The best settings depend on which PC version you are using. In the current native PC port, enable native widescreen and adjust resolution and optional image-quality controls in the F10 overlay. In Project64, start with GLideN64 in HLE mode for a balance of performance and visuals; choose Parallel-RDP in LLE mode when accuracy matters more and your PC can handle it. Neither path has a verified universal numeric preset.
First identify which version of GoldenEye 007 you are running
“GoldenEye 007 on PC” can mean two different things, and their graphics settings are not interchangeable:
- Native PC port: A Windows and Linux port compiled from reconstructed source code for the original 1997 Nintendo 64 game. The project describes v0.4.0, released September 28, 2026, as a playable pre-1.0 release. It requires you to supply a supported NTSC-U ROM. See the GoldenEye 007 PC Port repository.
- N64 emulator: An emulator such as Project64 runs the N64 game using emulator graphics plugins. The plugin recommendations below are specific to Project64, not the native port.
If you are unsure, check the application you launched and its version or graphics-plugin settings before changing anything. The native port uses its own F10 overlay; Project64 settings are in the emulator and its plugin configuration.
Best display settings for the native PC port
Use native widescreen for an undistorted picture
Turn on the port’s native widescreen option if you want the game world to fill a widescreen display without stretching the original 4:3 image. The HUD is anchored to the screen edges. Front-end menus remain pillarboxed at 4:3, so their narrower presentation is expected. If you prefer the older stretched frame, use the Native widescreen toggle to restore it. These behaviors are documented in the project repository.

Adjust the picture through the F10 overlay
Press F10 to open the port’s options overlay. Its video and graphics controls include resolution, frame cap, MSAA, filtering, and FOV. The project documents these controls but does not specify a best numeric value for each one across different PCs and displays.
- Enable native widescreen first if you want the game world’s proportions preserved.
- Set resolution to a level appropriate for your display, then try a higher option if the game remains smooth.
- Increase optional MSAA or filtering gradually, checking for slowdowns or other unwanted performance changes.
- Choose a frame cap that feels smooth on your system rather than assuming one cap suits every display.
This is general setup advice, not a reported hardware test or project-recommended preset. One cosmetic quirk is that, with native widescreen enabled, the F10 overlay itself stretches with the window rather than being pillarboxed like the front-end menus. The project says this does not affect the correctly rendered widescreen game world or HUD; see the port README.

Best Project64 graphics plugin
Project64’s support documentation gives two general plugin setups. They are emulator-wide recommendations, not a guarantee that one will be best for GoldenEye on your particular PC.

Choose resolution by balancing clarity and smooth performance
Higher rendering resolution can make an image clearer, but it uses more GPU resources. The best level depends on your hardware, so start at the emulator’s normal or native-like rendering option and raise internal resolution one step at a time. Keep the highest setting that remains smooth; step back if you notice slowdown or stutter.
Dolphin’s official configuration guide warns that even 2x internal resolution can cause noticeable slowdown on onboard graphics and mobile devices. That is general emulator guidance, not a GoldenEye-specific benchmark or a recommendation to use Dolphin for this N64 setup. Quick settings decision
- Using the native port and want widescreen: Enable native widescreen, then tune resolution and optional image-quality settings in F10 while monitoring smoothness.
- Using Project64 and want a balanced starting point: Try GLideN64/HLE.
- Using Project64 and prioritizing accuracy: Try Parallel-RDP/LLE if performance is acceptable.
- Seeing slowdown after raising resolution: Lower internal resolution one step and reassess before changing other settings.
- Prefer the original 4:3 composition: In the native port, turn off native widescreen to restore the stretched frame.
