For a Linux desktop workflow, start with OBS Studio’s Media Source and enable Loop for one prerecorded video. For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist and install VLC. If you need a headless command-line setup, mpv can loop playback indefinitely, but it is not by itself the encoder and connection that send a live stream to YouTube. There is no sourced benchmark establishing one option as the lightest for every machine.
Which Linux option fits your stream?
| Option | Best fit | What it does | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio Media Source | One local video with a graphical interface | OBS is available on Linux, and its Media Source has a Loop setting for a local file. OBS Project documentation | The documented feature does not establish that OBS is the lightest choice or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. |
| OBS Studio VLC Video source | A playlist of local videos | Provides a Loop Playlist option when VLC is installed. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; a 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC. OBS Project documentation | Requires VLC as an additional dependency; no controlled resource comparison is established. |
| mpv | Minimal-interface or command-line playback | The command-line media player’s manual documents infinite looping. Its project notes that hardware decoding can help when CPU decoding is too slow, but hardware decoding must be enabled. mpv manual · mpv project | Playback alone is not a complete YouTube live-ingest workflow. No comparative CPU or RAM figures are established. |
| VLC | General media playback or the OBS playlist source | Cross-platform media player and framework; OBS can expose its VLC source when VLC is installed. OBS Project documentation · VideoLAN documentation | The cited documentation does not establish VLC as a uniquely lightweight 24/7 encoder. |
| FFmpeg | Headless stream encoding and transport | A relevant tool category for building a command-line streaming pipeline. | It is not a player, and no tested command or load comparison is established here. Unattended recovery also requires process supervision and monitoring. |
Choose by workflow, not an unverified “lightest” label
- One video and a GUI: begin with OBS Media Source and enable Loop.
- A playlist: use the OBS VLC Video source and Loop Playlist, with a VLC build that matches OBS’s architecture.
- A headless Linux machine: treat playback and streaming as separate jobs. mpv can loop the media; a streaming/encoding tool such as FFmpeg must handle the output path. Confirm the pipeline, supervision, and monitoring for your system.
- Local playback only: VLC or mpv may be enough. Sending the video to YouTube requires an encoder connection as well.
Understand the full YouTube live-stream pipeline
A repeating player is only one part of a live broadcast. You need an application or pipeline that sends encoded video and audio to YouTube. OBS combines media sources with streaming controls for a graphical workflow; a headless setup commonly uses FFmpeg for encoding and transport. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key, with configuration and preview in Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
Prepare the channel and stream key
YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. In Live Control Room, configure the stream and use the server URL and stream key supplied for the broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. For a scheduled broadcast, check the preview in Live Control Room before going live. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming · YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
Set output quality to match the upload connection
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate according to the source and the sustained upload capacity available to the streaming machine. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; its general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance says not to exceed four seconds. The listed video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. Use settings your actual encoder supports, and check YouTube’s current table before configuring a broadcast. The following are examples from YouTube’s encoder settings table, accessed October 3, 2026. They are ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will remain stable. Leave upload headroom and test the actual setup.
| Output | Codec | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These values are resolution-, frame-rate-, and codec-specific. A faster connection does not remove the need to monitor stream health; YouTube recommends testing and checking the health messages during a broadcast. YouTube Help: Encoder settings for live streaming · YouTube Help: Live streaming tips

Headless Linux: separate playback from streaming
mpv’s manual documents infinite looping, which makes it a playback candidate for a command-line machine. That does not itself send an encoded live stream to YouTube. Build and validate a separate encoding-and-transport pipeline, commonly using FFmpeg, against your source’s actual video and audio codecs, the encoder’s supported settings, and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. No tested universal FFmpeg command is established here, so avoid copying a command without verifying its input, codecs, output settings, and stream destination.
If CPU decoding is too slow, mpv’s project documentation says hardware decoding may help and must be explicitly enabled. Whether it works depends on the hardware and configuration; test playback and encoding load on the actual machine. Plan how the processes will be supervised and restarted, and how stream health will be checked. A player or encoder process that remains open does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast. mpv manual · mpv project · YouTube Help: Live streaming tips

Plan for monitoring, archives, and YouTube rules
Test the whole chain before leaving it unattended
- Use representative video and audio, including playlist transitions if applicable.
- Confirm the Live Control Room preview and check stream-health messages; do not assume a running player means the public stream is healthy.
- Monitor both audio and video after going live.
- If you need a local recording, confirm it is being created and growing before relying on it as a backup.
- Use media you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s copyright rules apply to live broadcasts as well as other uploads; permission to use a recording is separate from the technical ability to loop it. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips · YouTube Help: Copyright on YouTube
Do not rely on a complete 24-hour YouTube archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. These are platform caveats, not a guarantee that every shorter broadcast will archive successfully. If preserving the full program matters, plan a local recording or shorter sessions and verify current YouTube behavior. YouTube Help: Archive live streams · YouTube Help: Use DVR on live streams

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The local video plays, but YouTube does not show a live feed | Playback is working but the encoder-to-YouTube connection is not configured or healthy. | Check the server URL and stream key in the encoder, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and health messages. Keep the stream key private. |
| OBS does not offer the VLC Video source or playlist | VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. | Install VLC matching the OBS build; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| The playlist stops after one pass | Playlist looping may not be enabled. | Open VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist; test the transition between files. |
| Video stutters or stream health degrades | The machine may be struggling to decode or encode, or the sustained upload may not support the selected output. | Check CPU and encoder load, reduce output demands if needed, leave network headroom, and compare the chosen codec/resolution/frame rate with YouTube’s bitrate guidance. Hardware decoding is an option to test where supported. |
| A broadcast ends or the stream is no longer healthy while the player remains open | The playback process and the YouTube connection are separate parts of the pipeline; an open player does not ensure a healthy ingest. | Check the encoder process, network, and Live Control Room health messages. For a headless setup, configure supervision and monitoring rather than assuming automatic recovery. |
| A long broadcast has no complete archive or usable rewind | YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. | Keep a local recording if retention matters, or plan shorter sessions; check current YouTube guidance. |
