For most students who want one iPad for reading, handwritten notes and everyday coursework—with the option to add a keyboard—the iPad Air is the strongest all-round starting point. It is not a universal winner: choose the standard iPad to prioritize price, the iPad mini when compactness matters most, and the iPad Pro only when you can identify a specific need for its premium display or performance tier.

Before buying, check your course’s software requirements and your school’s device policy. Some students need a laptop for required desktop software, so an iPad may be a companion rather than a replacement.

Which iPad should a student buy?

Use the Air as a starting point if you want a larger-screen iPad for a mix of reading, note-taking and optional keyboard work. It occupies the middle of Apple’s lineup and comes in 11- and 13-inch classes. That makes it a practical option to investigate when you want one device to serve several study tasks, but the extra cost over the standard iPad may not be worthwhile for light use. This is a recommendation based on Apple’s lineup and listed features, not comparative classroom testing.

  • Choose the standard iPad if keeping the device cost down is your priority and your work is mainly reading, web research, videos, note-taking and school-approved apps.
  • Choose the iPad mini if easy carrying and holding matter more than having a larger canvas for PDFs, split-screen reading or extended typing. Apple lists it in the 8.3-inch class.
  • Consider the iPad Pro if you can name a demanding workflow that benefits from its premium display or performance tier. Apple’s product page lists an advanced display and M5 chip; ordinary coursework alone does not establish a need for Pro.

Check course requirements before choosing a size or model

Start with the apps and tasks your course actually requires, rather than assuming every student needs the same device. Check whether required software is available for iPad and whether your school permits it for coursework or exams. If desktop software or a school-specified device is required, plan for a laptop or another approved computer; an iPad can still be useful alongside it.

Then weigh screen area against portability. The mini is the compact choice, while Air and Pro offer 11- and 13-inch classes. A larger screen can provide more room for documents and multitasking, while a smaller one is easier to carry and hold. Apple notes that diagonal measurements vary by model, so confirm the exact model’s dimensions rather than treating a screen-class label as an exact measurement. See Apple’s iPad model comparison.

Budget for accessories as well as the iPad

A Pencil and keyboard are optional, not automatic requirements for a student setup. A Pencil can help with handwritten notes and marking up documents; a keyboard may be useful for longer typing. Add them only if they fit how you study, since each purchase raises the total cost.

Compatibility is model-specific. Before ordering, match the exact iPad generation and size to Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility guide. Apple’s comparison page also lists keyboard support by iPad family. Check the precise keyboard model and language or layout as well as the iPad size; do not assume that Apple Pencil Pro, another Pencil, or a keyboard works with every iPad.

Choose storage and connectivity for your actual use

There is no single storage amount established here as right for every student. Consider the documents, downloaded readings, creative projects and apps you expect to keep on the device, and whether you routinely rely on internet access away from Wi-Fi before choosing storage and Wi-Fi or cellular configuration. The right choice depends on your files and connectivity needs.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Confirm requirements: Check course software, school policy and any exam or classroom device rules.
  2. Set the complete budget: Include any Pencil or keyboard you genuinely expect to use, not just the iPad’s starting price.
  3. Pick your size priority: Favor the mini for compactness, or compare the Air and Pro screen classes if you need more room.
  4. Match accessories exactly: Verify Pencil and keyboard compatibility against the specific iPad model, generation and size.
  5. Verify the current offer: Check your country’s education pricing, eligibility and promotion terms at checkout.

What the recommendation does—and does not—mean

The Air is a sensible all-round place to start for a student seeking one device for reading, handwriting and optional typing; the standard iPad is the cost-first direction, the mini prioritizes portability, and the Pro is the premium tier. These are distinctions within Apple’s current lineup, not proof that one model improves student outcomes or wins for every course. No student-outcome effect or universal best choice is established by the available product information.
