normal travel, or it will create a false dead zone and inconsistent force.

Wiring a bar cell to an HX711 and microcontroller

The usual four-wire colour convention documented for the cited SparkFun setup is red = excitation positive, black = excitation negative, white = signal negative, and green = signal positive; yellow may be an optional shield. Colours vary between manufacturers, so verify the exact cell pinout with its datasheet or continuity measurements before applying power.

  1. With power disconnected, identify excitation plus/minus and signal plus/minus from the cell documentation.
  2. Connect the four bridge wires to the HX711 excitation and signal terminals. Connect the optional shield only as the board documentation specifies; do not assume it is another bridge lead.
  3. Power the HX711 within its 2.7–5 V range and connect its clock and data pins to the microcontroller.
  4. Keep bridge wires short, twisted where practical, and away from motors, switching regulators and USB cables. Provide strain relief so movement at the stick cannot flex the solder joints.
  5. Load an HX711 library appropriate to your microcontroller family and confirm that raw readings change smoothly when you press and release the stick.

Reversing signal plus and signal minus normally reverses axis direction; reversing excitation leads can also change polarity, but do not experiment by randomly applying power. Correct the mapping in firmware after confirming the bridge is wired safely.

Wiring an LC-amp to an analogue joystick controller

  1. Connect the load cell to the LC-amp using the amplifier’s documented excitation and signal terminals.
  2. Supply the amplifier with the specified 5 V rail and common its ground with the joystick controller.
  3. Connect the bidirectional output to the controller’s analogue axis input, and verify that the input tolerates the amplifier’s approximately 0–4.9 V range.
  4. Power the controller over USB, open its configuration utility, and observe the raw axis while applying equal push and pull forces.
  5. Reverse the signal pair or use the controller’s direction setting if the axis moves opposite to the intended direction.

Never connect the raw bridge directly to an analogue input and expect useful resolution. The bridge output is millivolt-level; the amplifier is the stage that raises it into the controller’s voltage range.

Calibration, filtering and perceived latency

Zero and span

Calibrate only after the stops, preload and grip are installed. Record the unloaded centre (or the defined preload point), then apply known positive and negative forces without touching the mechanical stops. Map those readings to the desired minimum, centre and maximum axis values. Repeat after the mechanism has warmed up and after tightening any fasteners that could alter preload.

Filtering without making the stick sluggish

Bridge signals contain electrical noise and mechanical vibration. A short moving average or low-pass filter can make the axis stable, but every additional sample increases response delay. HX711’s 80 SPS mode gives more frequent conversions than 10 SPS; it does not remove USB, firmware or filter latency. Start with the lightest filtering that prevents visible jitter, then test rapid reversals and small force changes in the actual game or simulator.

Dead zone and curves

Use a narrow software dead zone only for residual drift after mechanical correction. A wide dead zone hides poor preload and reduces low-force control. A response curve can give finer control near centre while preserving full-range output, but apply the same curve consistently to both axes and document it so later recalibration is reproducible.

Two-axis architecture and cross-axis errors

A force-sensing X/Y stick is not automatically independent just because it has two cells. A flexible top plate, tilted pivot or uneven preload can send part of an X push into the Y cell. With an HX711 design, measure each axis while pushing the other in several directions and, if necessary, subtract a small calibrated cross-coupling term in firmware. With an analogue controller, improve the mechanical isolation first; the controller cannot distinguish a genuine second-axis force from a mechanically coupled signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the two bridge circuits physically separated enough to avoid wiring strain, label each cell, and store separate zero/span values. If one channel saturates while the other is unloaded, inspect the mounting and bridge wiring before changing software gains.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely causes Checks and fixes
No reading or a fixed value Missing excitation, wrong HX711 pins, broken bridge wire, or firmware using the wrong data/clock pins Measure supply voltage, verify the four bridge functions from the cell documentation, inspect strain relief, and test raw HX711 readings before HID code
Axis moves in the wrong direction Signal polarity reversed or software axis direction inverted Change the signal mapping in firmware/controller settings or swap signal plus and minus with power removed
Large drift at rest Changing preload, loose hardware, thermal movement, electrical interference or an over-wide filter window Tighten the non-sensing mount, verify hard-stop clearance, shorten and shield wiring where appropriate, then recalibrate zero
Jitter or visible steps Noise, vibration, insufficient filtering or a mechanically oversized cell used at a tiny fraction of range Improve grounding and mounting, use the HX711’s tested rate/filter combination, and reconsider capacity and lever ratio
Signal clips at one end Preload consumes range, the force exceeds the cell or amplifier range, or the analogue input cannot accept the output voltage Remove unintended preload, confirm the bidirectional LC-amp and controller voltage ranges, and add or reposition mechanical stops
USB joystick is not visible Custom firmware is not enumerating as HID, USB power is absent, or the controller is unsupported Test the controller with a known-good USB cable and HID example, then check enumeration before debugging load-cell math

A practical build sequence

  1. Define the feel: decide desired centre force, maximum hand force, axis travel and whether one or two axes are required.
  2. Choose the cell: start with the 5 kg TAL220B for a compact mechanism; move to the 10 kg TAL220 when the calculated peak force or mounting arrangement demands it.
  3. Build and protect the mechanics: install the correct M4/M5 hardware, set a modest preload, and fit hard stops before connecting electronics.
  4. Select the signal path: use a bidirectional LC-amp for an analogue controller, or HX711 boards when a programmable microcontroller is part of the design.
  5. Prove the raw signal: check bridge polarity and observe stable readings or voltage before adding USB mapping.
  6. Calibrate at the finished assembly: record centre and endpoints with the real grip, preload and stops installed.
  7. Validate under abuse: test fast reversals, maximum intentional force and an accidental hand strike while confirming that stops—not the cell—take the impact.

Which combination should you buy?

For a first compact single-axis or two-axis prototype

Use a 5 kg TAL220B when its 55 mm body and M5 holes fit the mechanism. Pair each axis with a bidirectional LC-amp if you want analogue outputs and minimal code. The BU0836-LC is a convenient USB endpoint when one dedicated load-cell channel plus general analogue, button and hat inputs meets your needs.

For a high-force or physically longer mechanism

Choose the 10 kg TAL220 when the calculated peak load and overload margin exceed what the 5 kg bar can safely provide, and reserve enough space for its 80 mm body. Confirm whether M4 or M5 mounting holes best suit your base plate.

For custom firmware and two independent force axes

Use one HX711 per cell and a microcontroller that can present USB HID reports. This is the most adaptable architecture for separate axis curves, cross-coupling correction, diagnostics and unusual button layouts, but it requires the most validation of sampling, filtering, calibration and USB behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Start with the lowest-capacity straight-bar cell that safely covers the real peak force: the 5 kg TAL220B is the compact default, while the 10 kg TAL220 trades space for headroom. Use a bidirectional LC-amp and an analogue joystick input when you want the fastest path to a working controller. Use HX711 boards and a programmable USB HID microcontroller when two axes, custom filtering or firmware control justify the additional development. In every case, correct mounting, verified bridge wiring, hard stops and calibration determine the final feel more than the load-cell number printed on the package.
