If you want a ready-made server monitor that still fits a Python workflow, start with Glances: it offers terminal and web views, remote monitoring, and programmatic access. For host metrics you need to retain and query over time, use Prometheus with Node Exporter. For checks that answer whether websites, ports, DNS records, or other endpoints are reachable, choose Uptime Kuma.
These tools solve overlapping but distinct problems. “Lightweight” may mean fewer components or less configuration; the cited documentation does not provide comparable resource benchmarks to establish which uses the least CPU or memory.
How to choose a server-monitoring alternative
First decide what signal you need. A host monitor reports the machine’s resources, such as CPU, memory, filesystem, and network activity. An availability checker reports whether a service or endpoint responds. A time-series system stores metrics so you can query history and build alert rules.
- Monitoring scope: host resources, endpoint availability, or both.
- Deployment shape: one interactive tool, an exporter plus a metrics server, or a self-hosted web application.
- History and queries: a current view or up/down result may be enough; retained metrics support investigation and flexible queries.
- Integration: consider Python or REST access, exporter compatibility, notifications, and status pages.
- Operational exposure: protect web interfaces and carefully limit access to privileged integrations.
Glances: compact host visibility with Python access
Glances documentation describes a cross-platform monitor with a curses-based terminal interface and a web interface. It supports client/server operation for remote monitoring, can export statistics to files or external databases, and provides APIs for Python scripts and other applications. That combination makes it a natural first option when replacing a custom host display or collector while keeping a programmatic path.

The project describes Glances as “a cross-platform monitoring tool that aims to present maximum information in minimal space through either a curses-based or Web-based interface.” Treat that as the project’s description, not an independent resource-use comparison. Check the documented deployment and protection settings for your environment before exposing its web service.
Prometheus with Node Exporter: host metrics you can retain and query
Prometheus’s Node Exporter guide describes a two-part pattern: run Node Exporter on the machine being monitored, then configure Prometheus to scrape the exporter. Node Exporter exposes machine-level metrics; Prometheus supplies collection and time-series storage and querying. The guide calls Node Exporter a single static binary and shows examples including CPU time, available filesystem bytes, and network receive traffic.

Prometheus notes that “The Prometheus Node Exporter exposes a wide variety of hardware- and kernel-related metrics.” Its guide gives a 15-second scrape interval as an example, not a universal recommendation or performance result. This approach is useful when history, queries, and alert rules matter, but it involves more components than a single interactive monitor.
For additional integrations, distinguish official exporters from third-party contributions. Prometheus’s exporter documentation says the project cannot vet every third-party exporter; assess an integration’s maintenance and trustworthiness before adding it. The Node Exporter guide also points to an analogous Windows exporter for Windows monitoring, so consult current platform-specific installation guidance rather than assuming the Unix instructions apply unchanged.

Uptime Kuma: endpoint reachability and notifications
Uptime Kuma focuses on whether services are available. Its documented checks include HTTP(S), TCP, HTTP keyword and JSON, WebSocket, ping, DNS records, push monitoring, Steam game servers, and Docker containers. The project also lists notifications, multiple status pages, certificate information, proxy support, and two-factor authentication.
This is a good fit for uptime visibility and basic alerting, not a substitute for detailed host-resource time-series monitoring. The project README documents Docker as a deployment route and lists Node.js 20.4 or later for non-Docker installation; check the current README for requirements before deploying because they can change.

Protect Docker access when monitoring containers
Uptime Kuma’s Docker-monitor guide warns that exposing the Docker socket or TCP port gives Uptime Kuma full control over the host’s Docker daemon. Minimize daemon access and do not expose Uptime Kuma to the internet when using this monitor type.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option fits your use case?
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A compact host overview and Python or REST integration | Glances | Terminal and web views, remote client/server operation, exports, and APIs are documented. |
| Stored host metrics, queries, and alert rules | Prometheus with Node Exporter | Node Exporter provides host metrics; Prometheus scrapes and stores time series for querying. |
| Endpoint checks, uptime notifications, and status pages | Uptime Kuma | It offers varied service and endpoint checks plus notification and status-page features. |
| Both host-resource history and external-service availability | Combine a host-metrics tool with an endpoint checker | They provide different signals; add both only if you need both. |
What “lightweight” means in practice
For fewer moving parts, Glances is the most direct fit among these choices: it is a packaged monitor with multiple viewing modes and Python access. Prometheus with Node Exporter adds a scraper and a time-series server in exchange for retained, queryable metrics. Uptime Kuma is a separate web application centered on availability checks. Those deployment differences are documented; comparable CPU or memory measurements are not, so choose based on workload and operational needs rather than an unsupported claim that one is the measured resource winner.
