OBS Studio is the best-supported starting point on Linux for streaming gameplay to YouTube while recording locally and saving recent action with its Replay Buffer. These are separate outputs: configure and test the live stream, recording, and replay-save hotkey independently. OBS can reconnect after a dropped connection, but that does not make a Linux PC a guaranteed unattended 24/7 service; the whole setup still depends on the computer, session, power, network, and YouTube stream health.
There are two different meanings of “gaming replay channel.” If you mean live gameplay with clips saved as you play, use OBS as described below. If you mean a continuous YouTube stream made from prerecorded gameplay videos, a cloud loop service such as StreamNeo is a different option: it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera or game capture.
What OBS can do for a Linux gaming channel
OBS Studio combines scene-based capture, YouTube streaming, local recording, and an optional Replay Buffer. A scene can collect the game, microphone, desktop or game audio, overlays, and other sources; streaming sends the live output to YouTube, while recording saves a local file. The Replay Buffer holds recent footage temporarily so you can save a clip with a hotkey. A saved clip is a local recording, not an automatically uploaded YouTube video.
Install OBS using the method supported by your Linux distribution and verify the installed build recognizes the encoder you intend to use. The available hardware encoders depend on the GPU generation, driver installation, and OBS build. This guide does not assume one distribution or prescribe a universal boot-service setup.

Set up OBS for live gameplay, recording, and replay clips
-
Build and test a gameplay scene
In OBS, create a scene and add the source for your game, then add the microphone and game or desktop audio sources you need. A capture card is only relevant when bringing in a console or another computer; it is not inherently required for capturing a game running on the same PC. Check that the game image, audio levels, and any overlays appear as expected before configuring a long session.
-
Choose canvas, output resolution, and frame rate
The base canvas is the working layout for your scene. The scaled output resolution is what OBS sends in the stream and can also govern recording, depending on the output configuration. Choose an output resolution and frame rate your system can sustain while the game is running. Sixty frames per second can place more load on the system than 30 fps, so test with representative gameplay rather than an idle desktop.
-
Configure YouTube ingest settings
Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube’s guidance inspected on 2026-10-03 recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS. Its published H.264 video bitrate recommendations include:

Select a Linux encoder with enough headroom
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync support on Linux, subject to the hardware, drivers, and build available on the system. Check the encoder choices actually shown by your installed OBS. A hardware encoder may reduce CPU load, but it is not automatically the best choice for every GPU or game; older hardware generations can have lower performance impact at a quality cost. Compare available options by YouTube compatibility, visual quality at the chosen bitrate, game and encoder headroom, and compatibility with your local editing tools.
For OBS 31.0, the NVENC “Ultra High Quality” tuning is described as intended for live-action artifacts such as camera noise, not gaming, and as significantly reducing throughput. It is not a suitable default for a gaming stream.

Enable local recording in a resilient format
For sustained local capture, OBS recommends MKV as its default for most use cases. If recording is interrupted, an unfinished MKV remains playable or recoverable; a directly recorded MP4 or MOV may be unusable if the file was not finalized. MP4/MOV can be more compatible with editing software and platforms, while fragmented MP4/MOV can improve resilience with broader compatibility than MKV when the chosen codecs and editing workflow support it. Record in a resilient format first, then remux or convert if your next step requires another container.

OBS’s format guide recommends the best available hardware encoder for high-quality local recording and ranks AV1 above HEVC above H.264 for its stated quality/file-size advice. That guide, dated 2023-03-26, cites recent AMD RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40, and Intel Arc hardware as examples of AV1-capable classes; those examples are not a complete current compatibility list. It also notes that real-time AV1 software encoding requires a high-end CPU. Check both the encoder options on your hardware and whether your archive or editor can handle the resulting files.
-
Turn on Replay Buffer and assign a save hotkey
Enable Replay Buffer in OBS’s output settings, choose how much recent footage to keep, and assign a keyboard shortcut for saving the current buffer. OBS exposes separate hotkeys to start, stop, and save the buffer. Choose a save shortcut that will not conflict with the game, and test that it writes a playable clip to the expected recording location. Buffer length, resolution, codec, and available memory/storage affect how practical the setting is; no single duration or storage capacity is established for all PCs.
-
Review reconnect behavior and test the complete session
OBS lists automatic reconnect as an available setting. Review it for a long-running stream, then test what happens when connectivity is interrupted. Reconnect behavior cannot ensure uninterrupted broadcast: Linux session restarts, power loss, network failure, game crashes, and YouTube ingest problems remain possible. Test the complete arrangement—including game, recording, replay saving, network, and YouTube health—before leaving it unattended.

Can OBS run 24/7 at Linux boot?
OBS supports the capture and stream workflow, but the available documentation does not establish one universal, resilient method to launch it as a background service at boot across Linux distributions and desktop environments. Startup behavior is a separate operations problem: it depends on the distribution, graphical session, GPU access, login behavior, audio devices, and restart policy. Do not assume that adding OBS to an autostart list is equivalent to a tested, unattended broadcast service.
If continuous operation matters, validate startup after a reboot, recovery after a network interruption, recording destination capacity, and whether the stream returns to the intended YouTube event. Keep a separate plan for the Linux host and network; OBS reconnect is useful but is not an uptime guarantee.
Troubleshoot common failures
- OBS cannot connect to YouTube: verify the selected destination and stream key, confirm the key belongs to the intended event, and check network access and YouTube stream health. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube rather than continuing to use it.
- The stream stutters or drops frames: test a lower output resolution or frame rate, compare the selected bitrate with available upload capacity, and check whether the game and encoder have sufficient headroom. Confirm CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, then retest with real gameplay motion.
- The game appears but has no sound: inspect the selected audio sources and their meters in OBS, then make a test recording or stream. Confirm the intended microphone and game audio are routed to the output.
- The replay hotkey saves nothing: confirm Replay Buffer is running, the save hotkey is assigned, the shortcut is not intercepted by the game, and the output location is writable. Test a short buffer save before relying on it.
- A recording is damaged after a crash: direct MP4/MOV recordings may not finalize if interrupted. Use MKV or a supported fragmented format for capture that must survive interruptions, and verify the file before deleting source footage.
- OBS cannot start after reboot or does not resume the stream: treat this as a host/session startup issue, not a codec setting. Test the startup method for your particular distribution, graphical session, GPU access, and YouTube event, and do not count on an untested setup for unattended operation.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a 24/7 YouTube channel built from prerecorded gameplay videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a Linux gaming PC on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not capture live gameplay or provide OBS’s local Replay Buffer, so use the OBS workflow above when you need clips from a game as you play.
- Upload the gameplay recording or build a playlist.
- Add the YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; the cloud service loops the uploaded videos.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. StreamNeo attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans, or start the free first day.
