For live pages that rely on JavaScript or modern CSS, start with Playwright Java or Flying Saucer’s Chrome PDF artifact. The key difference is rendering fidelity: the pure-Java options are not full browsers, while browser-backed rendering is designed to handle browser behavior. Choose based on the page you need to render, the output you need, and what you can deploy.
Which Java option fits your HTML?
| Option | Best starting point | Output and rendering model | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenHTMLtoPDF | Documents generated from templates you control | PDF or images; pure-Java renderer | Does not run JavaScript and does not support many modern browser standards, including flex and grid. |
| Traditional Flying Saucer | Well-formed XHTML and CSS 2.1 in a JVM application | Swing, PDF, and image output; pure-Java renderer | Not a full modern browser. Check the Java requirement for the exact release line. |
| Playwright Java | Modern pages that depend on JavaScript or browser layout | Browser page or element screenshots and PDF generation through Java APIs | Requires browser installation and a compatible runtime and deployment environment. |
| Flying Saucer Chrome PDF artifact | PDFs that need modern HTML5/CSS3 rendering while using the Flying Saucer project | PDF via chrome-headless-shell | This is a distinct browser-backed artifact, not the traditional Flying Saucer renderer. |
| wkhtmltopdf / wkhtmltoimage | Deployments that can operate command-line renderer binaries | PDF and image output via Qt WebKit | Check maintenance and platform support; the project overview consulted is older than the other documentation cited here. |
Output format alone does not make these options interchangeable. If your page uses scripts, flexbox, grid, or other current browser behavior, test a browser-backed option first. If you own the markup and can keep it within a renderer’s supported subset, a JVM renderer may be simpler to integrate.
OpenHTMLtoPDF: best for controlled templates
OpenHTMLtoPDF is a pure-Java renderer based on Flying Saucer and PDFBox. Its README describes support for a reasonable subset of well-formed XML/XHTML and some HTML5, with PDF or image output. The project’s own FAQ cautions: “No, it’s not a web browser.” It does not execute JavaScript and calls out limitations such as flex and grid. See the project README for current dependency, module, and license details; it describes LGPL licensing and accessible PDF and PDF/A workflows.
This makes it a practical candidate when your application owns the templates and can prepare markup for the renderer. Do not assume that an arbitrary live website will look the same as it does in Chrome or Firefox. Prototype the actual templates and styles your product will use.

Flying Saucer: distinguish the traditional renderer from its Chrome artifact
Traditional Flying Saucer
The traditional renderer is a pure-Java option for well-formed XML/XHTML and CSS 2.1. The project documents Swing, PDF, and image output, with Maven artifacts for core rendering and PDF output. It is appropriate to evaluate for constrained document layouts, not as a drop-in full browser.
Flying Saucer Chrome PDF
The project also documents a separate flying-saucer-chrome-pdf artifact, which delegates PDF generation to chrome-headless-shell and describes support for modern HTML5/CSS3. Do not attribute that browser-backed behavior to traditional Flying Saucer. Verify the artifact’s runtime and deployment needs alongside the project’s current repository documentation.

Java version requirements vary by release
The repository states that Flying Saucer 9.5.0 requires Java 11 or later, 9.6.0 requires Java 17 or later, and 10.0.0 requires Java 21 or later. These are release-specific requirements, not a universal minimum for every artifact or version; confirm the requirement for the exact dependency you adopt.
Playwright Java: use browser rendering for screenshots and PDFs
Playwright Java exposes browser page APIs for screenshots, including element screenshots, and PDF generation. Its API also documents media emulation. This is browser automation through Java, rather than a compact Java layout engine. Consult the Page API and Java release notes for the APIs and current version details.

Choose it when the page depends on JavaScript or browser layout and you need a browser screenshot or PDF. Before adopting it, verify that the browser can be installed and launched in your target host or container, and test the exact media settings and output your application needs.
wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage: a command-line route
The official project overview describes wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage as headless, open-source command-line tools using Qt WebKit to render HTML to PDF and image formats. They may suit an environment that can operate the binaries and where their rendering fidelity is adequate. Your Java application integrates with external command-line software rather than a pure-Java rendering library, so include binary installation and platform support in the deployment evaluation. The overview consulted is older than the other documentation linked here; verify current maintenance and platform compatibility before choosing this route.

How to choose and test a renderer
- Identify the source. Separate application-owned templates from arbitrary live pages. Controlled markup can be adapted to a renderer’s supported subset; public pages may rely on browser features and scripts.
- Choose the required output. Check whether you need PDF, a full-page image, or an image of one element. The documented options differ in their output APIs and rendering model.
- Check the rendering dependencies. For Java libraries, confirm the required Java release and dependencies. For Playwright or the Chrome PDF artifact, confirm browser availability. For wkhtmltopdf/wkhtmltoimage, confirm that the binaries can run on the target platform.
- Prototype representative pages. Include the fonts, SVGs and images, long documents, page breaks, dynamic content, and CSS features that matter to your pages. Compare the output with the intended result rather than relying on the product name or supported-format list.
- Measure your own workload. If throughput or memory determines the choice, benchmark representative pages in the production environment. The project documentation cited here does not establish a comparable performance winner.
Common integration problems and what to check
- Modern CSS is missing or arranged differently: With OpenHTMLtoPDF or traditional Flying Saucer, check whether the markup and styles use features outside the renderer’s supported subset. Adapt controlled templates or evaluate a browser-backed option.
- JavaScript-driven content is absent: OpenHTMLtoPDF does not execute JavaScript. Use a browser-backed renderer if script execution is necessary, and test the page after its dynamic content has loaded.
- A deployment works locally but not in a container: Check the target Java version, browser or binary installation, and whether the process can launch the rendering dependency. Test in the actual production image or host environment.
- A PDF differs from a screenshot: Confirm that the selected API and media settings match the intended output. Playwright’s Page API documents PDF generation and media emulation; render and inspect the exact page in the mode you plan to use.
- The chosen artifact behaves unlike the project’s other renderer: Confirm whether you selected Flying Saucer’s traditional JVM renderer or its separate Chrome PDF artifact; they have different rendering models.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean screenshot from a URL without managing a browser renderer, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the example below saves a WebP screenshot. See the API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Those reasons can matter when you want to avoid browser setup, but validate the result against your page and workflow.
