For fast healing practice in a Left 4 Dead PC demo, keep movement on WASD, leave the documented item slots available (4 for a medkit and 5 for pain pills), and move the healing actions to reachable keys you can press without releasing movement. Record each attempt with record <name>, stop with stop, and bind a separate reset action such as restartgame or changelevel so every trial starts from the same state. Pills activate immediately and are safer for a quick transition; medkits require an application animation that leaves you exposed.

What to bind for fast healing

The best layout is the one that lets you keep steering while selecting the item, avoids accidental presses, and remains identical on every recorded attempt. There is no universally fastest key: hand size, keyboard shape, movement technique and whether you use a mouse side button all change the result. Treat the following as a repeatable practice layout rather than a competitive standard.

Action Documented PC default Fast-practice guidance
Medkit 4 Keep it on 4 if your left hand can reach it while holding movement; otherwise assign a nearby, dedicated key.
Pain pills 5 Keep it on 5 or move it to a reachable key that does not conflict with movement or voice controls.
Interact E Retain a distinct interact key so doors, pickups and item use are not confused during a run.
Weapon switch Q Keep it separate from healing; a mistaken switch can make the demo appear to have a missed item input.
Flashlight F Do not place a healing action on the same key or in a position where a dark-room correction can trigger it.

These defaults are the useful baseline for PC practice. If you change them, write the new layout at the top of your practice notes and use it for every attempt in a comparison set.

Why pills are usually the fast consumable

Pain pills

Pain pills take effect immediately and provide temporary health. That makes them the practical choice when the objective is to cross a dangerous stretch, reach a saferoom transition or survive long enough to complete the next movement sequence. The input can be tested as a short, repeatable action: select the pills, activate them, and continue moving. The temporary nature of the health still matters; pills are a bridge, not a permanent recovery plan.

First-aid kits

A medkit takes time to apply. During its use animation you are vulnerable, so using it in the middle of a movement line can cost more time or safety than the health it restores. Reserve medkits for a controlled pause, a protected corner, or a point where the route already requires waiting. If your drill is specifically measuring a fast heal, record the medkit sequence separately from the pill sequence instead of treating them as interchangeable actions.

Adrenaline and other consumables

Speedrun guidance treats pills and adrenaline as faster to use than first-aid kits. The exact benefit of an adrenaline use depends on the route and the objective you are practicing, so label the item in your notes and do not combine different consumables in one timing set. A comparison is meaningful only when the starting health, location, movement path and destination are held constant.

A keybinding layout that preserves movement

Keep the movement hand occupied

Begin with WASD and identify which fingers remain available while you hold the direction needed for the drill. A key is suitable when you can press it without lifting the finger that controls the route or shifting your hand far enough to cause a steering error. The familiar 4 and 5 slots are viable for many players, but they are not automatically optimal; test them while strafing, backing up and turning, not only while standing still.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use dedicated, non-overlapping healing keys

Give pills and medkits separate keys. A single “heal” habit is hard to diagnose in a demo because selecting the wrong item can look like a delayed activation. Keep interact, weapon switching and flashlight controls distinct as well. The goal is an unambiguous input log: one key selects the intended item, one activation consumes it, and no nearby key performs an unrelated action.

Example layouts

The examples below are starting points, not claims of a universal fastest configuration. Keep your own layout if it produces fewer misses.

Style Movement Pills Medkit Reset/record When it suits
Default-first WASD 5 4 Separate console or menu action Players who already reach the number row reliably.
Reachable-row WASD A nearby unused letter Another nearby unused letter Separate key or console Players who lose steering when reaching the number row.
Mouse-assisted WASD Unused mouse side button Another dedicated mouse side button or keyboard key Console or menu action Players who can press a side button without changing aim.

Do not put reset and record on a key you might press during the route. A reset that fires accidentally invalidates the attempt; a record command pressed at the wrong time makes the demo start too early or too late.

Set up the practice environment

  1. Choose one map, spawn position and route segment. Use the same segment until the input sequence is stable.
  2. Open the game’s keyboard and mouse controls and confirm the current assignments for medkit, pills, interact, weapon switching and flashlight. Menu wording can differ by game version, so verify the displayed labels rather than relying on memory.
  3. Apply your chosen changes and perform a dry run without recording. Check that movement remains continuous while each item is selected and consumed.
  4. Decide where the attempt begins and ends. For example, the start may be the first movement input and the end may be a saferoom transition; write the boundary down.
  5. Prepare a reset action that returns the map to the same state. Speedrun documentation uses commands such as restartgame or changelevel for repeatable resets.

Do not compare attempts made with different map states, item locations or health values. A clean control test isolates the key sequence; a route test measures the complete movement-and-heal decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record a demo correctly

Start recording before the attempt

  1. Enable the developer console in the game’s settings if it is not already available.
  2. Open the console before the movement sequence begins.
  3. Enter record <name>, replacing <name> with a unique filename for the attempt.
  4. Close the console and perform the exact movement and item sequence you planned.
  5. When the attempt reaches its defined endpoint, open the console and enter stop.

Use a naming scheme that records the meaningful variables without becoming ambiguous, such as a map or segment label, item type and attempt number. The filename is for your own organization; it does not change the control behavior.

Keep recording overhead out of the measured sequence

The console commands belong outside the movement line you are evaluating. If the practice starts with the console open, that is a different drill from one that starts with the player already moving. Pick one convention and keep it fixed. Record the same pre-start state for every attempt in a comparison set.

Use separate demos for different questions

  • Input test: Does the intended key select and consume the intended item while movement continues?
  • Route test: Does the selected item let you complete the segment safely?
  • Recovery test: Does a medkit used at a planned safe pause avoid unnecessary exposure?

Mixing these questions makes a failure difficult to diagnose. A route can fail because of a bad key, a poor healing location or an unrelated movement error.

Build a repeatable reset-and-record loop

A reset bind is valuable because it removes the delay and inconsistency of manually rebuilding the setup. The documented options include restarting the game or changing the level. Keep the reset action separate from the healing actions and verify it in an unrecorded dry run first.

  1. Finish and stop the current demo.
  2. Trigger the chosen reset command, such as restartgame or changelevel.
  3. Wait for the same spawn and map state used in the previous attempt.
  4. Confirm the item and health state before recording. If it differs, discard the trial rather than silently changing the comparison.
  5. Start a new demo with a new filename using record <name>.

If a reset command does not return the exact state you need, use the documented level-loading approach and define a new baseline. The important property is not the particular command; it is that every recorded attempt begins from an identical, observable state.

Replay and verify the demo

Open the recorded file

Use playdemo or the game’s demo interface to load the file. Keep the playback method consistent when comparing attempts. The objective is verification, not a claimed frame-time benchmark: the cited guidance provides recording and playback procedures but no controlled measurement of seconds or frames saved by a particular key.

Check the input sequence

  • Was the player still moving in the intended direction when the healing key was pressed?
  • Did the selected item match the plan, or did a neighboring key select a weapon or another slot?
  • Did the item activate at the intended location, rather than after the player had already passed the safe point?
  • For a medkit, did the application animation begin while the player was exposed?
  • For pills, did the immediate activation support the planned crossing or transition?

Classify failures instead of guessing

Mark each failed attempt as an input miss, route miss, reset-state mismatch or timing-choice error. An input miss points to reachability or accidental presses. A route miss may mean the healing point was unsafe. A reset mismatch invalidates the comparison. A timing-choice error means the key worked but the selected item did not fit the situation. This classification tells you what to change on the next attempt.

Practice drills for fast pills and medkits

Stationary selection drill

Stand in a safe location and alternate between the pills and medkit controls without consuming the wrong item. This checks that the bindings are distinct and that your hand returns to movement afterward. It is a control check, not a speed claim.

Strafing pill drill

Hold a direction, select the pills, activate them and continue along the same line. Replay the demo to confirm that movement did not stop and that the pills activated before the danger point you defined. Repeat from the opposite strafe direction; a key that feels reachable in one direction may cause a steering error in the other.

Protected medkit drill

Choose a location where you can deliberately pause. Start the medkit animation there, observe the exposure during use, and resume movement only after the application is complete. The purpose is to learn where the longer action belongs, not to force a medkit into a pill-style transition.

Transition drill

Practice the last movement segment before a saferoom or other defined endpoint. Compare a pill sequence with a medkit sequence under the same starting conditions, but keep the recordings separate. Note whether the temporary health from pills is sufficient for the crossing and whether the medkit’s application time creates an avoidable interruption.

Choosing between bindings and items

Decision factor Pills Medkit What to record
Activation behavior Immediate use Application animation Whether the action completed at the planned point.
Exposure while using Shorter practical use window Player remains vulnerable during application Enemy pressure and whether movement had to stop.
Health result Temporary health First-aid recovery intended for a more permanent heal Starting health and the reason for selecting the item.
Best route context Fast crossings and immediate danger Protected pauses or deliberate recovery points Location, destination and route boundary.
Key priority Most reachable dedicated key Separate key that cannot be confused with pills Any accidental selection or delayed activation.

The table is a decision aid, not a promise that one item always wins. A temporary-health item can be the wrong choice if the route requires sustained recovery, while a medkit can be correct when the route provides protection.

Troubleshoot common control problems

The wrong item activates

Return to the documented defaults and test 4 for the medkit and 5 for pills. If the defaults work but your custom layout does not, move the two actions farther apart and remove any overlapping assignment. Verify the result in a short demo before attempting a full route.

Movement stops when healing

The key is too far from the movement hand, or your technique requires a finger that is holding a direction. Try a nearer unused key or a dedicated mouse side button, then test forward, backward and lateral movement separately. Keep the layout that produces the fewest steering errors, not the one that looks fastest on paper.

The demo starts too late

Enter record <name> before the defined start boundary. If the console-opening step is part of the drill, include it consistently; otherwise perform it before the measured sequence. Stop with stop only after the endpoint so the replay contains the complete action.

The reset produces a different state

Check the spawn, health, item possession and map position before recording. If any differs, do not compare that demo with the previous set. Re-establish the baseline with the chosen restart or level-change procedure and document the state you are accepting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replay is hard to interpret

Shorten the segment, use unique filenames and change one variable at a time. A demo that includes several item swaps, a route change and a new reset method cannot show which change caused the result.

What the evidence can and cannot prove

The documented workflow establishes how to enable the developer console, record with record <name>, stop with stop, reset with commands such as restartgame or changelevel, and replay with playdemo or the demo interface. The default PC mappings establish 4 for medkits, 5 for pain pills, E for interact, Q for weapon switching and F for the flashlight. Qualitative speedrun guidance establishes that pills and adrenaline are used faster than first-aid kits.

It does not establish a universal fastest key, a fixed number of seconds saved, or a frame-perfect advantage for any particular keyboard, mouse or controller. Exact timings can vary with game version, configuration and practice environment. Use demos to verify your own consistency and route decisions rather than presenting an unmeasured key choice as a benchmark.

A compact checklist for every session

  • Movement remains on WASD unless you have a documented reason to change it.
  • Medkit and pill actions are separate and identifiable.
  • Interact, weapon switch and flashlight do not overlap either healing action.
  • Reset and record controls cannot be pressed accidentally during movement.
  • The map, spawn, health, inventory and route boundary are written down.
  • Recording begins before the measured sequence with record <name>.
  • Recording ends after the endpoint with stop.
  • Each comparison uses the same reset procedure.
  • Replay is loaded with playdemo or the demo interface.
  • Failures are classified as input, route, state or item-choice errors.

Recommended baseline

Start with the documented defaults: 4 for medkit, 5 for pills, E for interact, Q for weapon switching and F for flashlight. If reaching 4 or 5 interrupts movement, move the healing actions to two dedicated nearby keys or mouse buttons while leaving reset and recording separate. Use pills for immediate, temporary recovery during a dangerous crossing; use medkits at protected pauses where their longer application will not expose you. Record each attempt from the same state, replay it, and judge the layout by missed inputs and repeatability rather than by an unsupported claim of saved frames.
