The best OBS recording hotkeys are the ones you can press deliberately without triggering shortcuts in the app you’re recording. Set them in Settings > Hotkeys: find Start Recording and Stop Recording, then assign a distinct key or key combination to each. OBS does not prescribe one universal recording shortcut, so check the bindings in your installed version rather than relying on a supposed default.
Set up recording hotkeys in OBS

Open OBS Studio and select Settings > Hotkeys.

Find the Start Recording action and click its hotkey field. Press the key or combination you want to use.

Repeat for Stop Recording, choosing a binding that is easy to distinguish from the start binding.

If your workflow needs it and your OBS build shows the action, assign a separate binding to Pause Recording.

Select Apply or OK to save the settings, then make a short test recording. Check that the file was created, the audio is present, and the stop binding works before relying on it for an important session.
OBS also lets you assign hotkeys to actions such as switching scenes, showing or hiding sources, push-to-talk or mute, and Replay Buffer controls. Add only the actions you need; too many bindings can make a setup harder to remember. Labels and available actions can vary by release, so use the Hotkeys screen in your installed build as the authority.
Choose a binding that works in your workflow
There is no objectively best key combination for every keyboard, operating system, or captured application. Pick bindings that are comfortable to reach, memorable, and unlikely to be intercepted by the software on screen. A combination involving a modifier may reduce accidental presses, but check that the captured app does not use the same shortcut for an important command.

Make start and stop distinct. Avoid bindings that differ by only a subtle or easily missed key if that could cause you to stop a recording by mistake.

Consider what is being recorded. A shortcut that works on the desktop may also activate a command in a game, editor, or presentation app.

Test the whole sequence. Start, pause if applicable, resume, and stop a brief recording, then verify the saved file and audio.

Keep a recovery route. If a hotkey is intercepted or forgotten, OBS’s on-screen controls remain available while the application is open.
Recording hotkeys are not the same as OBS default shortcuts
OBS’s published Keyboard Shortcuts page documents general commands and editing shortcuts for the Sources list and Preview. For example, its Windows/Linux entries include Ctrl+F to fit a source to the screen, Ctrl+S to stretch it to the screen, and Ctrl+D to center it; the macOS column uses the corresponding Command-key combinations. These are source or preview editing shortcuts, not universal start- or stop-recording keys.

Recording controls are configurable through Settings > Hotkeys, as described in the OBS Overview Guide. Do not assume an internet list of default editing shortcuts tells you which recording bindings are set on your computer: inspect the recording actions in your own Hotkeys screen.
Use Replay Buffer for recent footage, not a full-session recording
Replay Buffer is a different workflow from ordinary recording. It keeps a buffer so you can save a recent segment rather than necessarily saving an entire session from its beginning. OBS provides separate hotkey actions to start and stop the buffer and to save it. To save a replay, enable Replay Buffer and assign its save hotkey; assigning a save key alone is not enough.
If you want a continuous capture from the moment you begin until you stop, use the regular recording controls. If you want to save a recent moment from a running buffer, configure Replay Buffer and test its save action so you know how much footage it captures in your setup.
Choose between an in-app hotkey and startup automation

The OBS Launch Parameters page documents --startrecording to start recording when OBS launches and --startreplaybuffer to start Replay Buffer. These are startup options, not keyboard shortcuts: they act when OBS is opened with the parameter, rather than when you press a binding in an already running OBS session.

Use a joystick button as a hotkey
OBS’s Overview Guide describes mapping joystick buttons to common keyboard keys with antimicro on Linux and Windows. In that arrangement, the joystick button sends a keyboard input that OBS can use as a hotkey. Because behavior depends on the mapping and the local setup, test each assigned action in OBS before using it during a recording.

The key does nothing: Reopen Settings > Hotkeys and confirm the intended action still has the binding you expect. Try a short test with OBS focused, then check whether the captured application or another utility is using the same combination.

The wrong action runs: Review the start, stop, pause, and Replay Buffer fields individually. Assign distinct combinations and test them one by one.

Replay footage is not saved: Check that Replay Buffer is enabled and that a save hotkey is assigned. The save action is separate from starting and stopping the buffer.

Recording does not begin when OBS opens: Confirm that OBS is launched with
--startrecording. A launch parameter is not an in-app hotkey and will not start a recording merely because it exists in the Hotkeys settings. -
The interface differs from a guide: OBS documentation pages may describe a different release from the one installed. Check the action names and bindings in your build’s Hotkeys screen instead of assuming every version presents identical controls.
