Best overall: Emporia Vue 3 Home Energy Monitor. It combines stated ±2% accuracy, one-second real-time readings, solar monitoring, and enough current-transformer (CT) inputs to measure a whole panel plus many individual circuits. Choose the Shelly 3EM instead when your priority is three-phase measurement and threshold alerts.

A monitor can show where electrical demand rises, but it cannot by itself measure gas, oil, propane, duct leakage, missing insulation, or heat escaping through the building envelope. Use it to identify electrical loads, then combine those readings with thermostat runtime, fuel bills, and—when the numbers do not match—a professional whole-house energy evaluation.

Which home energy monitor should you buy?

The right device depends on the question you need answered. A mains-only meter tells you how much electricity the home uses. Circuit-level CTs help identify whether electric resistance heat, a heat pump, water heater, dryer, EV charger, or another circuit is creating a peak. Three-phase properties need a compatible three-phase meter. Homes heated mainly by gas, oil, or propane need more than an electricity monitor to explain their total heating cost.

Need Best fit Why Important qualification
Whole-home electricity and many branch circuits Emporia Vue 3 ±2% stated accuracy, one-second data, solar monitoring, up to three 200A mains CT channels and sixteen 50A branch CT channels Verify phase configuration, voltage limits, CT ratings, panel space, and local installation rules before purchase.
Three-phase monitoring with threshold notifications Shelly 3EM Designed to monitor a whole home, circuit, or appliance in real time and notify you when consumption crosses a preset threshold Use the specified Shelly CT ecosystem; its support documentation warns that substituting another brand’s CTs can make measurements inaccurate or unreliable.
Heating cost dominated by gas, oil, or propane Monitor plus professional energy evaluation The monitor covers electric equipment while an evaluation can inspect fuel use, insulation, air sealing, ducts, and HVAC condition No electricity monitor alone can establish the cause of envelope or combustion-system losses.
Runtime feedback and automatic temperature control Monitor plus an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat Thermostat feedback and schedules complement circuit measurements A thermostat controls settings; it does not replace a building-envelope or HVAC assessment.

What an energy monitor can—and cannot—measure

Whole-home versus branch-circuit data

A sensor on the service mains reports the home’s combined electrical demand. That is useful for finding an overnight baseload, confirming whether a heat pump is running, and comparing daily or weather-adjusted electricity use. It cannot identify which appliance created a peak unless you add sensors to individual circuits.

Branch CTs turn a total into a set of questions you can test: Did the electric furnace or auxiliary heat run overnight? Is a water heater reheating during an expensive period? Does an EV charger overlap with heating demand? Is a dryer or workshop circuit responsible for a short, high spike? Label each measured circuit so the chart has a useful name rather than a channel number.

Electrical heating is only one part of household energy

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that space heating and air conditioning together represented 52% of U.S. household annual energy consumption in 2020. That statistic covers energy, not just electricity. An electricity monitor sees electric resistance elements, heat-pump compressors, air handlers, circulation pumps, and controls; it does not directly see gas burned in a furnace, oil delivered to a boiler, propane in a tank, or heat lost through walls and ducts.

The U.S. Department of Energy says heating and cooling uses more energy than any other home system and estimates that 43% of a typical home utility bill goes to those functions. DOE guidance says maintenance, upgrades, insulation, air sealing, and thermostat changes can cut heating and cooling use by 20% to 50%. Those are potential reductions from a package of actions, not savings guaranteed by purchasing a monitor.

A monitor is a diagnostic aid, not an audit

Meter data can establish when an electrical load operates and how large it is. It cannot by itself determine whether a furnace is correctly sized, whether ducts leak, whether insulation is adequate, or whether air is infiltrating around windows and penetrations. DOE’s whole-house weatherization approach examines the envelope, HVAC system, electrical system, and electric-baseload appliances. Arrange that type of evaluation when your heating bill is high but electrical readings do not explain it.

Emporia Vue 3: best all-rounder for circuit-level visibility

Emporia’s 2024 technical specification lists ±2% measurement accuracy and real-time data at one-second intervals. The Vue 3 can support up to three 200A mains channels and sixteen 50A branch channels, allowing one installation to cover whole-home demand and a substantial set of circuits. Emporia’s product collection also lists configurations for whole-home, three-phase, flexible sensors, solar, alerts, and EV-charger-compatible monitoring.

Vue 3 capability Published detail What it means in practice
Accuracy ±2% (Emporia, 2024 technical specification) Suitable for comparing loads and trends; small differences should not be treated as utility-bill-grade precision.
Data granularity One-second real-time data Helps reveal cycling, start-up events, and overlapping loads rather than only daily totals.
Main channels Up to three 200A CT channels Provides capacity for supported single-, split-, or three-phase arrangements; confirm your service type.
Branch channels Up to sixteen 50A CT channels Lets you isolate high-impact circuits, subject to the CT rating and installation requirements.
Monitoring options Whole-home, three-phase, flexible-sensor, solar, alert, and EV-charger configurations are listed Select only the sensors and configuration your panel and equipment support.

Why it is the default recommendation

For a typical electrically heated or mixed-fuel home, the combination of mains and branch readings answers more useful questions than a whole-home total alone. You can establish the home’s baseline, watch the heat-pump or electric-furnace circuit, compare auxiliary heat with milder-weather operation, and see whether an EV charger or water heater overlaps with a heating peak.

Checks before ordering

  • Identify whether the service is single-phase, split-phase, or three-phase and confirm that the chosen Vue 3 configuration supports it.
  • Check the panel’s voltage and available physical space against Emporia’s current technical documentation; exact limits and installation details vary by configuration.
  • Match each branch circuit to a CT with the correct rating. A 50A branch sensor is not a substitute for a sensor or installation method specified for a larger feeder.
  • Decide which circuits matter most. Sixteen channels can be used quickly in a large panel, so prioritize heating equipment, water heating, EV charging, solar, and unusual baseloads.
  • Plan for a qualified electrician where local code, panel access, or your comfort level requires it. CT installation involves working inside an electrical panel.

Shelly 3EM: best for three-phase homes and threshold alerts

Shelly describes the 3EM as a professional three-phase meter that can monitor the consumption of each circuit, appliance, or the whole home in real time. Its threshold-alert function can notify you when consumption crosses a preset level, which is useful for detecting an unexpectedly running heater, a missed shutoff, or a load that exceeds a chosen limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to choose it

  • Your property has a three-phase service and you need a meter designed for that arrangement.
  • You want an alert when demand passes a defined threshold instead of reviewing charts manually.
  • You are integrating measurements into a broader smart-home or automation setup and have confirmed the required connectivity and data-access method.

CT compatibility is not optional

Shelly’s support documentation warns that replacing its specified CTs with another brand’s sensors can produce inaccurate or unreliable measurements. Use the CT types and wiring method documented for the exact 3EM version. Confirm the meter’s phase arrangement, panel space, network requirements, and local electrical-code obligations before installation.

How to choose by wiring, resolution, and data needs

Decision point Questions to answer Why it changes the choice
Service type Is the home single-phase, split-phase, or three-phase? Every meter and CT arrangement has supported phase configurations; a mismatch can invalidate readings.
Resolution Do you need only total demand, or the circuits driving it? Mains-only monitoring cannot attribute a peak; branch CTs provide circuit-level evidence.
Heating system Is heat electric, a heat pump, or fuel-fired? Electric equipment can be measured directly; fuel use and envelope losses require other evidence.
Sensor capacity How many mains and branch channels are needed? Count heating, cooling, water-heating, EV, solar, and other priority circuits before buying.
Alerts Do you need a notification at a demand threshold? Threshold alerts can surface abnormal operation without constant chart review.
Data access Will you use a vendor app, local network, cloud service, or automation platform? Connectivity and retention differ by product and configuration; verify current documentation for your intended workflow.
Installation Can the panel accommodate CTs and the meter safely? Panel work may require a licensed electrician and compliance with local code.

Install and configure a monitor safely

Do not open an energized panel or improvise CT wiring. If you are not trained and legally permitted to perform the work, have a qualified electrician install and verify the system.

  1. Document the service. Record the panel rating, phase arrangement, main-breaker size, major loads, solar equipment, and available panel space. Photograph circuit labels with the cover closed.
  2. Choose the exact configuration. Match the monitor’s mains channels, branch CT ratings, voltage limits, and phase support to the documented service. Do not assume a model sold for one wiring arrangement supports another.
  3. Install the meter and CTs according to the manufacturer’s diagram. CT orientation and conductor placement matter; an incorrectly oriented sensor can reverse or distort the reported direction of power.
  4. Connect the required communications path. Complete the manufacturer’s setup for the app or local network and confirm that timestamps, units, and time zone are correct before collecting a baseline.
  5. Verify against a known load. Turn on a predictable appliance or heating stage briefly and check that the expected channel responds. Compare the whole-home reading with the utility meter over a suitable interval; small differences are normal because of timing, measurement accuracy, and unmeasured circuits.
  6. Label every channel. Use the breaker number and a plain-language description such as heat pump, air handler, water heater, or EV charger. Record which physical conductor each CT measures.
  7. Check for impossible results. Negative consumption where none is expected, a permanently zero channel, or a branch reading larger than its circuit rating indicates an installation or configuration problem that should be corrected before analysis.

Use the monitor to find heating and electricity waste

1. Establish a representative baseline

Collect data through several cold and mild days rather than judging a single evening. Note outdoor conditions, thermostat settings, occupancy, cooking, laundry, hot-water use, and vehicle charging. Compare monitor totals with utility bills for the same billing period. A bill validates the scale of the data; it does not identify the individual loads.

2. Label and rank the largest circuits

Look for sustained demand, repeated starts, and long overnight runs. A resistance heater may appear as a relatively steady high load while a heat pump cycles. An air-handler blower, circulation pump, or electric backup stage can run at times that are not obvious from the thermostat display. Rank circuits by energy over a day or week, not only by the tallest instantaneous spike.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Compare operation with schedules

Pair the monitor’s timestamps with thermostat runtime and occupancy schedules. A heating circuit that runs while the home is empty may indicate an aggressive schedule, a thermostat-location problem, a stuck relay, or a building that loses heat rapidly. The data identifies a pattern to investigate; it does not prove which cause applies.

4. Test one change at a time

Adjust a schedule, service a filter, correct a control setting, or investigate an identified circuit, then compare a similarly weathered period. Keep a log of the change and the dates. Weather-adjusted comparisons are more meaningful than comparing a warm week with a cold one.

5. Escalate when electricity does not explain the bill

If fuel costs rise while electrical heating circuits remain stable, investigate the fuel-fired equipment, delivery quantity, combustion performance, ducts, insulation, and air leakage. A professional energy evaluation can use measurements and inspections that a panel monitor cannot provide.

Recognize common heating signatures

Pattern in monitor data Possible interpretation Next check
Large, steady load during cold periods Electric resistance heat or an auxiliary stage may be active. Confirm the circuit label, thermostat staging, outdoor temperature, and equipment documentation.
Regular cycling with variable duration Heat-pump or furnace operation is responding to changing demand. Compare cycle length with thermostat runtime, filter condition, and outdoor conditions.
Heating circuit runs after the thermostat reaches its setpoint Control, sensor, relay, or equipment issue is possible. Check thermostat logs and have an HVAC professional inspect controls if the pattern persists.
High overnight baseload with no heating circuit rise Another appliance, standby load, pump, or charger may be operating. Turn off likely circuits one at a time where safe, or add branch CTs to isolate them.
High heating bill but little electrical change Fuel use, envelope leakage, duct loss, or billing conditions may dominate. Review fuel bills and arrange a whole-house energy evaluation.

Pair monitoring with thermostat feedback

An ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat must, under its key product criteria, “Give residents some form of feedback about the energy consequences of their settings.” That feedback can show how a schedule or setpoint affects runtime, while the energy monitor measures the electrical consequence on the relevant circuit. Use both systems for different jobs: the thermostat manages comfort and runtime; the monitor verifies electrical demand and helps expose unusual loads.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Buying a whole-home meter when you need attribution. Add branch CTs for the circuits that create the decision you need to make; otherwise the data will show a peak without its source.
  • Assuming all heating is electrical. Check fuel bills and equipment type. A gas furnace or oil boiler can waste energy without producing a corresponding electrical signature.
  • Installing the wrong phase configuration. Confirm service type and the meter’s supported arrangement before installation. Incorrect phase mapping can make totals misleading.
  • Using incompatible CTs. Follow the manufacturer’s specified sensor ecosystem, especially with the Shelly 3EM, whose documentation warns about substituted CTs.
  • Ignoring CT orientation and labels. Follow the wiring diagram, verify polarity, and document each channel while the panel is accessible.
  • Treating one cold day as proof. Collect representative periods and compare weather-adjusted intervals.
  • Expecting a guaranteed payback. No universal dollar saving is attributable solely to buying a monitor. Savings depend on the load discovered and the corrective action taken.
  • Doing live-panel work without the right qualification. Use a qualified electrician when required by local code or when you cannot verify the installation safely.

What to verify before purchase

Prices, inventory, sellers, commissions, and geographic program availability change frequently, so verify those details at the time of purchase. More important than a temporary price is whether the system fits your service and answers your intended question.

  • Supported phase arrangement and voltage range for your panel.
  • Number, amperage rating, and physical size of mains and branch CTs.
  • Whether solar production, battery circuits, EV charging, or three-phase loads require a specific configuration.
  • Real-time interval, historical retention, export options, and any cloud or network dependency required by your workflow.
  • Alert functions, notification limits, and whether thresholds apply to whole-home or individual circuits.
  • Electrical-code requirements, panel clearance, and whether installation must be completed by a licensed professional.

Decision guide

Choose Emporia Vue 3 when…

You want one system to measure total electricity and a broad set of branch circuits, your service matches a supported configuration, and you need fine-grained data to investigate electric heating, solar, EV charging, or unusual baseloads. Its published ±2% accuracy and one-second data make it the strongest general-purpose choice in this comparison.

Choose Shelly 3EM when…

Your home or building uses three-phase power, threshold notifications are central to your workflow, and you are prepared to use the specified CTs and connectivity setup. Confirm the exact model documentation before installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a monitor plus an energy evaluation when…

Heating is primarily fuel-fired, the bill is high without a matching electrical load, or you need answers about insulation, air leakage, ducts, combustion equipment, or HVAC condition. The monitor can contribute useful operating data, but the evaluation supplies the missing building and fuel information.

Bottom line

For most homes seeking a detailed view of electricity and electrically driven heating, the Emporia Vue 3 is the best all-rounder because it combines broad CT capacity, one-second readings, solar support, and stated ±2% accuracy. The Shelly 3EM is the more targeted choice for three-phase monitoring and threshold alerts. Whichever meter you install, treat its charts as evidence for the next inspection or adjustment—not as a substitute for checking fuel use, the building envelope, HVAC condition, and safe installation.
