For cinematic GTA V footage on PC, start with high textures, shaders, anisotropic filtering, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and post-processing, then tune the expensive controls for the specific shot. A smooth, repeatable camera move with stable frame pacing looks more professional than a maximum-settings screenshot that stutters, streams late or shimmers in motion.
This guide covers both GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy. Enhanced is the default choice for the highest-fidelity current PC footage because it adds ray-traced lighting and reflections, higher output options, and DLSS or FSR support. Legacy remains useful for older hardware and projects that depend on its compatibility.

GTAV Enhanced
Use Enhanced when your system can sustain the desired output without erratic frame times. It adds ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections, along with support for AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS, higher resolutions and higher frame rates. Later updates also added higher-resolution ray-traced reflections and a second ray bounce for ray-traced global illumination, while subsequent updates documented changes to DLSS frame generation.

- This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
These features can make wet streets, glossy paint, glass, interiors and night lighting look substantially more realistic. They also consume capture headroom, so enable them by shot rather than treating every ray-tracing switch as mandatory.
GTAV Legacy
Choose Legacy when your graphics card or storage system cannot hold a stable Enhanced capture, or when a mod, tool or established production workflow requires the older edition. Existing PC owners can upgrade to Enhanced while retaining access to Legacy. Legacy lacks Enhanced’s current ray-traced and reconstruction features, but a well-tuned, stable Legacy shot is preferable to an unstable Enhanced one.
Hardware and output planning
Rockstar’s 2025 recommended Enhanced baseline is 16GB of dual-channel RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 with 8GB of VRAM or an AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT with 8GB of VRAM, and a 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive. This is a requirement baseline for running the game, not a promise of a particular recording resolution, ray-tracing level or frame rate.

Set your final delivery resolution and recording frame rate before you tune graphics. A 4K capture, for example, leaves less room for ray tracing and high-distance camera travel than a 1080p or 1440p capture. The highest native output your capture system can sustain is normally the cleanest starting point; if native rendering cannot maintain consistent frame times, a high-quality reconstruction mode can produce a better finished sequence than a nominally sharper but uneven native capture.
- Leave enough VRAM for the game, recording application and any overlays. If texture streaming becomes erratic, reduce texture-related pressure only after checking the other expensive controls.
- Use a fast, supported drive for the game and capture destination. Streaming-heavy fly-throughs expose slow storage and marginal frame-time headroom sooner than static shots.
- Lock the recording frame rate and camera path while testing. Changing both at once makes it difficult to identify which setting caused a hitch or shimmer.
Recommended cinematic baseline
Apply this as a starting preset, then validate it in the actual location, weather and camera move you will record. The values are priorities, not a guarantee that every system should use the highest option.

| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters for footage | When to compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Highest native output your capture system can sustain | Preserves fine geometry and avoids reconstruction artifacts | Use a quality DLSS or FSR mode when native rendering produces unstable frame times |
| Textures | Very High or Ultra, subject to VRAM | Keeps buildings, vehicles, clothing and surfaces detailed | Lower only after expensive scene settings are under control or if streaming and VRAM pressure persist |
| Shaders | Very High or Ultra | Maintains material response and lighting consistency | Reduce only when the measured frame-time budget requires it |
| Anisotropic filtering | Highest available | Keeps roads, ground and other surfaces sharp at oblique angles | Usually a low-priority compromise compared with shadows, reflections or grass |
| Shadow quality | High or Very High | Defines contact, silhouettes and directional-light detail | Lower shadow distance or quality if a specific lighting shot causes spikes |
| Soft shadows | Cleanest option without flicker or excessive blur | Controls the character of shadow edges | Test the exact scene; some modes look unstable on fine geometry |
| Reflection quality | Very High | Important for vehicles, wet streets, windows and night scenes | Lower before textures when reflections are not the subject of the shot |
| Reflection MSAA | Off | Can improve reflection edges in a close hero shot | Enable only when the visible gain justifies its capture cost |
| Water quality | High or Very High | Preserves wave, shoreline and rain-puddle detail | Reduce for shots with little or no water |
| Grass quality | High or Very High | Improves rural establishing shots and foreground vegetation | Reduce first when dense grass causes frame-time spikes |
| Post FX | High or Very High | Controls bloom, motion response and the overall lighting finish | Inspect at final output size for unwanted blur or shimmer |
| Ambient occlusion | High where available | Adds contact depth around buildings, vehicles, characters and props | Reduce if its cost is visible in a CPU- or GPU-limited shot |
| Tessellation | High or Very High when headroom allows | Adds geometric smoothness to supported surfaces | Lower before sacrificing stable frame pacing or major shadow/reflection detail |
| Population density | Moderate to high for city plates | Creates believable traffic and pedestrian activity | Lower for controlled hero shots or CPU-limited captures |
| Population variety | High when variation is part of the shot | Avoids visibly repeated pedestrians and vehicles | Lower when repeatability or memory headroom matters |
| Distance scaling | High for wide views and skylines | Extends level-of-detail visibility | Reduce during fast camera travel if streaming or frame times become unstable |
Rockstar’s official graphics controls include FXAA, grass, level-of-detail distance, post-processing, reflections, screen-space ambient occlusion, shadows, textures, tessellation, TXAA and water quality. NVIDIA’s official guide describes Distance Scaling as the game’s level-of-detail control. Treat it as a deliberate composition setting: a high value helps a skyline reveal, while the same value can burden streaming during a rapid dolly or helicopter move.
Anti-aliasing and temporal stability
Cinematic cameras spend more time in motion than in screenshots, so temporal stability matters more than a single paused frame. Start with FXAA or the version-appropriate temporal anti-aliasing option available in your edition. Test MSAA only if edge quality remains visibly inadequate and the capture still has consistent frame times.
What to inspect while the camera moves
- Thin geometry such as power lines, railings and fences should not crawl or flash.
- Foliage should retain a coherent shape instead of breaking into noisy pixels.
- Vehicle highlights and distant building edges should not shimmer as the camera pans.
- Shadow boundaries should remain stable rather than popping between levels of detail.
- Reconstruction modes should be checked for ghost trails behind cars, characters and foliage.
Keep Reflection MSAA off by default. It is a specialised trade: a close shot of a glossy car or wet pavement may benefit, but many scenes gain little while paying a measurable rendering cost. Raise it only for a shot where you can identify a real improvement in the final output.
Ray tracing and DLSS or FSR in Enhanced
Evaluate each ray-traced feature against the shot rather than enabling a blanket “everything on” preset.
Ray-traced reflections
These are most valuable when the frame contains wet asphalt, glossy vehicle paint, shop windows, mirrors or other reflective surfaces. In a dry rural wide shot, the same performance cost may produce almost no visible benefit. Compare a short, identical camera move with reflections enabled and disabled, looking at moving highlights and reflections rather than a static menu screenshot.

Ray-traced shadows and ambient occlusion
Ray-traced shadows can improve contact and directional-light definition, especially around vehicles, characters and architecture. Ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination are more apparent in interiors, under overhangs and at night. They can also reduce the margin that keeps a long take smooth, so retain them only when the lighting change survives final-resolution playback.
Ray-traced global illumination
Enhanced updates added a second ray bounce for RTGI. That can make indirect light more convincing, but the additional bounce is not automatically worthwhile in every setup. A carefully lit shot with stable conventional lighting can look better than a ray-traced shot that drops frames during a camera move.
DLSS and FSR
Upscaling can recover performance for high-resolution or ray-traced captures. For hero shots, begin with native resolution or the highest-quality reconstruction mode your system can sustain. For long sequences, a stable quality mode may be the better production choice. Inspect faces, foliage, wires, signs and reflective highlights for ghosting, shimmer, breakup or loss of fine detail before committing to a mode.
Frame generation changes perceived smoothness but does not remove the need for a solid underlying frame time. Test the actual recorded output, including camera pans and fast travel, after any DLSS frame-generation change documented in a game update.
Shot-specific presets
A single global preset is less useful than a small set of repeatable variants. Save or document the values you use for each scene type, and keep the camera path identical while comparing them.

| Shot type | Prioritise | Watch closely | First compromises if needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daylight city establishing shot | High distance scaling, high population density, shadows, reflections and ambient occlusion | Traffic and pedestrian frame-time spikes; distant building streaming | Population density, then distance scaling during fast movement |
| Night downtown or rain | Very high reflections, post-processing, ambient occlusion and suitable ray-traced reflections | Wet-surface shimmer, reflection noise and unstable lighting | Reflection MSAA, then ray-traced features that do not materially change the shot |
| Glossy vehicle hero shot | Textures, shaders, reflections, high-quality anti-aliasing and controlled lighting | Paint highlights, glass edges and reflection stability | Population and distance scaling; test Reflection MSAA rather than enabling it automatically |
| Interior or under-cover shot | Ambient occlusion, shadows, shaders and ray-traced global illumination when stable | Contact shadows, indirect light and reconstruction artifacts in dark areas | Ray-traced bounce count or other ray-traced effects before texture quality |
| Rural landscape or grass foreground | Grass, water where present, shadows and distance scaling | Vegetation shimmer and grass-related frame-time spikes | Grass quality first, then extended and ordinary distance scaling |
| Fast fly-through or chase camera | Consistent frame pacing, sensible distance scaling and controlled population | Streaming hitches, level-of-detail transitions and motion artifacts | Extended distance scaling, ordinary distance scaling, then population density |
What to lower first when recording stutters
Change one setting at a time and repeat the same camera move after each change. Use this order as a practical starting sequence, then confirm the result in your actual scene:
- Disable Reflection MSAA. It is an expensive specialist option and is rarely the first requirement for a cinematic shot.
- Reduce grass quality in rural or vegetation-heavy locations. Grass can be particularly expensive when the camera sees a large field of it.
- Reduce extended distance scaling, then ordinary distance scaling if the camera is moving quickly or the scene is streaming detail late.
- Reduce population density when the shot is crowded or the processor is the limiting factor. Population density also increases the work associated with reflections, shadows and post-processing.
- Reduce MSAA before reducing texture quality if anti-aliasing is the main cost.
- Reduce shadow distance or shadow quality only after checking whether the particular light source and composition actually need the higher setting.
- Disable or reduce ray tracing when it creates uneven frame times. Keep the individual ray-traced effect that visibly improves the shot and remove the one that does not.
Do not assume a setting has the same cost in every location. Grass, population, reflections and shadows interact with the number of visible objects, weather, lighting and camera speed. A preset that is smooth on an empty road may stutter in a rainy downtown intersection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capture workflow for repeatable trailer-quality footage
- Select the edition. Use Enhanced for current high-fidelity features when your hardware has sufficient headroom; use Legacy for older systems or compatibility-dependent workflows.
- Set the final output first. Choose the recording resolution and frame rate you will deliver. Do not tune at one resolution and silently switch to another for the final take.
- Build the locked baseline. Set high textures, shaders, anisotropic filtering, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and post-processing. Start Reflection MSAA off, and choose high grass, water and tessellation only where the scene needs them.
- Create shot variants. Keep separate documented values for daylight, night, rain, dense city scenes and rural grass. Note the edition, resolution, frame rate, reconstruction mode and ray-tracing switches.
- Record a repeatable camera move. Use the same route, speed, weather, time of day and population conditions after every significant change.
- Review motion at the delivery size. Look for frame pacing, foliage breakup, thin-geometry shimmer, reflection stability, shadow transitions and streaming hitches. A paused frame is not sufficient evidence.
- Recheck after updates. Rockstar’s update history includes fixes affecting ray-tracing performance, graphics-setting persistence, frame limits and Editor-related visual issues. After a major update, verify the saved settings and rerun the camera move before a final export.
- Export only after the shot repeats cleanly. Keep the tested preset with the project so the sequence can be recreated if you need a pickup shot.
Graphics options are changed from the game’s Pause Menu under the Settings tab. If a setting appears to revert, check it again after restarting the game and after installing an update; persistence behavior has changed across updates.
Troubleshooting common cinematic problems
The image looks sharp in a screenshot but shimmers in motion
Test the anti-aliasing mode at the final output resolution. Inspect wires, fences, foliage and distant rooflines first. If reconstruction is enabled, try a higher-quality mode or native rendering for the hero shot. Reduce excessive distance scaling if the shimmer is tied to level-of-detail transitions rather than edge sampling.
Rainy streets look noisy or unstable
Compare reflection quality and ray-traced reflections with Reflection MSAA disabled. Check moving highlights on pavement and cars, not just a still puddle. Keep the reflection method that produces stable temporal detail at the chosen resolution.
Best Value
The camera hitches while crossing the map
Lower extended distance scaling, then ordinary distance scaling, and repeat the exact route. If the hitch occurs mainly in crowded areas, reduce population density. Verify that the game and capture destination are on a suitable DirectStorage-compatible drive and that recording software has enough system and VRAM headroom.
Grass causes sudden frame-time spikes
Reduce grass quality before cutting textures or shaders. Rural scenes expose this cost because a large portion of the frame can contain dense vegetation. Recheck the same camera path after the change; a setting that is harmless in the city can dominate a countryside shot.
Ray tracing makes the take uneven
Disable one ray-traced effect at a time and replay the move. Keep reflections for wet or glossy scenes, shadows for shots where contact definition is prominent, and global illumination for interiors or indirect-light compositions only when the visual improvement remains obvious in the finished frame.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Population looks repetitive or changes between takes
Raise population variety when variation is part of the composition, but lower it when repeatability and memory headroom are more important. Keep population density and variety documented with the camera setup so pickup shots use the same conditions.
How to decide between native resolution and reconstruction
Native rendering gives the most direct pixel detail, but it is not automatically the best production choice. If native output forces uneven frame times, temporal artifacts from a well-tuned DLSS or FSR quality mode may be less distracting than dropped or irregular frames. Conversely, a close hero shot with wires, foliage and reflective paint may reveal reconstruction errors that are invisible in a distant wide shot.
Quick Recap
- Choose native or the highest-quality reconstruction for close-ups, fine geometry and shots intended for heavy cropping.
- Choose a stable quality reconstruction mode for long tracking shots when it preserves motion consistency and avoids stutters.
- Judge the result after encoding at the intended delivery resolution; artifacts can become more or less visible after scaling and compression.
Enhanced versus Legacy: practical decision table
| Decision factor | Enhanced | Legacy |
|---|---|---|
| Highest current visual ceiling | Ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections; higher resolutions and frame rates | Lower feature ceiling without Enhanced ray-tracing and reconstruction additions |
| Performance headroom | More demanding, especially with multiple ray-traced effects and high-resolution output | Often easier to stabilise on older hardware |
| Upscaling support | AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS support | Use the options available to the specific Legacy build and workflow |
| Compatibility | Preferred for current features, but verify mods and capture tools | Useful when an established project depends on older compatibility |
| Best use | Current trailer-style work where the system can sustain stable frame times | Older PCs, compatibility-sensitive productions and stable non-ray-traced footage |
Final checklist before recording
- Edition, resolution and recording frame rate are fixed.
- The chosen preset fits within available VRAM and system memory.
- Textures, shaders, anisotropic filtering, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and post-processing are as high as the shot benefits from.
- Reflection MSAA, grass, distance scaling, population, MSAA and ray tracing have been tested as deliberate trade-offs.
- The same camera move has been replayed after every major change.
- Motion has been checked for shimmer, ghosting, foliage breakup, shadow popping, reflection noise and streaming hitches.
- Settings have been rechecked after the latest game update.
