Orshot describes an iframe or React/Vue component and says it provides storage, accounts, and rendering. IMG.LY CE.SDK is a different architecture: you install an SDK in your application and operate the surrounding infrastructure. Polotno is another self-hosted SDK option. Decide first whether you want the vendor to run the editor service or your team to own the runtime, data flows, and deployment.
Hosted embed versus an in-product SDK
“Hosted” and “embedded” are not opposites. An editor can be embedded in your interface through an iframe while the editor service remains on the vendor’s infrastructure. An SDK can also be embedded visually, but its code runs inside your application and infrastructure.

- What happens if the hosted service is unavailable or you need to export all design data?

2. IMG.LY CE.SDK: choose control over hosting
IMG.LY describes CE.SDK as an editor embedded in your app rather than a hosted iframe. Its capability material says the editor runs on your domain and infrastructure, supports a full interface as well as a headless API, and can use storage, digital-asset-management or CDN services you select. Browser editing uses WebAssembly and WebGL; the same engine is described for mobile and server-side use with Node.js.
IMG.LY’s own wording is: “The editor runs inside your app, not as a sandboxed third-party surface, so you own the UI, the domain, and the data.” Treat that as the vendor’s description, not an independent assessment.
Why teams select CE.SDK
- One product strategy can span web, iOS, Android, desktop and server environments, subject to the support of the specific SDK and license.
- You can decide how assets, design documents and exports move through your systems.
- A full UI and headless API support both end-user editing and automated workflows.
- Your application controls navigation, identity, permissions and surrounding business logic.
Costs and licensing
IMG.LY’s current pricing page says licensing is customized by platform, components and AI features and directs buyers to request a quote. It also advertises a 30-day free trial with a trial key. Because the final price depends on scope, do not compare it with Orshot’s “from $39/mo” statement as if they were equivalent plans. Confirm which platforms, editor components, AI features, support terms and deployment rights are in your quote.

3. Polotno SDK: a web-first self-hosted option
Polotno describes its SDK as self-hosted creative infrastructure for web products. Its comparison material says rendering can run in the browser, under Node, or through an optional Polotno Cloud Render API. Its SaaS page emphasizes customer control over templates, assets, design data, permissions and rendering.
Where Polotno fits
- Your product is primarily web-based and needs design or image editing.
- You want control over the data model and rendering path without adopting a broad native-platform stack.
- You may render in-browser or on Node and want an optional cloud renderer.
Polotno’s pages position it as web-focused while positioning IMG.LY as broader across native platforms. Treat that as vendor positioning and verify current platform support, feature limits and pricing for your project.
How to choose among the three
Choose a hosted embed when
- Time to first integration matters more than owning every service.
- Your product is browser-first and an iframe or framework component meets the UX requirement.
- You are comfortable making the editor, storage and rendering dependent on a provider.
Choose IMG.LY CE.SDK when
- You need a consistent editing engine across web, mobile, desktop or server workflows.
- Your security, domain, data-residency or customization requirements favor running inside your infrastructure.
- You have engineering capacity for authentication, storage, rendering, updates and observability.
Choose Polotno when
- Your core use case is a web SaaS editor.
- You want self-hosted control and flexible browser, Node or optional cloud rendering.
- Native mobile or desktop delivery is not a primary requirement.
A practical evaluation plan
- Write the platform matrix. List browser, iOS, Android, desktop, server-side rendering and offline requirements. Mark each as must-have or optional.
- Define the data boundary. Identify who owns source designs, uploaded media, templates, exports, user accounts and deletion requests.
- Prototype the hardest workflow. Test your largest files, custom fonts, video timelines, template permissions, autosave and export formats—not only the basic canvas.

- Review exit and continuity. Confirm whether designs can be exported in a documented format and how your service behaves during provider downtime or an account cancellation.
Common failure modes and fixes
The iframe cannot communicate with your app
Cross-origin restrictions, an incorrect origin allowlist or an overly strict Content Security Policy are common causes. Configure the provider’s documented parent origins, allow only the required frame and connect through the supported postMessage or component API. Do not disable browser security globally.

Uploads work locally but fail in production
Check object-storage CORS rules, maximum request size, signed-URL expiry, MIME-type validation and the production domain allowlist. Log request IDs without logging private asset contents.
Exports differ between browser and server
Font availability, WebGL/WebAssembly support, color profiles and image/video codecs can change output. Pin fonts and engine versions, test the same assets in every target runtime and define an acceptable rendering tolerance.
Large projects feel slow
Profile asset dimensions, number of layers, video duration and autosave frequency. Use thumbnails and lazy loading, move heavy rendering to a worker or server path where supported, and avoid uploading the original file repeatedly for each edit.

Ask for a written scope covering platforms, components, AI features, production domains, staging environments, seats, volume limits, support and renewal terms. A public trial or starting price is not a complete production quote.
