Its official documentation covers both screenshot capture and saving authenticated browser state for later contexts. Puppeteer is also a viable choice, especially if your project already uses it. This is a documentation-based recommendation, not a benchmark: there is no universal performance winner established here.
What “cookie-protected” means for a screenshot
A screenshot command does not authenticate a browser by itself. The browser must first reach the page with a valid session, whether that means completing a login or loading authentication state saved from an earlier session. A screenshot taken without that state may show a login screen, access-denied page, or consent prompt instead of the intended content.
Two kinds of authentication are worth distinguishing:
- Application-level login: the website establishes a session through cookies and possibly other browser storage after you sign in. Reuse suitable saved state or inject the necessary cookies.
- HTTP authentication: the server challenges the browser for credentials at the HTTP layer. Configure HTTP credentials in the browser context rather than treating them as an application session cookie.
Which approach works depends on how the particular site authenticates users and whether the session remains valid.

Why Playwright is the default pick
Playwright’s documented workflow brings together the two central tasks: capturing screenshots and saving authenticated browser state after login for reuse in later browser contexts. That makes it a practical starting point for a new workflow whose main requirement is repeatable screenshots of pages that require an account session.
Its screenshot API supports viewport captures, full-page captures, and screenshots of a selected element. Playwright also documents state reuse for cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication. A site that depends on session storage needs separate handling; saved state is not a guarantee that every site’s login will persist.

How to reuse an authenticated session with Playwright
The example below uses Playwright’s Python API. It signs in once, saves browser state, then loads that state in a new context to capture the protected page. Replace the example URLs, selectors, and credentials with values appropriate to your own site. The login flow is site-specific; the example assumes a conventional username-and-password form.
- Install Playwright and its browser:

Storage-state edge cases
- Session storage: Playwright’s documented storage-state reuse does not automatically cover every site’s session-storage behavior. If the page depends on session storage, use the separate handling described in Playwright’s authentication documentation.
- Expiry and revocation: saved cookies and tokens can expire, be revoked, or be invalidated by a site policy. Re-authenticate and save fresh state when a previously working capture returns to a login page.
- HTTP authentication: when the server uses HTTP credentials, configure the browser context’s HTTP credentials rather than assuming that an application cookie will satisfy the challenge.
- Consent and other overlays: a valid login session does not necessarily dismiss cookie-consent banners, newsletter prompts, or chat widgets. Handle these separately if they obscure the content you need.
When Puppeteer is a better fit
Puppeteer is a reasonable choice when it is already part of your project or its browser automation setup matches your team’s needs. Its documentation covers page and element screenshots as well as HTTP authentication. For application-level login, you still need to establish a valid session and supply suitable cookies or authenticated state; choosing Puppeteer does not remove that requirement.

For a new implementation, compare the tools against the workflow you actually need: your project’s language and runtime, the authentication method, required screenshot modes, and how you want browser contexts and saved state managed. The available documentation does not establish a controlled feature comparison or universal speed ranking.

Visual output can change with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. If screenshots are used as visual baselines, keep the capture environment consistent: use the same browser version and launch settings, viewport dimensions, and relevant fonts and dependencies. Otherwise, a rendering difference may reflect the environment rather than a change to the page.

Choose the capture shape deliberately. A viewport screenshot is useful for a fixed-screen view; a full-page capture includes content beyond the initial viewport; and an element capture isolates a component. Pages that load content lazily may need to be scrolled or otherwise prompted to render before capture, and a navigation-ready event alone does not guarantee that every asynchronous component has finished.
Protect saved browser state
Authentication state is a credential, not a harmless test artifact. Playwright warns that saved state may contain sensitive cookies and headers capable of impersonating an account, and strongly discourages checking it into private or public repositories.
- Keep state files out of version control and restrict access to the account and machine that need them.
- Use a dedicated, least-privilege test account where possible, and avoid saving state for an account with broader access than the capture requires.
- Remove or rotate state when it is no longer needed, and regenerate it after the site expires or revokes the session.
- Do not expose state files through logs, build artifacts, public storage, or source-control history.
