The best green screen for your live stream is the one that fills the area your camera sees, fits your room and is practical to set up. Choose coverage for your shot first; then compare how each screen stores, mounts and handles wrinkles. No single type is right for every desk or space.
How to choose a green screen for your shot
Open your camera preview and frame the shot you actually plan to use. A face-camera view may need only a compact panel, while a full-body shot or several people in frame needs more width and height. The screen must cover every part of the background you want to replace; anything beyond its edges will remain visible.
- Seated head-and-shoulders shot: A pop-up panel, compact collapsible screen or chair-mounted model may be sufficient. Check the preview for gaps around your shoulders and when you lean or turn.
- Wider seated shot: A larger panel or fabric backdrop gives more room to move. Allow for the full width of your chair and any movement in the frame.
- Full-body or multi-person shot: Look for a wide, tall screen or a large kit. Confirm the dimensions against the camera framing and the floor space needed for its support.
Dimensions matter more than labels such as “streaming” or “studio.” Product sizes and bundles vary, so check the exact variant and whether its stand or mounting hardware is included before buying.
Green screen types: strengths and trade-offs

Set up the screen and lighting
- Position the screen: Put it behind the subject and make sure it fills the area of the camera frame you intend to replace. Recheck the preview after changing camera position or zoom.
- Make the surface usable: Smooth or prepare fabric if it has creases, and secure it with suitable support or clamps. Avoid letting the screen sag or shift while you record.
- Light it evenly: Uneven illumination can make parts of the selected color harder to remove consistently. Adjust the room lighting and screen position while watching the camera feed. A kit may include lights and reflectors, but whether you need them depends on your room and equipment.
- Check the subject edges: Look at hair, shoulders and any movement against the screen. These areas make it easier to spot gaps or keying artifacts before going live.
Apply the chroma key in OBS
OBS’s Chroma Key filter removes instances of a selected color from a source. The filter is available on Windows, macOS and Linux. Add it to the camera source, select green or customize the key color, then adjust its controls while watching the actual camera feed. OBS’s documentation describes the filter’s purpose as: “Removes any instances of a given color from the Source.”
- Select the camera source: In OBS, open the source’s filters and add the Chroma Key effect filter. Confirm that you are adjusting the camera source rather than another scene element.
- Choose the key color: Start with green for a green backdrop, or customize the color if needed. A mismatch between the backdrop and selected color can leave visible patches.
- Set Similarity: This controls how aggressively OBS removes colors close to the key. Increase it carefully: too high a value can remove pixels you meant to keep, including parts of the subject.
- Set Smoothness: This softens the edges of the removed area. Adjust it while checking for jagged edges or a soft halo around the subject.
- Set Spill Reduction: This reduces traces of the key color around subject edges. Inspect hair and shoulders to see whether it helps without making edges look unnatural.
- Check movement and the full frame: Test the pose and movements you expect during the stream, and look for uncovered backdrop edges as well as artifacts around the subject.
OBS’s documentation, dated January 12, 2022, lists defaults of 400 for Similarity, 80 for Smoothness and 100 for Spill Reduction. These are software defaults, not universal recommendations; the right adjustments depend on your screen, lighting and camera image. See the OBS Chroma Key Filter documentation.

Can you use background removal without a physical screen?
Yes, software can provide a virtual background alternative. NVIDIA Broadcast offers AI background removal, replacement and blur. Its official page lists Windows 10 64-bit and a qualifying NVIDIA RTX GPU; the requirements shown include a GeForce RTX 2060 or higher, at least 8 GB RAM, specified drivers and internet connectivity during installation. The page showed version 2.2.0 in one area and linked version 2.2.1 under requirements, so verify the current requirements and version on NVIDIA’s NVIDIA Broadcast page before relying on it. This option depends on compatible hardware and software; it does not make every computer eligible.
