The most convincing LEGO streets come from treating the road, curb, sidewalk, and building entrance as one modular system. Use plates to establish small height changes, slopes to soften the curb, tiles to separate surfaces, and removable sections so corners, crossings, and entrances can be rearranged. LEGO Road Plates 60304 provide a fast connected layout with markings and accessories; a custom road gives you control over width, elevation, colors, and the exact fit against each building. Neither approach has been proven objectively more realistic, so choose according to your display, scale, and desired detail.

What makes a LEGO road look realistic?

Realism in a LEGO city is mostly about relationships rather than a single special element. A road should have a believable width for the vehicles and minifigures using it, a visible transition to the sidewalk, a curb that meets the building frontage cleanly, and enough variation to suggest a real urban block. Surface markings, crossings, speed bumps, street furniture, greenery, and changes in elevation reinforce that impression.

Build the street as connected modules instead of one permanent slab. Removable modules let you change a straight section into a corner, insert a crossing, add steps, or alter the display footprint without dismantling an entire district. They also make it easier to repair a loose connection or replace a color scheme later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Scale: Check the road against the vehicles, bicycles, minifigures, and building entrances you intend to use.
  • Continuity: Keep curb lines and sidewalk levels consistent from one module to the next.
  • Contrast: Distinguish asphalt, concrete, paving, and painted markings with color or texture changes.
  • Transitions: Use a raised curb and a sloped edge rather than ending a flat road abruptly at a wall.
  • Street life: Add only the signs, lights, trees, and markings that fit the scene; too many unrelated details can make the block look staged.

Choose between LEGO Road Plates and a custom street

LEGO City Road Plates 60304 is the ready-made starting point. LEGO describes the 2021 set as containing 112 pieces, including five road plates with lane markings, speed bumps, a crosswalk, glow-in-the-dark streetlights, traffic lights, road signs, trees, and greenery. The plates are designed to connect with other Road Plate sets. This is convenient when you want a recognizable road surface and accessories in one box.

A custom street is preferable when the supplied geometry does not suit your buildings or display. You can set a particular street width, create a narrow lane or broad boulevard, raise the sidewalk to match a modular building, continue a chosen tile pattern around a corner, or fit an angled road into an irregular footprint. LEGO’s own curb tutorial uses road plates as one possible connection, so a ready-made surface and a custom frontage can be combined.

Decision point Road Plates 60304 Custom modules
Initial setup Five connected road plates and accessories are supplied in a 112-piece, 2021 set. Requires selecting and assembling base bricks, plates, tiles, and slopes.
Width and footprint Follows the plate geometry; expansion is based on compatible plates. Choose the width, length, corners, crossings, and display depth yourself.
Curb and sidewalk height May need an added custom frontage to meet a building base cleanly. Set the level with stacked plates and shape the edge with slopes.
Surface detail Includes printed or molded road features described by LEGO, such as markings, speed bumps, and a crosswalk. Use tiles, color bands, markings, and removable details in any pattern.
Reconfiguration Connectable plates make broad layouts quick to rearrange. Small modules can be redesigned for steps, driveways, bike lanes, or unusual angles.
Parts sourcing One boxed set supplies the documented road elements. Buy exact element types, colors, and repeat quantities; current availability is not stated.

This is a design comparison, not a measured realism test. No controlled source establishes that one width, element, or construction method looks more realistic in every city.

Build the modular curb and sidewalk demonstrated by LEGO

LEGO’s “How to Make Curbs for Your Modular City” tutorial is designed to fit in front of one standard 32×32 modular building. It provides a reliable starting layout that you can adapt to your own colors and frontage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Make a removable 32×32 base

  1. Arrange four 16×16 bricks with holes into a 32×32 square.
  2. Join the four sections with Technic connector pegs. The pins make the base a single removable unit while preserving the modular grid.
  3. Add plates underneath for support and for the height needed by your table or display surface.

The guide also suggests 16×16 brick plates when you want more connection points between adjacent buildings. Use the exact colors shown in the tutorial only if they fit your scene; the dimensions and connection method are the useful principles.

2. Set the building-side platform

Place an eight-stud-wide platform in front of the modular building. This area becomes the sidewalk or frontage zone. Align its rear edge with the building base so doors, stairs, and shop entrances do not appear to float above or sink below the pavement.

3. Form the curb edge

Run 1×8 plates along the platform’s street-facing edge. These long elements create a continuous curb line while keeping the section easy to replace. Stack plates underneath wherever you need a small rise. LEGO explains that three plates stacked together equal the height of one standard brick, which makes plate stacks useful for controlled level changes.

4. Make the transition flush

Add sloped bricks at the curb or at the point where the raised frontage meets the lower road. A slope prevents a visually abrupt vertical wall and leaves room for a vehicle or minifigure route to read as a deliberate ramp. Use short, repeated slope sections if the frontage includes a doorway, stair, or crossing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Divide the frontage into replaceable segments

Do not make the curb one unbroken permanent strip. Segment it so one section can become a step, driveway, or crossing. The LEGO tutorial specifically notes that segmented curb sections can be changed for these purposes. Keep the segment boundaries on a repeatable grid so a replacement still lines up with the neighboring modules.

6. Connect the road

Use 2×4 tiles where the custom frontage meets road plates or another road module. The tiles provide a clean connection band and make it easier to lift a section without tearing up the entire street. Test the join with the building in place before adding decorative surface details.

How wide should a LEGO road or bike lane be?

There is no single official width that is realistic for every LEGO city. Start from the objects that must fit, then reserve space for edges and transitions. A road that looks broad beside a small car may look cramped beside a bus, while a narrow lane can be convincing in an alley or historic district.

Use the building frontage as the fixed dimension

For the documented modular example, the building occupies a 32×32 footprint and the frontage platform is eight studs deep. Treat that eight-stud platform as a sidewalk/frontage reference, not a universal sidewalk rule. If your building has a deep stoop, awning supports, or exterior stairs, allocate those features before deciding how much room remains for the road.

Add a six-stud bike lane only when the scene supports it

LEGO’s curb tutorial suggests using the remaining frontage for a six-stud-wide bike lane. That six-stud dimension belongs to the tutorial’s example; it is not a measured real-world scale conversion. Mark the lane with a contrasting tile strip or a repeated symbol, and leave a clear curb boundary so it does not merge visually with the sidewalk.

Check vehicle clearance and turning space

  • Place the widest vehicle in the intended lane before locking down the curb.
  • At corners, temporarily remove streetlights, signs, and trees to verify that a vehicle can turn without clipping them.
  • Keep lane markings centered on the usable road area rather than centered on the overall base if the sidewalk is asymmetrical.
  • For a pedestrian crossing, leave a straight path from the building entrance to the opposite sidewalk.

These checks are more reliable than copying a road width from another display because the correct proportion depends on your vehicle scale, building depth, and available table space.

Pieces that do the most work

The following parts are the core of the documented curb technique and of most custom street modules. Substitute equivalent elements when color, availability, or connection needs differ.

Element type Role in a realistic street Placement advice
16×16 bricks with holes Build the four-section structural base and accept Technic connector pegs. Use four to create the 32×32 example base; orient holes so the sections can be pinned together.
Technic friction connector pegs Join removable base sections. Install only enough to hold the module securely while still allowing deliberate separation.
16×16 plates and 16×16 brick plates Support the base and increase connection points between buildings. Use plates below the base for height and support; use brick plates where neighboring structures need more attachment.
8×8 plates Fill and reinforce platform areas. Combine them under the eight-stud frontage to avoid large unsupported spans.
1×8 plates Create a long, readable curb line. Run them along the platform edge and break the line at crossings or steps.
1×8 and 2×4 tiles Make smooth curb caps, road joins, and removable surface bands. Use 2×4 tiles at connections to road plates; use long tiles where a continuous sidewalk edge is wanted.
1×4 tiles and 1×4 bricks Add smaller texture bands, borders, and structural fill. Alternate them to create paving patterns without losing the grid.
Sloped bricks Soften the change between the raised sidewalk and lower road. Repeat the same slope length so transitions look intentional across modules.
Plates in several thicknesses Fine-tune curb, sidewalk, and road levels. Remember that three plates equal one brick in height; count stacks before adding a full brick.

Use plates, tiles, and slopes to show separate surfaces

Plates for height

Plates are thinner than bricks, so they let you raise a sidewalk or curb in small increments. A one-plate change can be enough to catch light and separate asphalt from paving; a three-plate stack reaches one brick height. Keep the same stack height on adjoining modules unless a step or ramp is intentional.

Tiles for a smooth walking surface

Tiles remove studs from areas that should read as concrete, paving, or asphalt. A border of 1×4 tiles can frame a sidewalk, while 2×4 tiles can form a repeatable road-connection strip. Leave selected studs exposed where you need to attach signs, benches, trees, or removable barriers.

Slopes for curb ramps and entrances

A slope is most useful at a transition: the street edge, a driveway, or a building entrance. Align the top of the slope with the sidewalk and its lower end with the road or crossing. If a doorway needs stairs, replace only the relevant curb segment rather than lowering the entire frontage.

Build a custom road module step by step

  1. Measure the scene. Put the modular building, widest vehicle, and any planned bike lane on the table. Mark the maximum frontage and turning envelope.
  2. Choose a module grid. A 16-stud increment works naturally with the documented base elements. Select a repeat length that lets corners and crossings land on boundaries.
  3. Construct the structural base. Use 16×16 bricks or equivalent supports, connect sections with Technic pegs, and reinforce below with plates.
  4. Set the sidewalk elevation. Stack plates until the platform meets the building base. Record the stack height so the next module can match it.
  5. Lay the road surface. Use broad plates for a studded surface or tiles for a smoother appearance. Keep a removable seam at each module boundary.
  6. Add the curb. Run 1×8 plates along the street edge, interrupting them where a crossing, driveway, or step will occur.
  7. Install transitions. Place slopes between the raised platform and road. Check that doors, stairs, and vehicle paths remain clear.
  8. Connect neighboring sections. Use 2×4 tiles or another repeatable connector band. Lift and replace the module to confirm that the connection is secure but serviceable.
  9. Apply surface patterns. Add 1×4 tiles, lane markings, crossing stripes, or color changes only after the geometry is proven.
  10. Populate the street. Add signs, lights, trees, greenery, and barriers where they support the traffic and pedestrian story. Leave access to seams and removable details.

Combine ready-made road plates with custom building fronts

You do not have to choose one system for the entire city. Place Road Plates 60304 in the main carriageway, then build a custom eight-stud frontage in front of each modular building. Use 2×4 tiles as the repeatable interface and adjust the curb height with plates and slopes. This hybrid approach preserves the quick connected road surface while allowing every building entrance to meet the sidewalk correctly.

At a corner, let the road plates establish the broad turn and use custom tiles to continue the curb around the building. At a crossing, replace a curb segment with a lower tiled strip or a sloped approach. In a display with different neighborhoods, retain the same connection edge while changing the surface palette inside each module.

Source parts without getting trapped by old numbers

LEGO’s parts help article says, “Every LEGO piece has a unique number.” The number printed in building instructions or an official parts list is a useful starting point, but LEGO also notes that numbers can change. Search Pick a Brick by both the English element name and the number, then verify the current element, color, dimensions, and availability. If a number appears obsolete, LEGO recommends checking BrickLink for an updated number.

Surface patterns that add detail without clutter

Road markings

Use a center line, edge line, or crossing only where the road geometry supports it. Align markings across module seams, and leave enough unmarked surface for a vehicle to read clearly. If you use the Road Plates set, its documented lane markings, speed bumps, and crosswalk can establish the main pattern; custom sections should continue or intentionally interrupt that pattern.

Sidewalk paving

Alternate tile lengths or two close colors to suggest paving slabs. Keep the pattern parallel to the curb on a straight block and rotate it around corners. A narrow border beside the building can hide small alignment differences between modules.

Street furniture and greenery

Road Plates 60304 includes streetlights, traffic lights, road signs, trees, and greenery. In a custom build, place equivalent details where they explain movement: a sign before a crossing, a light near an entrance, or a tree in a planted strip. Leave a removable attachment point so furniture can be relocated when the layout changes.

Troubleshoot common realism and construction problems

The curb does not meet the building

Measure the building-side elevation in plates, not by eye. Remove or add plates until the platform aligns with the base, then use a slope only at the street transition. If the building has stairs, reserve a deliberate lower segment rather than forcing the entire curb to one level.

Modules drift apart

Check that the structural sections are joined with aligned Technic pegs and that the connector tiles land on the same grid. Add support plates below a long edge, but keep at least one planned seam so the module remains removable.

The road looks too narrow

Place the widest vehicle and rotate it through the tightest corner. If wheels overlap the curb or street furniture, widen the road or move the furniture before adding markings. A wider road is not automatically more realistic; it must fit the surrounding frontage and vehicle scale.

The sidewalk reads as another road

Change at least one visual property: raise it with plates, replace studs with tiles, add a curb cap, or use a contrasting color. A thin continuous edge often does more than a large decorative pattern.

Surface details make repairs difficult

Keep lane markings and paving patterns on removable tile sections. Do not permanently cover every connection point. A street that can be lifted in sections is easier to improve than one that has to be dismantled from the buildings outward.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose Road Plates 60304 when you want five connected plates, documented markings, and street accessories quickly.
  • Choose custom modules when the road must match a specific width, curb height, color palette, corner, or building entrance.
  • Use the hybrid method when you want a ready-made carriageway but need custom sidewalks and curbs.
  • Start with the 32×32 modular frontage example if you are building one standard modular block.
  • Use an eight-stud frontage and a six-stud bike lane only as the dimensions of LEGO’s example, then adjust for your own vehicles and buildings.
  • Use three-plate stacks for one-brick height changes, and slopes where a level change should look gradual.
  • Verify current part numbers, colors, dimensions, and availability before ordering.
  • Judge realism by proportion, continuity, transitions, and believable street use—not by a single piece or an untested claim of superiority.
