Best overall: If you want a YouTube Live broadcast without keeping a computer running at home, StreamNeo is the simplest cloud-hosted option: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. If the files must stay on your NAS, use OBS Studio on a computer that can access the NAS, then send the broadcast to a YouTube live event. The right choice depends on whether you want to broadcast NAS files or simply play them locally.

Choose based on whether you need a broadcast or local playback

Looping files in a media player is not the same as broadcasting them. For a YouTube Live stream, an encoder must send video to a configured YouTube live event. A local NAS playlist can be a source for an encoder, but the NAS itself is not automatically a YouTube broadcaster.

  • To broadcast files stored on a NAS to YouTube Live: use a computer that can read the NAS as the encoder, or upload videos to a cloud streaming service.
  • To watch a NAS library on your own devices: a media server such as Jellyfin may be more appropriate; it is not documented as a direct YouTube Live replacement.
  • To copy YouTube playlist videos into a local library: Youtarr documents playlist mirroring and media-server playlist synchronization, not continuous YouTube Live broadcasting.

Best options for a NAS-based YouTube playlist

Option What it does Best fit Important limitation
StreamNeo Cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube continuously. Readers who want the stream to run without a home encoder; first day free, any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. Videos are uploaded to StreamNeo rather than streamed directly from the NAS; YouTube only.
OBS Studio with NAS media Uses a local computer as an encoder. OBS can loop one file or play a VLC playlist. Readers who want files to remain on their NAS and can leave a compatible computer running. Requires access to the NAS, an always-on encoder host, internet access, and YouTube Live setup. NAS-specific compatibility has not been established.
Gyre Its vendor describes uploading files to Gyre Storage, making a playlist, and scheduling a looping stream. Readers seeking a cloud-hosted playlist workflow. Features and offers can change; available evidence does not establish parity, comparative reliability, image quality, or total cost.
Jellyfin Self-hosted media library and live-TV functionality, including supported tuner inputs. Organizing and playing a local library. Documentation does not establish a direct YouTube Live broadcast workflow for NAS playlists.
Youtarr with a media server Downloads selected playlist items and synchronizes playlists to Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby, with an M3U fallback. Mirroring a YouTube playlist into a local media library. Not documented as an encoder that continuously publishes a YouTube Live stream.

Run NAS videos through OBS and YouTube Live

This is the practical do-it-yourself route when the files should stay on your NAS. OBS is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its system requirements note that CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so there is no single hardware specification that fits every stream.

1. Make the NAS files accessible to the encoder

Mount or connect the NAS share on the computer that will run OBS, and confirm that the account running OBS can open the video files. Keep the host connected to both the NAS and the internet, prevent sleep, and ensure the share remains available. These are operational requirements of this local-encoder arrangement; no particular NAS model or share protocol is established here.

  • Easily monitor the health of drives using the integrated IronWolf Health Management system and enjoy long-term reliability with 1M hours MTBF
  • Three-year limited warranty protection plan included and three year Rescue Data Recovery Services included

2. Add a single looping file or an ordered playlist

  1. For one file: in OBS, add a Media Source, browse to the video on the mounted NAS share, and enable Loop.
  2. For a playlist: add a VLC Video source, add the media paths in the intended order, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as controlling whether the source restarts after it runs out of media files; it is enabled by default.

The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS cautions that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the VLC source does not appear, check the VLC installation and that the application architectures match. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

3. Create and enable a YouTube live event

Set up a live event for the channel and configure OBS to send its output to that event using YouTube’s encoder workflow. YouTube says the channel must be verified and live streaming enabled; first-time enablement can take at least 24 hours after the request. Follow YouTube’s current event and encoder setup steps at YouTube Help. The source documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, or keyframe setting for every channel and video, so use the settings YouTube shows for the event and the capabilities of your source and encoder.

  • Store more, compute faster, and do it confidently with the proven reliability of BarraCuda internal hard drives
  • Build a power house gaming computer or desktop setup with a variety of capacities and form factors
  • The go to SATA hard drive solution for nearly every PC application from music to video to photo editing to PC gaming. Ax. Sustained transfer rate OD: 190MB/s
  • Confidently rely on internal hard drive technology backed by 20 years of innovation
  • Frustration Free Packaging - This is just an anti-static bag. No cables, no box.

4. Check playback and monitor the whole chain

Before relying on a long-running stream, verify that the playlist advances and restarts, the NAS share stays connected, OBS remains active, and the YouTube event receives the encoder feed. A local encoder depends on the host, NAS access, and internet connection remaining available; no reliability guarantee for a NAS broadcast follows from OBS’s documented loop controls.

When Gyre, Jellyfin, or Youtarr is the closer fit

Gyre for a cloud playlist workflow

Gyre’s vendor describes uploading media to Gyre Storage, assembling a looping playlist, scheduling a live stream, and letting the playlist restart. That is a relevant alternative if you do not want your home computer to be the encoder. It is a distinct cloud-storage workflow, not proof that Gyre reads files directly from a NAS. Check the current service details at Gyre; the available documentation does not support a like-for-like claim about costs, uptime, or stream quality.

Jellyfin for a private media library

Jellyfin describes a self-hosted personal media server and separate live-TV features for supported inputs, including M3U. Those functions can help organize and play media, but the documentation does not show a turnkey workflow that broadcasts a NAS playlist to YouTube Live. See Jellyfin’s introduction and live-TV documentation.

Youtarr for mirroring playlist items

Youtarr’s project documentation covers downloading selected YouTube playlist videos and synchronizing playlists to Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby, with an M3U fallback. That addresses local-library organization rather than continuous live encoding. Before downloading content, check the rights, platform terms, and content owner’s permission; the cited project documentation does not settle those questions. See Youtarr’s media-server playlist guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you are willing to upload the NAS videos, StreamNeo avoids keeping a computer and home connection running as the encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it is for YouTube only and does not broadcast a camera feed. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I loop videos from my NAS on YouTube Live?

Yes. Use an encoder such as OBS on a computer that can access the NAS, configure a looping media source or playlist, and send it to a YouTube live event.

Can Jellyfin replace Gyre for a 24/7 stream?

The cited Jellyfin documentation describes media-library and live-TV functions, not a direct NAS-playlist-to-YouTube-Live broadcast workflow.
