For a dedicated e-reader, Kobo is the clearest Kindle alternative for borrowing public-library eBooks—provided your country, library, exact model, and the title all support Kobo’s built-in OverDrive feature. PocketBook is another option with direct Libby access on qualifying firmware. If compatibility is uncertain, the Libby app on a phone or tablet is the simpler fallback.
Which e-reader is best for borrowing library books?
For readers who want to borrow and read library eBooks on a dedicated e-reader, start with a supported Kobo. Kobo’s built-in OverDrive feature lets borrowers browse, borrow, place holds, and sync eligible library eBooks on listed models. The supported-model list includes Kobo Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra Colour, Elipsa 2E, Sage, and several older devices. Confirm the exact model is supported before buying; the feature is not available on every Kobo.
Kobo is not a universal pass to every Libby title. Your library must participate, your location must be supported, and a particular loan must be compatible with Kobo. Kobo says some library titles are not available from Kobo, while Libby warns that some borrowed eBooks will not sync to Kobo.
Check country support carefully
Kobo’s built-in borrowing page lists Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. Its separate country information also includes Malaysia. Because the lists differ, do not rely on a general statement that Kobo works everywhere Libby does. Check the current support information for your country, account region, device, and library.

How Kobo borrowing works—and what it does not support
On a supported Kobo, you need Wi-Fi and a library card. You can search for library books, borrow available titles, place holds, and sync loans to the e-reader. Borrowed books return automatically when the library’s lending period ends. Libraries may own a limited number of digital copies, so popular books can have waitlists; loan periods are set by the library. See Kobo’s borrowing instructions and its Libby overview.
Borrowing in Libby does not guarantee that a book will appear on a Kobo. For a loan to sync, it may need to match a title in Kobo’s catalog, and Libby says not all Libby eBooks are compatible. Kobo e-readers also do not play Libby audiobooks or display Libby magazines. The Libby guide to reading eBooks on Kobo, last updated February 26, 2026, explains these restrictions. Some older Kobo models can instead receive supported library eBooks through an Adobe Digital Editions transfer from a computer.

Other ways to borrow library books on an e-reader
| Option | How borrowing works | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Supported Kobo, such as Clara BW | Borrow and manage eligible library eBooks on the device using built-in OverDrive; eligible loans can also sync after borrowing in Libby. | Country, participating library, exact model, and title compatibility. Kobo e-readers do not support Libby audiobooks or magazines. |
| PocketBook Era Color or another qualifying model | PocketBook x Libby provides direct library discovery and loan management, eBook reading, audiobook listening, and magazine access. | The device must run firmware 6.10 or higher, and the library service and content must be available to you. |
| Kindle | In the United States, eligible Kindle-format books can be borrowed through Libby or a library OverDrive site and sent to Kindle. | This route is for U.S. public libraries and eligible Kindle-format titles; it does not mean every Libby book works on Kindle. |
| Compatible older e-reader | Borrow and download an eBook on a Windows or Mac computer, open it in Adobe Digital Editions, then transfer it to the reader. | Confirm reader compatibility and have access to a computer and the appropriate connection cable. |
| Phone or tablet with Libby | Read or listen within the Libby app, without transferring a loan to a separate e-reader. | Confirm your device and library support the app and the content you want. |
PocketBook: direct Libby access with a firmware requirement
OverDrive says PocketBook x Libby is available on devices running firmware 6.10 or higher, naming the Era Color and Verse Color as examples. Its feature set includes library-card access, browsing, borrowing, holds, downloads, returns, renewals, eBook reading, audiobook listening, and magazine access. Check your exact model’s firmware and library availability; older firmware may offer a built-in browser for OverDrive eBooks instead. See OverDrive’s PocketBook guide, last updated August 13, 2026.
Kindle: a useful option for U.S. public-library loans
Kindle remains an option if your public library is in the United States and the book is available in Kindle format. OverDrive’s Kindle instructions explain how to send eligible loans to a Kindle. OverDrive identifies Kindle library books as U.S.-only in its e-reader guidance, last updated August 18, 2026. Outside that route, a Kindle should not be treated as a general-purpose Libby reader.

Computer transfer: a fallback for compatible readers
If your e-reader supports the relevant library format but lacks direct borrowing, OverDrive documents a transfer workflow using free Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on Windows or Mac. Borrow and download the eBook, open it in ADE, connect the compatible reader, and transfer the title from ADE. This requires more setup than borrowing on the device and depends on reader compatibility. Follow OverDrive’s e-reader setup instructions, last updated August 18, 2026.
Phone or tablet: the practical fallback
When your country, library, or preferred loan format is not supported by an e-reader, using Libby on a supported phone or tablet avoids the device-to-library sync question. It is also the straightforward choice if you want to use Libby audiobooks or magazines with a Kobo, which cannot play or display those formats.

How to choose before you buy
- Check your library first. Confirm it uses Libby or OverDrive and that the books you want are available in the formats you plan to read or listen to.
- Check country and device support. For Kobo, compare your location and exact model with Kobo’s current borrowing support page. For PocketBook, confirm that your model qualifies and runs firmware 6.10 or higher.
- Decide whether you need direct borrowing. Kobo and qualifying PocketBook devices offer on-device library access. ADE transfer requires a compatible reader, a Windows or Mac computer, and more steps.
- Check the content format. Kobo is an eBook-focused route; PocketBook x Libby supports eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines according to OverDrive. Kindle loans are limited to eligible Kindle-format books through U.S. public libraries.
- Choose the fallback that fits your situation. Use Libby on a phone or tablet if e-reader compatibility is uncertain; use ADE if you already own a compatible reader and do not mind computer transfers.
