Tenebris Somnia is the strongest exact match for a horror game that combines pixel-art gameplay with filmed live-action video. It is a 2D retro survival-horror adventure in which hand-drawn pixel art carries the interactive sections while real actors, locations and practical effects appear in live-action cutscenes. The other games in this guide are useful comparisons or adjacent recommendations, but they do not all use filmed live action in the same way.

What counts as a pixel-art and live-action horror game?

The phrase can describe several very different designs. A game may use pixel art for exploration and combat, then switch to a filmed scene with actors. It may instead use pre-rendered footage as a visual style, pair pixel art with rotoscoped animation, or simply be a pixel-art horror game with no video component at all. Those distinctions matter if you are looking for the specific contrast between deliberately limited game graphics and unsettling real-world imagery.

This guide uses four tests:

  • Pixel-art gameplay: the playable sections use a clearly pixel-based visual presentation rather than merely a low-resolution filter.
  • Filmed or video-based horror: real actors, locations and practical effects appear on screen, or the game makes a clearly identified FMV-style presentation central to its identity.
  • Meaningful horror fit: the game belongs to horror rather than using a few dark scenes in an otherwise unrelated genre.
  • Useful availability: the recommendation identifies the platforms or edition information established for that game.

On those terms, Tenebris Somnia is the only title in the shortlist that satisfies the brief without qualification. Dying Breed is an adjacent FMV-and-pixel option, FAITH: The Unholy Trinity is an important retro-horror comparison using rotoscoped animation, and They Bleed Pixels is relevant only if you broaden the request to pixel-art horror generally.

They Bleed Pixels Distinctive pixel-art platforming No live-action video Lovecraft-inspired horror action platformer Broad pixel-horror option Steam

“Adjacent” is intentional. None of the last three should be presented as another Tenebris Somnia-style game without explaining the difference in medium, genre or interaction.

1. Tenebris Somnia — the exact match

Tenebris Somnia is a 2D retro survival-horror adventure built around a sharp visual interruption: you play through pixel-art scenes, then encounter live-action footage made with real performers and physical locations. The official description identifies it as a “2D retro survival horror adventure game with live action cutscenes.” Xbox Wire describes director Andrés Borghi’s approach as combining art drawn pixel by pixel with real actors, real locations and practical effects.

That combination is more specific than simply calling the game “retro” or “FMV.” The pixel art is not a decorative overlay on conventional video, and the filmed material is not just a marketing trailer. The two modes are part of the game’s presentation: interactive horror is deliberately constrained to a 2D pixel language, while the filmed scenes introduce human faces, physical spaces and effects that can feel unexpectedly tangible by comparison.

How the game plays

The core structure is an adventure with puzzles, creature encounters and story discovery. The PlayStation listing classifies it as single-player horror. That makes it a better fit for players seeking tension, investigation and contrast between scenes than for players looking for a competitive or cooperative horror game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The live-action material is described as cutscenes, so it should be understood primarily as linear story presentation rather than a branching evidence system or a fully interactive video interface. If your ideal game lets you manipulate filmed footage as the main mechanic, this is not established by the available descriptions. Its distinctive appeal is the transition between playable pixel art and filmed horror.

Why the contrast works

  • Pixel art controls what you can see: simplified forms and limited animation leave room for the player’s imagination.
  • Live action restores physical detail: actors, locations and practical effects make the horror suddenly recognizable as something filmed in a real space.
  • The change in medium becomes part of the scare: the surprise comes from moving between two visual rules rather than from a single uniform style.
  • The adventure format gives the contrast context: puzzles and exploration provide a reason to move through the world before a filmed scene changes its emotional register.

This is the recommendation to choose if your search terms are “pixel horror with real actors,” “pixel games with live-action cutscenes” or “survival horror that switches to filmed video.”

Platforms and release timing

The official platform guide lists Steam and GOG on PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The PlayStation and Nintendo store listings independently confirm console availability. Those listings show a release date of 16 October 2026; as of 19 October 2026, that date has passed.

Platform editions can differ by storefront and region, so confirm the listing for your specific console before buying. The platform list establishes where the game is offered, but it does not establish identical prices, languages, performance targets or save compatibility across every edition.

Who should play it?

  • Choose it if the medium switch itself is a major part of what attracts you to horror.
  • Choose it if you want a single-player adventure with puzzles rather than a multiplayer format.
  • Choose it if practical effects and filmed locations sound more appealing than purely abstract pixel scares.
  • Look elsewhere if you specifically require branching FMV decisions, online play or a strategy game structure; those features are not established for Tenebris Somnia.

2. Dying Breed — the closest FMV-and-pixel neighbor

PC Gamer describes Dying Breed as a horror post-apocalypse game with Command & Conquer-style FMV cutscenes and chunky top-down pixel art. It belongs on this list because it combines two visibly different presentation modes: a pixel-based game world and filmed-video sequences.

The qualification is important. Dying Breed’s presentation is described as strategy-game-like, not as a conventional survival-horror adventure. Its horror is post-apocalyptic, and the top-down pixel view gives it a different rhythm from a puzzle-focused 2D horror game. Expect the contrast between a tactical-looking pixel interface and FMV scenes rather than the specific live-action survival-horror identity of Tenebris Somnia.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it may suit you

  • You want FMV to evoke the distinctive presentation associated with classic real-time strategy games.
  • You prefer a top-down, chunky pixel look to hand-drawn cinematic pixel art.
  • You are comfortable with post-apocalyptic horror instead of supernatural or traditional survival-horror framing.

It is best labeled an adjacent recommendation because the available description does not establish the same combination of live actors, practical effects and puzzle-adventure structure documented for Tenebris Somnia.

3. FAITH: The Unholy Trinity — the key retro-horror comparison

FAITH: The Unholy Trinity is not a live-action game, but it is an important comparison for understanding why Tenebris Somnia looks the way it does. Tenebris Somnia director Andrés Borghi has named Airdorf Games’ FAITH as the first inspiration for creating his game: “The first thing that inspired me to create Tenebris Somnia was the video game FAITH by Airdorf Games.”

FAITH uses a retro horror presentation with rotoscoped animation as its second visual mode. Rotoscoping traces or animates movement in a way that can look disturbingly lifelike, but it is still animation rather than footage of actors performing in filmed locations. That difference is exactly why FAITH belongs in the comparison section, not in the exact-match slot.

What the comparison tells you

If you like FAITH for its stark retro imagery, abrupt movement and supernatural unease, Tenebris Somnia may appeal because it carries a related interest in visual contrast into live-action filmmaking. If your priority is real people and physical sets on camera, however, FAITH does not satisfy that requirement. Its value here is as an artistic ancestor and a retro-horror alternative, not as a game with live-action cutscenes.

4. They Bleed Pixels — include only for broad pixel horror searches

Steam describes They Bleed Pixels as a Lovecraft-inspired horror platformer rendered in a distinctive pixel-art style. It is a useful recommendation when someone asks for pixel horror in general, but it does not use live-action video.

The game therefore changes the emphasis from medium contrast to control and movement. A platformer’s moment-to-moment challenge is fundamentally different from an adventure built around puzzles, exploration and filmed story scenes. Include it in a broad “pixel horror games” list, but do not describe it as a live-action or FMV counterpart to Tenebris Somnia.

How to choose among these games

Start with the visual requirement

If “real actors on screen” is non-negotiable, start with Tenebris Somnia. Dying Breed is the alternative when FMV-style presentation matters but the game’s post-apocalyptic, strategy-like identity is acceptable. FAITH is the choice for animated retro horror, and They Bleed Pixels is the choice for pixel-art horror platforming without a video component.

Choose by horror structure

If you want… Start with… Reason
Survival-horror adventure, puzzles and filmed scenes Tenebris Somnia It is the documented exact match.
Post-apocalyptic horror with FMV and top-down pixel presentation Dying Breed Its described identity is strategy-like and post-apocalyptic.
Supernatural retro horror with animated movement FAITH: The Unholy Trinity Its second visual mode is rotoscoped animation.
Lovecraft-inspired pixel platforming They Bleed Pixels It focuses on platforming and pixel-art horror, without live action.

Choose by the role of video

Tenebris Somnia uses live action as cutscene presentation around the playable adventure. Dying Breed uses FMV cutscenes in a presentation compared with Command & Conquer. Neither description establishes that filmed footage is the primary interface or that scenes branch according to player evidence choices. That distinction helps avoid buying an atmospheric cutscene-driven game when you wanted an interactive FMV mystery.

Buying and platform checklist

  1. Confirm the medium: verify that the listing describes live-action cutscenes if filmed actors are essential to your choice.
  2. Confirm the platform: Tenebris Somnia is listed for PC through Steam and GOG, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
  3. Check the edition: physical information is documented for Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox, with limited print runs of 1,500, 1,000 and 500 respectively.
  4. Check current stock and price: the print-run figures do not establish what remains available or what a seller currently charges.
  5. Match the genre: select Tenebris Somnia for survival-horror adventure, Dying Breed for post-apocalyptic FMV strategy flavor, FAITH for animated supernatural retro horror, or They Bleed Pixels for platforming.

Common misconceptions about this niche

“FMV” always means interactive video

Not necessarily. In the descriptions available here, live-action or FMV material is identified as cutscenes. That tells you the footage is part of the narrative presentation, not that you will make choices inside the video or investigate footage frame by frame.

Rotoscoped animation is the same as live action

It is not. Rotoscoping can reproduce human movement with an uncanny realism, but the result remains animation. FAITH is therefore a retro-horror comparison rather than a game featuring filmed actors and locations.

Any pixel-art horror game belongs in the exact-match list

Pixel art alone is not enough. They Bleed Pixels demonstrates why: it is a legitimate pixel-horror game, yet it has no live-action video. A useful list should separate exact matches from games that share only one part of the request.

Verdict

For the specific request “What horror games mix pixel art with live-action cutscenes?”, play Tenebris Somnia first. It is the only title here documented as a 2D retro survival-horror adventure that pairs pixel-by-pixel artwork with filmed actors, locations and practical effects. Add Dying Breed if you want a post-apocalyptic, top-down FMV variation; choose FAITH: The Unholy Trinity if animated retro horror is acceptable; and use They Bleed Pixels only when the live-action requirement can be dropped.
