Use the highest graphics detail that keeps your game smooth over a sustained session—not simply the highest setting available. If the phone stutters or heats up, lower the frame-rate cap first, then reduce rendering resolution or demanding visual effects. For longer battery-focused sessions, choose a lower frame-rate target and, where your phone allows it, a display refresh rate close to that target.
Start with a stable frame rate, not maximum graphics
A higher frame-rate target leaves less time to render each frame. Apple’s examples show the trade-off: 30 fps allows about 33 milliseconds per frame, 40 fps allows 25 ms, and 60 fps allows about 16 ms. If the phone cannot meet that deadline consistently in busy scenes, the higher target can feel less smooth than a lower, steady one. Apple Developer Documentation explains frame-time targets and graphics tuning.
Begin with the game’s balanced, medium, or default preset. Play a demanding, repeatable section for long enough to see whether performance stays consistent, then raise visual detail one setting at a time. Judge clarity at your phone’s screen size alongside frame pacing; a setting that adds detail but causes persistent stutters may be a poor trade.
Which settings should you change?
If the game stutters or the phone gets hot
- Lower the frame-rate cap to a target the device can sustain. Recheck performance during the same demanding section.
- Reduce rendering resolution if the game offers that option. Lower resolution reduces the work required to draw each frame, though the image may look softer.
- Reduce demanding visual detail, such as effects, model detail, textures, or shaders, if the game exposes those controls. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment helps.
Reducing workload can help limit heat and power use. Android notes that CPU and GPU heat can trigger thermal throttling, which can affect performance and battery drain; Apple recommends that games adapt by lowering rendering resolution, limiting frame rate, or using less-detailed assets. Android’s guidance on thermal behavior and performance and Apple’s graphics guidance describe these approaches.

If battery life matters more than motion smoothness
Try a lower frame-rate cap, then bring the display refresh rate near that target if your phone provides a choice. Android explains that higher display refresh rates use more power; when refresh rate exceeds the game’s frame-rate target, the extra refresh may consume power without increasing the game’s frame rate. The game, display, and available controls determine what can actually be matched. Android’s refresh-rate guidance covers the distinction.
These are starting points, not a promise of a particular runtime increase. Battery use also depends on the game, phone hardware, display, temperature, and system behavior. To compare two presets fairly, use the same game section and similar starting conditions, and consider sustained frame pacing, screen-size clarity, heat over time, and battery use.

How Android game and refresh settings affect the choice
Android’s Game Mode can let a device offer a performance-versus-battery preference, but available choices vary by phone and game. Android FPS throttling, available on Android 13 or later, is an operating-system intervention that can limit frame rate. Android says this throttling can result in up to a 50% GPU power reduction and a 20% system power reduction. Those figures describe potential power reductions from the intervention; they do not mean a player’s battery life will increase by those percentages. Android’s FPS throttling documentation explains the feature and figures.
Refresh-rate behavior is also version- and device-dependent. Android’s documentation says Android 15 sets a 60 Hz default for games, and the system may override higher refresh-rate requests based on battery or temperature. Check the actual behavior on your phone rather than assuming a setting guarantees a particular frame rate or refresh rate. Android’s refresh-rate documentation describes these system behaviors.

What to expect on iPhone and iPad
There is no universal graphics-settings menu shared by every Apple-platform game. Use the frame-rate and graphics choices the game itself provides. Apple’s developer guidance recommends adapting graphics settings in response to conditions such as Low Power Mode, but that does not mean every game exposes the same controls to players. If a game offers fewer options, its available preset or frame-rate selector is the practical place to start. Apple’s graphics performance guidance is written for developers; Apple’s Low Power Mode support page describes the system feature.

A quick decision guide
- Prioritize visual detail: Keep the frame-rate target at a level that remains smooth, then raise detail only while performance stays consistent.
- Prioritize smoothness: Choose the highest frame-rate target that stays stable in demanding scenes, even if that means lowering visual detail.
- Prioritize battery or reduce heat: Lower the frame-rate target first; if needed, reduce rendering resolution and visual effects. Where supported, avoid setting display refresh substantially above the game’s target.
