For listening to an existing YouTube music livestream on Linux, start with mpv and a current, compatible yt-dlp installation. mpv’s documented ytdl hook can open supported website URLs, and it can repeat playlist entries. Neither feature makes playback a guaranteed 24/7 service: your computer, internet connection, YouTube, and the live source can still interrupt it.
If by “stream” you mean broadcasting your own music channel around the clock, a desktop audio player is not the right tool to keep the broadcast online. See the broadcasting option below.
Why mpv is the best fit for listening to a YouTube livestream
mpv is a practical first choice when you want to open a supported YouTube URL directly, automate playback, or use a lightweight player rather than manage a music library. Its stable manual documents a ytdl hook for supported website URLs and lists yt-dlp among the executable names it can use. The hook depends on that external tool, so keep it installed and compatible as website handling changes. mpv manual
This recommendation is about URL handling and automation, not proven endurance. There is no established hands-on 24/7 test or authoritative comparative reliability benchmark here. A player can repeat a playlist, but that is different from guaranteeing uninterrupted playback of an active YouTube livestream.

Looping is not uptime
mpv’s playlist loop setting repeats entries in a playlist. It does not restart a disconnected livestream, keep a network connection alive, prevent the computer from sleeping, or ensure YouTube continues serving the source. A single live URL is also not a queue of finished tracks that can simply be replayed when the broadcast ends.
Watch for buffering during livestream playback
The mpv manual warns that livestream data can build up when playback is paused, runs at a slightly lower rate, or encounters related playback conditions. Avoid leaving a live stream paused for long periods; if playback falls behind or behaves unexpectedly, resume or reopen it and check the connection. mpv manual

VLC is a reasonable alternative if a graphical general-purpose player matters more than mpv’s direct URL workflow. Strawberry is a better fit for a local collection and radio listening. Set up mpv for a YouTube music livestream
- Install mpv and yt-dlp. Use the package manager for your Linux distribution or the projects’ official installation instructions. Ensure
yt-dlpis available as an executable; mpv’s ytdl hook depends on it or another supported executable. - Open the livestream URL. Run
mpv 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID', replacing the example URL with the actual livestream URL. The ytdl hook handles supported website URLs; a URL that no longer resolves or is not supported may fail. - Use a playlist only if you mean to repeat multiple entries. mpv’s playlist loop option can repeat a playlist, for example
mpv --loop-playlist=inf playlist.m3u. This repeats playlist entries; it does not provide recovery or uninterrupted playback of a livestream. - Keep the host available. Prevent the computer from sleeping, maintain a stable network connection, and expect that YouTube, the live source, or the player may interrupt playback. Those are outside the playlist loop’s control.
- Refresh the URL handler when it stops working. If a previously supported YouTube URL no longer opens, check that yt-dlp is installed and current, then retry. Website changes can require updates to the external URL-handling tool.

Common problems and fixes
- The URL does not open: confirm the URL is valid and publicly playable, then verify that yt-dlp is installed and available to mpv. Update yt-dlp if YouTube handling has changed.
- Playback stops or reconnects: check the internet connection and whether the YouTube broadcast itself is still live. Playlist looping does not reconnect a failed live source.
- Playback is behind the live broadcast: avoid pausing for extended periods. Resume or reopen the stream; the mpv manual notes that livestream data can build up under some playback conditions.
- Playback ends after a while: check system sleep and power settings, and remember that a local player depends on the computer and its connection staying available.
If you mean running your own 24/7 music broadcast
Listening to someone else’s YouTube livestream and broadcasting your own music are different jobs. A desktop player such as mpv plays media locally; it does not by itself keep a YouTube channel live. Before broadcasting music, confirm that you have the necessary rights and permissions.
