OBS Studio is the best general starting point on Linux for looping a local video or playlist to YouTube Live. Use its Media Source with Loop for one file, or its VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist for a playlist. The software choice is only part of the job: sustaining 4K at 60 fps also depends on a compatible encoder, a reliable upload connection, and YouTube’s current ingest settings.
Which Linux option fits your stream?
| Option | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio Media Source | Looping one local video file | OBS documents the Media Source and its Loop control on Linux. Encoding performance depends on your computer and its configuration. OBS Media Sources |
| OBS Studio VLC Video Source | Looping a playlist | Requires VLC. OBS documents Loop Playlist, enabled by default; 64-bit OBS requires matching 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources |
| OBS hardware encoder | Reducing CPU encoding work where supported | This is an encoder choice inside OBS, not a separate looping app. NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync availability depends on hardware and drivers. OBS Hardware Encoding |
| YouTube HLS ingest | Advanced, high-resolution workflows where higher latency is acceptable | Requires a specific media format and delivery structure; RTMP/RTMPS is the simpler starting point for a standard OBS setup. YouTube encoder settings |
This is a workflow-fit recommendation based on documented features, not a benchmark showing OBS to be the fastest or most reliable choice on every Linux system. There is no controlled head-to-head performance comparison here between OBS and FFmpeg.
Set up a looping video in OBS
For one video file
- Install and open OBS Studio for your Linux system, then create or select the scene you want to use.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Choose your local video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties and confirm the preview plays through and restarts as expected.
OBS documents Media Source playback and Loop for Linux. Available formats and playback behavior can still depend on the file and the libraries in your system. OBS Media Sources
For a playlist
- Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video Source from the Sources panel.
- Load your playlist, check the Loop Playlist setting, and test transitions and audio between items before going live.
OBS documents playlist playback through its VLC source and says Loop Playlist is enabled by default. Check the setting rather than assuming it remains enabled. OBS Media Sources

Configure OBS for YouTube 4K at 60 fps
Set video output and encoder
- In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60 fps if your system can sustain that output.
- Open Settings > Output, select the streaming output settings, and choose an encoder and bitrate appropriate for the codec you plan to send.
- Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it.
- Use a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes that setting. YouTube currently recommends two seconds and gives a maximum of four seconds.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, with CBR and a two-second recommended keyframe interval. Its table can change, so verify the live guidance when configuring OBS. YouTube encoder settings
Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain
| Codec | YouTube’s recommended video bitrate at 4K/2160p 60 fps | Stated lower bound |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are the figures in YouTube’s opened encoder-settings table as accessed in 2026; they are video bitrate figures, not a promise that every Linux encoder supports every codec. In particular, the H.264 4K60 recommendation has appeared differently in a search-result snippet. Use the current table on YouTube’s page rather than older snippets or forum advice. - Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to your intended broadcast. The connection must sustain the selected video bitrate plus audio and normal network variation.
- Do not treat YouTube’s lower bound as a recommended target. Choose a bitrate your connection can maintain consistently; YouTube does not publish one universal headroom figure for every network.
- 4K60 is demanding for both upload capacity and encoding hardware. If the stream drops frames or loses connection, test a lower bitrate or resolution before the actual broadcast.
Select an encoder your Linux system supports
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync hardware-encoding options on Linux, but the available choices depend on the GPU or CPU generation, drivers, and installed software. Hardware encoding can shift work away from the CPU; older hardware generations may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. Compare the codecs available on your system and test sustained performance rather than assuming a particular encoder or GPU will work best. OBS Hardware Encoding
Test the stream before broadcasting
- Run a private or otherwise controlled test through YouTube Studio before scheduling a public broadcast.
- Use representative movement and audio—not only a still image or silent segment. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube encoder settings
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS statistics for dropped frames, rendering lag, encoding lag, and connection problems.
- Let the source play across a loop boundary. Confirm it restarts cleanly, the audio does not cut unexpectedly, and playlist items transition as intended.
- Account for latency: YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K streams, which use normal latency. YouTube encoder settings
Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Looping a file does not grant rights to its video or audio. Before streaming, confirm you have permission to use every component, including music, footage, images, and any third-party material. YouTube can interrupt or restrict a live stream that violates copyright rules. Repeatedly broadcasting material you do not own or have rights to use can also create channel-policy and monetization risks; check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content rather than assuming a loop is exempt.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Video does not repeat | Loop is unchecked, or the wrong source type is being used. | For a single file, reopen Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist in the VLC source. |
| Playlist items do not play or VLC source is unavailable | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC for Linux and match its 64-bit or 32-bit architecture to OBS; reload the source and playlist. |
| Dropped frames or stream-health warnings | The upload connection cannot consistently sustain the selected bitrate, or the connection is unstable. | Retest upload capacity, reduce bitrate or output resolution, and test again under representative network conditions. |
| Encoding lag or high system load | The CPU or selected encoder cannot sustain 4K60. | Try a supported hardware encoder, check drivers, or reduce resolution or frame rate. Validate output quality and stability in a test stream. |
| YouTube rejects or struggles with the ingest | Encoder, bitrate, keyframe interval, or protocol settings do not match current YouTube guidance. | Recheck YouTube’s current codec and bitrate table, use CBR where applicable, and set a two-second keyframe interval if available. |
| Delay is higher than expected | 4K streams use normal latency; YouTube low latency is unavailable at 4K. | Plan for normal latency or consider whether a lower resolution is more important than retaining 4K. |
When HLS is worth considering
YouTube HLS ingest is an advanced option for high-quality or high-resolution workflows when greater latency is acceptable. YouTube specifies M2TS-muxed audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, HTTPS, playlists, and media segments. That protocol-level setup is more involved than selecting YouTube RTMP/RTMPS in a normal OBS workflow. YouTube encoder settings
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than learning to operate a Linux broadcaster, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
