For most glass display cabinets, low-voltage LED strips in an aluminum channel with a diffuser are the best overall choice. They produce a continuous, even wash of light with little fixture heat. Choose dimmable puck lights instead when you want separate pools of light, easier point-by-point aiming, or a simpler retrofit. In either case, use the specified low voltage and driver, keep the driver ventilated and accessible, and select color temperature (CCT) and color-rendering index (CRI) for the objects on display.

LED strips or puck lights: the quick decision

The cabinet’s shape and the way you want objects to look determine the better fixture. Strips are continuous linear sources; pucks are individual optical sources. Neither is automatically safer or better if installed with the wrong driver, trapped heat, excessive glare or unsuitable color.

Decision factor LED strips LED puck lights
Illumination pattern Continuous line of light; smooth, even coverage along a shelf or side. Discrete pools or spots; overlapping several pucks reduces dark gaps.
Best use Books, models, glassware and collectibles that should be evenly visible from top to bottom. Accent displays, single objects, or cabinets where you want each shelf or item highlighted.
Glare control Aluminum profile and diffuser hide LED points and soften reflections; dimming is useful. Lens, beam angle, mounting position and aiming determine whether a bright spot reflects in the glass.
Typical wiring One continuous run or several linked sections to a low-voltage driver; corners may need connectors. Several parallel leads or a manufacturer harness to a low-voltage driver.
Heat management Aluminum profile spreads heat from the strip; driver must remain ventilated. Aluminum housing helps conduct heat away from each puck; driver still needs ventilation.
Visual flexibility Can run vertically on front edges or horizontally under shelves; easy to dim as one zone. Can be spaced, aimed or assigned to separate zones for accent effects.

If you are unsure, start with strips for general illumination and add dimming. Pucks become the better answer when the cabinet is shallow, the contents are arranged as focal objects, or a continuous strip would be visible from normal viewing angles.

Why LED heat is still a safety issue

LEDs run cooler than incandescent lamps, but “cool” does not mean heat-free. Electrical power becomes heat in the LED board, solder joints, driver and dimmer. Heat accumulates faster in a sealed cabinet, especially above a warm room or in a dark enclosure with no air movement.

The Canadian Conservation Institute explains the difference in its Technical Bulletin 36 on LED lighting in museums and art galleries: “LED lamps produce much less heat than incandescent lamps, such as infrared in the light beam (zero with LEDs) and heat from the fixture (1/3 or even less).” The “one-third or less” figure is a comparison with incandescent fixture heat, not a guarantee that every LED installation stays at a particular temperature.

For collectibles, the reduction in infrared radiation is valuable because the light beam does not add the same radiant heating associated with incandescent sources. You still need to follow the fixture’s operating-temperature and enclosure instructions. A driver hidden in a tight cavity can become the hottest component even when the LEDs themselves appear cool.

What to keep cool

  • Driver: Leave air around it, do not bury it under insulation, and mount it where you can reach it for service.
  • Dimmer: Use a dimmer rated for the chosen LED driver and load. An incompatible dimmer can flicker, buzz or overheat.
  • Strip board: Use an aluminum profile when the strip instructions call for heat spreading. The profile gives the adhesive-backed board a thermal path and a straight mounting surface.
  • Connections: Insulate solder joints and connectors, and keep cables away from hinges, moving doors and sharp glass edges.

When LED strips are the best choice

Strips are the most reliable way to remove bright and dark bands inside a cabinet. A vertical strip at the front of each side stile can wash light across multiple shelves; a strip under the front edge of each shelf can put light on the object below without a lamp shining directly into the viewer’s eyes.

The Häfele LOOX LED Design Guide describes light strips as providing “smooth, even lighting.” The listed system uses aluminum construction and a milk lens, offers warm and cool options, and includes built-in dimmer options. The same guide lists a CRI of 82 and an efficacy of 85 lumens per watt for the referenced strips. Those figures apply to the listed LOOX products, not to every strip sold under the LED name.

Strip layouts that work

  • Front verticals: Place a diffused strip near each front side edge to light the full height. Angle the profile toward the back to reduce a direct reflection in the door.
  • Under-shelf runs: Install a short run beneath each shelf’s front edge. This works well for objects arranged in rows and keeps the light source out of the top of the viewer’s sightline.
  • Rear vertical: A rear strip creates a brighter backdrop and silhouette effect. Use it for display pieces that do not need front-facing color accuracy.
  • Top perimeter: A top run can illuminate the cabinet, but it may create a bright reflection on a glass top or door. A diffuser and a lower dim level are usually necessary.

Do not bend a strip tighter than its specified minimum radius, cut it anywhere other than the marked cut points, or exceed the driver’s maximum load. If a long run is dim at the far end, use a manufacturer-approved feed or split the run rather than raising the supply voltage beyond specification.

When puck lights are the better choice

Puck lights make sense when you want a small pool of light directly over each object, when shelves make continuous strips difficult to conceal, or when you are retrofitting a cabinet without removing trim. Their round housings can be surface-mounted or recessed, and each puck can be positioned to avoid a particular reflection.

As a concrete display-case example, National Specialty Lighting’s 2023 catalog lists puck lights rated at 24 V DC, 3000 K, more than 90 CRI and 200 lumens. The listed units use die-cast aluminum housings and have an operating range of −30 °C to 40 °C. These are product specifications for that cataloged range; verify the exact model and current installation instructions before buying.

Spacing and aiming pucks

  1. Place one puck near the front third of a shelf rather than at the extreme rear. This usually lights the object’s face instead of its shadow.
  2. For a wide shelf, use two or more pucks and overlap their beams. The goal is even coverage at the object plane, not equal spacing on the ceiling of the cabinet.
  3. Angle or rotate each puck until the reflected bright spot moves out of the normal viewing line through the glass.
  4. Use separate dimming zones when one shelf contains light-colored objects and another contains dark or reflective pieces.

A puck’s lumen rating does not tell you how evenly a cabinet will look. Beam spread, distance to the object and the color of the interior determine the result. Two 200-lumen pucks can look very different if one has a narrow optic and the other has a wide lens.

Choose color temperature and CRI for the collection

Color temperature is expressed in kelvins (K). ENERGY STAR explains in its downlight criteria that 2700–3000 K appears warmer than 4000 K. Warm light can make wood, brass and skin tones feel richer; neutral 4000 K can make white ceramics and modern metal finishes appear cleaner. The cabinet’s existing room lighting matters too: a 3000 K cabinet in a 4000 K room will look visibly warmer.

CRI describes the degree of color shift objects undergo under a light source, according to ENERGY STAR. A higher CRI is preferable when you need to distinguish paint, fabric, gemstones, food-safe ceramics or artwork. The puck example above is specified at CRI greater than 90, while the cited Häfele strip specification is CRI 82. Do not assume that a higher kelvin number means better color rendering; CCT and CRI measure different properties.

A practical selection guide

Collection or room Starting CCT CRI target Reason
Warm wood, antiques, brass 2700–3000 K 90 or higher when available Preserves warm tones without a blue cast.
Mixed household display 3000–3500 K 90 or higher for critical colors Balances warmth and neutral whites.
White ceramics, glass and contemporary metal Around 4000 K 90 or higher for accurate finishes Separates whites and gives a crisper appearance.
Backlit silhouettes or decorative effects Choose for the mood Less critical if objects are not viewed for color accuracy Brightness and glare control matter more than faithful color.

Use one CCT throughout a cabinet unless a deliberate two-zone effect is intended. Mixing 2700 K and 4000 K on adjacent shelves often makes the cabinet look patchy rather than layered.

Control glare and reflections in glass

Glass doors reflect the brightest surface in the room. A bare strip can show individual LED dots; a puck can appear as a hard circular reflection. Glare is a selection issue even with LEDs. The Canadian Conservation Institute notes that compatible dimmers are needed and says, “If you plan to use strip LEDs in display cases where adjustment of intensity is critical, dimmers become especially important.”

Four ways to reduce glare

  • Diffuse the source: Use a milk or frosted lens over a strip. The Häfele example combines aluminum with a milk lens, which hides point sources and softens the line.
  • Change the angle: Aim a profile or puck toward the cabinet’s rear wall rather than straight through the door.
  • Increase distance: Move a source farther from the glass when possible. A larger distance spreads the reflection and reduces the apparent intensity of a single point.
  • Dim after closing the door: Set brightness with the cabinet closed and viewed from the normal standing position. A level that looks modest with the door open may be glaring through the glass.

Do not rely on a diffuser to fix an overpowered installation. Lowering output with a correctly matched dimmer reduces both glare and heat while preserving the desired color.

Electrical and thermal requirements

Match every component: strip or puck voltage, driver output, dimmer type, connector polarity and total wattage. A 24 V DC puck requires a 24 V DC driver; do not connect it to a mains-voltage supply or to a driver intended for a different voltage. Select a driver whose rated capacity exceeds the calculated load by the margin specified by the manufacturer, and avoid combining products that use incompatible constant-current and constant-voltage systems.

Driver placement

  • Mount the driver outside the cabinet when practical, in a ventilated, accessible location.
  • If it must be inside, follow its enclosure and operating-temperature instructions and leave the required air space around it.
  • Keep the driver and dimmer away from damp areas and from locations where a leaking display container could reach them.
  • Provide strain relief so opening the door cannot pull on a low-voltage connector.

Low voltage reduces shock risk on the cabinet side, but the driver’s input remains connected to mains electricity. Have a qualified electrician handle any new mains wiring, concealed receptacle or junction-box work required by local code.

Step-by-step: install an LED strip safely

  1. Map the cabinet. Measure each run, note shelf positions and identify where the door, hinges and glass edges move. Decide whether the strip will face forward, sideways or toward the rear.
  2. Choose a compatible system. Confirm strip voltage, wattage per metre or foot, CCT, CRI, cut marks, minimum bend radius and whether the strip is approved for the intended enclosure. Select an aluminum profile and diffuser if required by the strip or if you need thermal spreading and glare control.
  3. Size and locate the driver. Add the wattage of all runs, select the specified low-voltage driver, and place it where air can circulate and where you can reach it. Leave room for the dimmer and connectors.
  4. Dry-fit everything. Temporarily hold the profiles, route cables and close the door. Look for reflections from normal viewing positions before removing adhesive backing.
  5. Cut only at marked points. Deburr or cap the profile, observe polarity, and use approved soldered joints or connectors. Insulate every connection.
  6. Mount the profile. Secure it with the manufacturer’s clips or screws when available. Clean the mounting surface, press the strip into the channel and install the diffuser without pinching the board.
  7. Route cables safely. Keep wires away from hinges and sharp glass edges. Add strain relief at the profile and leave a service loop where a shelf or door needs to move.
  8. Connect the dimmer and driver. Follow the driver’s input and output markings. Do not exceed the dimmer’s rated load, and do not substitute a wall dimmer unless the driver is specifically compatible.
  9. Test before final concealment. Energize the system, run it at full and low levels, and check for flicker, buzzing, hot spots or a driver that becomes unusually hot. Test with the cabinet closed and the room lights at their normal level.
  10. Finish and document. Secure the diffuser, label the driver and keep its installation sheet with the cabinet’s maintenance records.

Step-by-step: install puck lights

  1. Mark the optical positions. Place the pucks where their beams overlap the objects, not merely at equal distances along the shelf.
  2. Check the housing and depth. Confirm whether each puck is surface-mounted or recessed and that a recess will not weaken a shelf or interfere with glass.
  3. Plan the harness. Keep low-voltage leads short enough to avoid tangles but long enough for service. Use the supplied splitter or a wiring method approved for the model.
  4. Mount without trapping heat. Use the specified screws, clips or adhesive. Do not cover ventilation surfaces or bury the die-cast housing under foam or tape.
  5. Connect to the exact voltage driver. For the cataloged example, that means 24 V DC. Confirm polarity and connector ratings before applying power.
  6. Set each aim and dimming zone. Close the cabinet, inspect reflections and adjust puck orientation before tightening mounts permanently.

Testing, troubleshooting and recovery

The strip or puck does not light

  • Turn power off and verify the driver input and low-voltage output are connected to the correct terminals.
  • Check polarity on DC connectors and inspect every cut point or solder joint.
  • Confirm the driver is receiving mains power and that its output voltage matches the fixture.
  • Bypass the dimmer only if the manufacturer’s instructions permit a direct test; an incompatible dimmer can prevent startup.

Only part of a strip is dark

Inspect the last lit cut point, connector and polarity. A damaged trace, an unapproved bend or a run longer than the driver or strip rating can open the circuit. Replace the damaged section at a marked cut point or split the run with an approved feed; never raise voltage to force the remaining LEDs brighter.

Flicker, buzzing or pulsing

Check that the dimmer type matches the driver and that the combined load is within the dimmer range. Flicker at low brightness can indicate a driver with a minimum-load requirement or an incompatible control. Replace the mismatched component rather than leaving a hot or noisy installation in service.

Hot profile, puck or driver

Switch off the system, allow it to cool and check enclosure clearance, wattage, ventilation and mounting. A warm aluminum profile can be normal because it is carrying heat away; a driver that is too hot to keep a hand on, smells of overheated plastic or repeatedly shuts down needs immediate investigation and likely replacement.

Bright reflections or visible LED dots

Add the specified diffuser, move the source farther from the glass, change its angle or reduce brightness. If dots remain visible, a higher-density strip or a profile with a deeper diffuser may be required; do not cover the LEDs with improvised materials that trap heat.

Heat-safe operating checklist

  • Use only the product’s specified low voltage and a compatible driver.
  • Keep drivers and dimmers ventilated, reachable and outside tight cavities whenever practical.
  • Use an aluminum profile for strips when thermal mounting is required, and add a diffuser to soften glare.
  • Use a dimmer designed for the selected strip, puck and driver combination.
  • Insulate connections and route cables away from hinges and sharp glass.
  • Test brightness, reflections and temperature with the cabinet closed before permanent fixing.
  • Respect the fixture’s operating-temperature and enclosure limits. The cataloged puck example is rated from −30 °C to 40 °C; other products may have different limits.
  • Inspect adhesive, connectors and cable strain at least annually, and after moving the cabinet.

Recommended configurations by cabinet type

Tall bookcase or curio cabinet

Use diffused vertical strips at the front side edges or short under-shelf runs. One dimming zone keeps brightness consistent from top to bottom; separate zones are useful when shelves contain very different materials.

Small wall-mounted cabinet

A single top strip in an aluminum profile may be enough. Keep the driver outside the cabinet if possible and dim until the glass door no longer shows a hard reflection.

Deep cabinet with a few focal objects

Use individually aimed pucks, often one per object or shelf section. Overlap beams to avoid black gaps, and choose a high-CRI model when paint, fabric or gemstones must look accurate.

Heat-sensitive or archival objects

Prefer low output, high-CRI LEDs with generous dimming range. Keep the driver outside, monitor the enclosure during the first several hours of operation, and follow the object manufacturer’s conservation guidance. LEDs reduce infrared and fixture heat compared with incandescent lighting, but they do not remove the need to control total light exposure or temperature.

Bottom line for choosing your system

Choose a low-voltage LED strip in an aluminum profile with a diffuser when uniformity, concealment and whole-cabinet illumination are priorities. Choose dimmable puck lights when you need discrete accents, independent aiming or a straightforward retrofit. The safest installation is the one that matches voltage, driver, dimmer and load, keeps heat-producing electronics ventilated, controls glare with optics and dimming, and is tested with the glass closed before it is made permanent.
