In Deadlock Labs’ October 4, 2026 ranked-data snapshot, Sinclair, Haze, and Vindicta had negative matchup deltas against Rat King; those are provisional third-party statistics, not guaranteed counters.
What to buy against Rat King
No available source establishes a specific in-game item build that reliably counters Rat King. Rather than treating an unverified shopping list as proven advice, respond to the mechanics and adapt your purchases to the match. Deadlock Labs lists builds and statistics, but its available counter data does not substantiate an item-by-item recommendation: Rat King stats, builds, and counters.
Here, “items” means Deadlock’s digital in-game purchases. The evidence does not support recommending physical gaming gear or merchandise as a counter.
How to play around Rat King’s abilities
Rat Swarm: dash to remove attached rats
Rat Swarm sends rats onto enemies, where they deal spirit damage over time and reduce Bullet Resist with each bite. More attached rats bite faster. The October 3, 2026 patch says a ground or air dash can shake off the rats early. If rats attach, use that stated counterplay rather than assuming ordinary movement will remove them. The October 3 patch notes describe the current playable kit.

Scrap Grenade: melee it away
Scrap Grenade detonates multiple times, dealing bullet damage and slowing. The patch notes say it can be meleed to knock it away; Tier 3 adds a larger final detonation. Keep that response in mind when the grenade is in play rather than treating it as an ordinary projectile to ignore.
Royal Pestments: account for the barrier and bullet deflection
Royal Pestments creates a barrier based on Rat King’s maximum health, and bullets can be returned while the barrier holds. At Tier 3, the ability also caps damage taken per hit and increases the maximum-health conversion to barrier. The available notes do not specify an optimal timing window, item purchase, or exact damage threshold, so avoid assuming that a particular burst sequence is a proven answer.

Rule, Ratannia!: watch the banner’s team effects
Rat King charges and summons a banner. Nearby allies receive movement speed, slow immunity, and reduced incoming damage; the ability summary also describes damage and knock-up/slow effects around the banner event. Treat it as a team-fight disruption and support effect, not just a personal defensive ability.

Deadlock Labs says its matchup deltas are based on ranked matches with at least 50 head-to-head samples, and its displayed metrics refresh every 15 minutes. The same October 4 snapshot reported a 59.4% Rat King win rate across 27,656 tracked matches; that volatile, third-party figure should not be treated as a settled balance assessment. Pick one of these heroes only if it fits your role and the rest of your team. The data indicates observed matchup performance; it does not explain why those matchups are unfavorable or prove that these heroes are universal counter-picks.

Use the current playable kit, not an old fan concept
Rat King became playable in the October 3, 2026 patch as a Brawler with the Sovereign’s Decree weapon and four abilities: Scrap Grenade, Rat Swarm, Royal Pestments, and Rule, Ratannia!. The patch archive is unofficial, so later balance changes should be checked against Valve’s official patch posts when available. An older forum post titled “The Rat king” is a fan concept with a different kit, not evidence about the current playable hero: the older forum concept.
