There is no Nintendo-authorized PC version of Super Mario Galaxy. The best legal alternative is Nintendo’s current Switch release, which supports Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 and is sold as Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, or a combined purchase. If you already own Super Mario 3D All-Stars, that collection remains a legitimate way to play Galaxy on Nintendo hardware.
Downloading ROMs, copied game files, or circumvention products is not a legal substitute. Your practical choice is therefore between buying the current Switch release, using an existing 3D All-Stars license, or finding an authentic used physical copy of that limited-time collection.

What “playing Galaxy on PC legally” actually means
Nintendo Support states that Nintendo does not currently offer or authorize for sale any product that allows people to play or download Nintendo video-game files on personal computers. In other words, there is no official Windows, macOS, or Linux edition of Super Mario Galaxy, no Nintendo PC launcher, and no Nintendo-authorized download that turns a computer into a Galaxy player.
Nintendo identifies authentic game downloads as coming through Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s own website. ROM-download sites, unauthorized copies, and products designed to bypass Nintendo’s protections fall outside that route and are characterized by Nintendo as piracy. A website offering a free Galaxy ROM is therefore not a legal alternative, even if the game is no longer sold for the original Wii.

A third-party emulator can be a separate legal question depending on the software, jurisdiction, and how it is used. That distinction does not create an authorized PC release, and it does not make downloading someone else’s Galaxy files lawful. This guide focuses on products Nintendo actually sells or has authorized.
Option 1: The current Nintendo Switch release
For most people, the cleanest legal answer is Nintendo’s current Switch release. Nintendo’s official product page lists three purchase choices: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2. The page identifies support for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
| Feature | What Nintendo lists |
|---|---|
| Release date | October 2, 2025 |
| Systems | Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 |
| Play modes | TV, tabletop, and handheld |
| Players | One to two players on one system |
| Resolution | Up to 1080p on Switch; up to 4K on Switch 2 where supported |
| Purchase choices | Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, or the combined purchase |
The store listing does not establish one universal price for every country or retailer. Check the live Nintendo eShop page for your region before buying; physical-retailer prices, taxes, currency, and promotions can differ.

This release gives you a current, officially supported product rather than a discontinued Wii setup or an unverified download. You can play on a television, in tabletop mode, or as a handheld game. If you want both Galaxy games, the combined purchase is the straightforward way to obtain the pair; if you only want the first game, Nintendo lists it separately.
Switch 2 owners get the platform’s higher-resolution presentation where the display and connection support it. Nintendo lists enhanced resolution up to 4K on Switch 2 where supported, while the Switch version is listed at up to 1080p. “Up to” matters: the result depends on the console, display, mode, and the conditions Nintendo specifies for that release.

Switch 2 update and second-player controls
Nintendo says the Switch 2 update adds enhanced visuals and allows a second player to use mouse controls for collecting Star Bits and attacking enemies. That feature is an optional way for the assisting player to participate; it does not turn the game into a native PC product. If you are buying specifically for two-player assistance, confirm that your console, controllers, and the installed software are updated as required by Nintendo’s current instructions.
How to start playing
- Choose the release. Decide whether you want Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, or the combined purchase shown on Nintendo’s current store page.
- Choose your hardware. Use a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. The official listing does not authorize installation on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer.
- Check the regional store listing. Confirm the edition, seller, language information, price, and any platform-specific notes before completing the purchase.
- Install or insert the game. Follow Nintendo’s normal eShop or physical-game process for your edition. Keep the console connected to the account or cartridge that owns the license.
- Select a play mode. Use TV, tabletop, or handheld mode. The product listing rates the game for one to two players on one system.
- For Switch 2, install the current update. The update is the one Nintendo associates with enhanced visuals and the second-player mouse-control feature. Use Nintendo’s update instructions if the console does not offer it automatically.
Option 2: Super Mario 3D All-Stars
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is the best legal route for people who already own it. Nintendo Support says the collection was offered for a limited time and that customers who purchased the digital edition can still play it and redownload it. An existing digital license is therefore the simplest way to continue playing without buying another copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you bought the digital edition
Use the Nintendo account that purchased the collection and open the account’s redownload or re-download area. The exact menu wording can change with console software, so follow Nintendo’s current account instructions. Do not purchase a second code from an unknown seller merely because the original game no longer appears as a new product in the store; first check the account that made the original purchase.
If you need a physical copy
Authentic cartridges may appear through secondary-market sellers, but Nintendo’s limited-time release status means availability and price are not fixed. Before paying, check:
- Whether the listing is for the genuine Nintendo cartridge and box, not a reproduction or download code of uncertain origin.
- The cartridge’s region and whether it matches your console and intended language or account setup.
- The seller’s feedback, return policy, and photos of the actual item.
- Whether the seller clearly distinguishes a complete copy from a cartridge-only listing.
- Whether the marketplace provides buyer protection if the cartridge fails to read or is not authentic.
Do not assume that every listing described as “All-Stars” is the Nintendo collection. Verify the title, publisher, cartridge photographs, and platform before ordering.

Who should choose All-Stars?
Choose this route when you already own the digital license, already have a genuine cartridge, or specifically want the collection’s other included games as well. It is less predictable for a new buyer because Nintendo no longer treats it as a normal, continuously available digital purchase. A used copy can be lawful, but the seller and cartridge require more scrutiny than a current first-party store listing.

The two legal routes serve different situations. The current Switch release is easier to obtain new and is the only option in this comparison with Nintendo’s listed Switch 2 presentation and update. 3D All-Stars is attractive mainly when you already paid for it or find a demonstrably authentic physical copy.

| Legal authorization | Current Nintendo product listing for Switch and Switch 2 | Lawful for existing digital purchasers and owners of authentic physical copies |

| Display quality | Nintendo lists up to 1080p on Switch and up to 4K on Switch 2 where supported | The cited support information does not establish a comparable current resolution figure |

| Best fit | Someone buying Galaxy now, wanting both games, or using Switch 2 | Someone who already owns the digital collection or finds a verified physical copy |
Which option should you choose?
You do not own a Nintendo console
Buy the current Switch release together with compatible Nintendo hardware. The Galaxy product itself is not a PC license, so purchasing the game without a Switch or Switch 2 does not solve the platform problem. Decide whether the standard Switch experience meets your display needs or whether Switch 2’s listed resolution and visual update justify the additional hardware cost in your region.
You own a Nintendo Switch
The current Switch release is the least complicated choice. It is actively listed, works in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, and lets you select one game or the combined purchase. Check the regional store page for the current price and edition before checkout.
You own a Nintendo Switch 2
Use the current release and install the available Switch 2 update. Nintendo lists enhanced visuals and up to 4K output where supported, plus the second-player mouse-control feature. Confirm that your television or monitor and connection support the resolution you expect; the listing’s “where supported” qualification means 4K is not guaranteed on every setup.

Redownload it through the purchasing Nintendo account. There is no reason to buy a replacement copy simply because the collection is no longer offered as a normal limited-time sale.
You found a used 3D All-Stars cartridge
Proceed only after checking authenticity, region, seller reputation, photos, and return rights. A suspiciously cheap listing, a seller who will not show the cartridge, or a product described only as a “ROM” is a reason to walk away.
You want to avoid buying a console
There is no Nintendo-authorized product that replaces the console with a PC. Avoid sites promising “Galaxy for Windows,” preconfigured ROM bundles, or devices advertised as bypassing Nintendo protections. They do not provide the authorized route described by Nintendo.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an emulator does not change the recommendation
People often use “legal alternative” to mean “an emulator with a game dump.” That phrase combines two separate issues. Emulator software may be treated differently from copied game files under the laws of different countries, but Nintendo does not authorize a PC product for playing or downloading its game files. Obtaining a Galaxy ROM from an unauthorized source remains outside Nintendo’s stated distribution channel.

Making or using a personal backup can also involve jurisdiction-specific rules and hardware terms that this guide cannot generalize. The safe, product-level answer is unchanged: Nintendo sells the current Galaxy release for Switch and Switch 2, not for personal computers. If a PC setup requires an unauthorized ROM, copied download, or circumvention device, it is not the legal alternative this article recommends.
What the official porting work tells us
In September 2020, Nintendo European Research & Development described supporting the Super Mario Galaxy port for Super Mario 3D All-Stars with graphics and audio emulation technologies. That technical background helps explain how Nintendo brought the game to its own hardware. It does not announce or imply a Nintendo-authorized Windows, macOS, or Linux edition.
Buying and setup checklist
- Identify the platform first. The authorized products in this guide run on Nintendo hardware, not a general-purpose PC.
- Use Nintendo’s current listing. Verify whether you want the first game, the second game, or the combined purchase.
- Check your region. Prices, taxes, currencies, seller availability, and product details can differ by country.
- Match the display claim to your hardware. Nintendo lists 1080p on Switch and 4K on Switch 2 where supported; neither figure should be treated as a guarantee for every television or monitor.
- Plan for two players. The current listing rates the release for one to two players on one system. On Switch 2, the update adds mouse controls for the assisting player’s Star-Bit collection and enemy attacks.
- For 3D All-Stars, verify ownership. Digital owners should use the purchasing Nintendo account. Used buyers should verify cartridge authenticity, region, seller reputation, and return protection.
- Reject ROM and circumvention offers. Nintendo characterizes unauthorized copies, ROM downloads, and unlawful circumvention products as piracy.
Bottom line
For a new purchase, choose Nintendo’s current Super Mario Galaxy release for Switch or Switch 2, with the combined Galaxy package if you want both games. For existing owners, redownload Super Mario 3D All-Stars or buy only an authentic used copy. There is no Nintendo-authorized way to install or download Galaxy for a personal computer, so a PC offer that depends on ROMs or copied files is not a legal alternative.
