Start with Bookerly or Amazon Ember, increase the font size until you can read without squinting, and add only enough boldness to make the letterforms distinct. Then tune spacing, margins, alignment, brightness, and (when supported) Dark Mode for the room you are in. Leave Page Refresh off unless ghosting or residual text bothers you; turn it on when cleaner redraws are worth the more noticeable flash.
A comfortable starting profile
There is no single setting that suits every reader, room, or Kindle generation. The most reliable approach is to establish a readable baseline and change one control at a time. The table below gives a practical first pass rather than a universal prescription.
| Control | Starting choice | What to adjust next |
|---|---|---|
| Font family | Bookerly or Amazon Ember | Try the other family if the shapes feel too narrow, wide, heavy, or light. |
| Font size | Increase until you can read without squinting | Reduce only if frequent page turns or very short lines become distracting. |
| Boldness | Use the lowest level that makes strokes clear | Add boldness when thin strokes fade; reduce it when letters merge. |
| Line spacing | Slightly wider than the default if text feels crowded | Increase further for dense pages, or return toward default if the page feels fragmented. |
| Margins | Slightly wider when lines feel visually cramped | Balance calmer edges against the number of words that fit on each line. |
| Alignment | Left aligned when justified text creates uneven gaps | Use the alternative only if its line endings look more comfortable to you. |
| Brightness | The lowest level that keeps text clear in the current room | Raise it in bright surroundings and lower it in a dark room. |
| Page Refresh | Off for fewer full-page flashes | Turn it on if you notice residual text or ghosting. |
Save a combination that works as a Theme when your model offers Themes. A daytime Theme and a nighttime Theme prevent you from rebuilding the layout every time the ambient light changes.

Bookerly and Amazon Ember
Bookerly and Amazon Ember are sensible first choices because they are documented Kindle options designed for reading. Compare them at the same size and boldness instead of changing several variables at once. One may give you more distinct letter shapes, while the other may feel more open or compact; the better choice is the one you can read continuously without squinting or consciously decoding characters.

OpenDyslexic for readers who prefer it
OpenDyslexic is another documented option. It is not automatically easier for every reader, but some people prefer its letterforms. Try a representative page of your current book, including punctuation and italics, before deciding. If it improves recognition, keep it; if it makes words look less familiar or uneven, return to Bookerly or Amazon Ember.
How to set the font while reading
- Open a book and tap near the top of the page to reveal the reading toolbar.
- Tap the Aa or text-display control. The exact icon and wording can differ by Kindle generation, firmware, app, and geography.
- Open the font section and select Bookerly, Amazon Ember, OpenDyslexic, or another font shown on your device.
- Read several paragraphs, including a page with dialogue and punctuation, before judging the change.
The same display panel is where Kindle groups font size and boldness. Amazon also documents changing font size with a pinching motion while reading, which is useful for a quick temporary adjustment.
Set font size and boldness for effortless recognition
Font size comes before fine tuning
Font size has the largest effect on whether you strain. Increase it until normal reading distance feels relaxed and you are not narrowing your eyes to resolve small characters. Do not copy a numeric size from another reader: screen size, eyesight, viewing distance, and the chosen font all change how that number appears. A larger size can mean more page turns, but avoiding squinting is the more important comfort test.
Use boldness to clarify, not to darken everything
Kindle provides five boldness levels. Start at the lowest level that makes thin strokes and punctuation easy to distinguish. If letters look faint, move up one level and reassess a full page. If counters inside letters close up, punctuation becomes blocky, or words visually run together, step back down. Boldness should solve weak strokes; it should not compensate for a font size that is too small.

A repeatable adjustment sequence
- Hold the device at your usual reading distance and set a comfortable room light.
- Choose the font family first.
- Increase font size until squinting stops.
- Adjust boldness one level at a time until strokes are distinct without filled-in counters.
- Read for a few minutes before making another change; immediate impressions can be misleading when several controls move together.
Reduce visual crowding with spacing, margins, and alignment
Line spacing
Slightly wider line spacing separates adjacent lines and can make it easier to keep your place. It is especially useful when a larger font creates a dense block of text. Excessive spacing can make the page feel disjointed and force more eye travel, so increase it only until lines stop competing with one another.
Margins
Wider margins create more white space at the edges and can make long lines feel less imposing. They also reduce the number of words per line, which may increase page turns. Choose the narrowest margin that prevents the text from feeling pressed against the bezel, or widen it when the default column looks crowded.
Alignment
Fully justified text can create conspicuous gaps when a line contains few words or the device has to stretch spacing. Amazon notes that left-aligned text, together with wider spacing and margins, can reduce eye strain and improve focus for some readers. Select left alignment when those irregular gaps interrupt your reading rhythm. If they do not bother you, compare both modes on a page with short lines before deciding.

The Aa and Page Display area can also expose orientation and page color, in addition to font, size, boldness, spacing, margins, alignment, and Themes. Orientation is useful when you have a specific viewing position, while page color can change the overall contrast. Make one change, read a page, and keep the option only if it improves sustained reading rather than merely looking different in the first few seconds.

Adjust brightness to the room, not to a fixed number
Brightness is an ambient-light control, not a setting with one correct value. Use the lowest level that keeps the text and page surface clear in the room where you are reading. Raise it when surrounding light washes out the display; lower it in a dark room so the screen does not feel unnecessarily intense. Kindle models expose brightness through a scale or plus and minus buttons, but Amazon does not publish a universally correct numeric level.
Daytime setup
- Stand or sit where you normally read and let your eyes adapt to the room.
- Open the quick settings shade or the device’s brightness control.
- Lower brightness until the page begins to lose clarity, then raise it slightly.
- Check a page with small punctuation and a page with large headings; both should remain legible.
In a bright room, a very low setting may make the page appear dull even though it is comfortable in a dim room. Recheck after moving near a window or outdoors rather than preserving the old level.
Nighttime setup
Lower the brightness before reading in a dark room. If the display still feels too prominent, try Dark Mode on a compatible black-and-white Kindle. Dark Mode inverts text and page colors; it is supported on Kindle Paperwhite and other supported models. Some readers find the inverted contrast comfortable at night, while others find white text on black less sharp. Keep the mode that lets you recognize words without halos or extra effort, and return to light mode if inversion reduces clarity.
Decide whether Dark Mode helps you
Dark Mode changes the polarity of the page rather than merely dimming it. To evaluate it fairly, keep font, size, boldness, spacing, and brightness constant while switching modes. Read a normal paragraph, a page with italics, and a page with punctuation. Look for the amount of effort required to track lines, not just whether the black background initially appears soothing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Keep Dark Mode: inverted colors remain sharp, comfortable, and easy to track in your usual low-light setting.
- Use light mode: white-on-black text looks fuzzy, halos appear around letters, or your eyes work harder to maintain focus.
- Check compatibility: Dark Mode availability depends on the Kindle model and software, so the option may not appear on every device or in every app.
Choose Page Refresh based on ghosting versus flashing
Page Refresh controls how often Kindle performs a full display redraw. A full redraw can remove residual text, commonly called ghosting, but it is more noticeable than a normal page transition. The comfortable choice depends on which effect distracts you more.
Where to find the control
- From the Home screen, open Settings or All Settings.
- Open Reading Options.
- Find Page Refresh and switch it on or off.
- Return to the book and turn several pages, including pages with images or large type, before judging the result.
Menu wording and location vary by generation, firmware, Kindle app, and geography. If you do not see the option in Reading Options, consult the help information for that exact device rather than assuming it has been removed or renamed.
Leave it off when flashes are the problem
With Page Refresh off, page turns are generally less visually disruptive because the full-page flash occurs less often. Choose this setting when you do not see distracting remnants and the flash itself breaks concentration, especially during fast page turning.

Turn it on when remnants interrupt reading
Enable Page Refresh when faint characters from the previous page remain visible, images look dirty, or the accumulated artifacts make it harder to follow text. The trade-off is a more obvious redraw. There is no official universal recommendation; compare both modes under the lighting and font settings you actually use.

Build separate daytime and nighttime Themes
Themes store a successful group of reading-display choices on models that support them. Use them to preserve typography and layout while changing light-related controls.
Daytime Theme
- Use the font family and size that remain clear in bright surroundings.
- Set brightness high enough to overcome the room’s light, but not higher than clarity requires.
- Choose light mode unless Dark Mode is demonstrably sharper for you.
- Keep your preferred spacing, margins, and alignment unchanged while you test brightness.
Nighttime Theme
- Keep the same readable font size unless your viewing distance changes.
- Lower brightness for the darker room.
- Test Dark Mode and retain it only if letter edges stay sharp.
- Use the Page Refresh choice that minimizes your particular distraction.
Saving these as separate Themes avoids repeatedly editing every field. Theme availability and the exact save controls vary across Kindle generations, so use the Theme option shown in your Aa or Page Display panel.
Fix common comfort problems systematically
“The text is too small, even at normal brightness.”
- Increase font size before raising brightness.
- Set boldness only high enough to clarify strokes.
- Try wider line spacing if adjacent lines compete for attention.
- Move to a font whose letterforms you recognize more quickly.
Brightness cannot compensate for characters that are physically too small; increasing it may only make the page more glaring.
Recommended Free Tools
“The page looks crowded.”
- Increase line spacing slightly.
- Widen margins one step if the text column feels pressed to the edges.
- Switch to left alignment if justification creates large internal gaps.
- Recheck font size after layout changes, because wider margins and spacing alter how much text fits on each page.
“Letters look faint or uneven.”
- Raise boldness one level.
- Compare Bookerly and Amazon Ember at the same size.
- Raise brightness only enough to restore contrast in the current room.
- If the problem appears only after page turns, test Page Refresh for ghosting.
“The screen flashes too often.”
- Open Settings or All Settings, then Reading Options.
- Turn Page Refresh off.
- Read several pages and check whether residual text is acceptable.
- If ghosting is more distracting than flashing, turn the setting back on.
“Dark Mode feels worse than a normal page.”
Return to light mode and keep the lower brightness that remains clear. Inverted colors are a preference and a compatibility-dependent feature, not a requirement for nighttime reading.
Use this decision framework for different reading situations
| Situation | Typography and layout | Lighting and redraw | Reason to change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long session in a normally lit room | Readable size, modest boldness, slightly wider spacing if lines crowd | Lowest clear brightness; Page Refresh off unless ghosting appears | Prioritizes sustained focus and fewer interruptions. |
| Bright room or near a window | Keep the size that prevents squinting; widen margins only if the column feels cramped | Raise brightness until text remains clear | Ambient light can reduce apparent contrast. |
| Dark bedroom | Keep size and boldness stable; avoid shrinking text to reduce the lit area | Lower brightness; test Dark Mode; choose Page Refresh by comfort | Reduces an overly intense display without sacrificing legibility. |
| Visible residual text | Do not change typography first | Enable Page Refresh and compare several turns | Addresses redraw artifacts directly. |
| Distracting full-page flashes | Leave typography unchanged while testing | Disable Page Refresh, then check for acceptable ghosting | Separates redraw discomfort from font or brightness issues. |
| Difficulty tracking lines | Try left alignment, wider spacing, and wider margins | Keep brightness at the room-appropriate level | Reduces visual crowding and irregular justification gaps. |
Model, firmware, and app differences to expect
Kindle display controls are not identical across generations. The available fonts, Dark Mode, warm-light features, Themes, Page Refresh wording, and exact menu paths can differ by device, firmware, Kindle app, and geography. A setting described in a guide for one model may be absent or placed elsewhere on another.
When a control is missing, first install any offered device update and reopen the current Settings, Aa, or Page Display panels. If the option still does not appear, treat that as a model or software limitation rather than forcing an equivalent value from another Kindle. This is particularly important for Page Refresh, Dark Mode, warm light, and Themes.
A five-minute setup checklist
- Open a book you know well and reveal the Aa or Page Display menu.
- Select Bookerly or Amazon Ember; test OpenDyslexic if you prefer its shapes.
- Increase font size until you can read without squinting.
- Set one of the five boldness levels so strokes are clear but counters remain open.
- Adjust line spacing and margins slightly wider if the page feels crowded.
- Choose left alignment when justified spacing creates distracting gaps.
- Set brightness to the lowest level that keeps text clear in the present room.
- In low light, compare Dark Mode with light mode at the same typography settings.
- Open Settings or All Settings, choose Reading Options, and test Page Refresh against your tolerance for ghosting and flashing.
- Save the result as a Theme when your model supports Themes, then create a separate nighttime version if your room lighting changes substantially.
Revisit only the control connected to a new problem. If you move from daylight to a dark room, change brightness first; if text remnants appear, test Page Refresh; if words are hard to recognize, revisit size, font, and boldness. This keeps a comfortable setup stable instead of turning every adjustment into a full reset.
